Amerikkalaisen Cecilia Beauxin (1863-1942) maalauksessa "Sita ja Sarita" on hieostunut tunnelma. Nuori nainen on hiukan varautunut. Katse kohdistuu sivullle, asento on melko jäykkä ja vyönauha on kiedotti tiukasti oikean käden sormien väliin. Vasen käsi koskettaa olkapäällä seisovaa pientä mustaa kissaa. Mutta kissa on rohkea, se katsoo suoraan taiteilijaan keltaisilla silmillään ja häntä heittää seinälle tumman varjon. Kissaa on ensin vaikea erottaa tummasta taustasta, mutta sitten näkyvät silmät.

There is a refined atmosphere in the painting "Sita and Sarita" by American Cecilia Beaux (1863-1942). The young lady is a bit reserved. She is looking sideways, the posture is rather stiff and the waist ribbon has been wrapped tight between the right hand fingers. The left hand is touching a black kitten standing on the shoulder. But the cat is brave, she is looking straight at the artist with her yellow eyes, and the tail is casting a dark shadow on the wall. At first it's difficult to separate the cat from the dark background, but then there are the eyes.

Burmankissa Dottilla on hurjan keltaiset silmät. Väritin silmät tussilla ja pastellikynillä. Punahattuisesta Dottista teetin joulukortteja, mutta Dottilla ei ollut korttia tehdessä vielä keltaisia silmiä. Pitänee tehdä uusi satsi kortteja. Alkuperäisen linopiirroksen koko on 15 x 15 cm. Toisessa versiossa Dottista päässä on vihreä myssy.

Burmese cat Dotti has wild yellow eyes. I coloured the eyes with Indian ink and pastel pens. I made Christmas cards of Dotti with the red cap, but Dotti had not yet yellow eyes when I ordered the cards. Perhaps I might make a new batch of cards. The size of the original linocut is 15 x 15 cm. The second version of Dotti has a green cap.

Miten yhdistää kaksi linopiirrosta: Dotti-kissa ja kudottu myssy? Tein myssystä sapluunan. Levitin kissa-linolle värin ja laitoin myssy-sapluunan kissa-kaiverruksen päälle. Kun nyt vedostin kuvan, olisi siinä valkoinen kohta sapluunan tilalla. Nyt voin vedostaa kuvaan erillisen kudotun myssyn. Tarkkana tässä on vain oltava, että myssy tulee oikein päin eikä peilikuvana.

How to combine two separate linocuts: Dotti the cat and a knitted cap? I made a stencil of the cap. Then I applied the colour and put the stencil on top of the cat carving. Now when I printed the picture, there was a white place in the place of the stencil. Now I can print the separate cap into the picture. I just had to be careful, that the hat will be right and not as a mirror image.

Joskus valokuva kissasta saa mielikuvituksen liikkeelle. Näin kävi kun Instagram-kaverini Louis Stuart (@miffysworld) Australiasta postasi kuvia burmankissastaan Dottista. Mitkä silmät ja ilme! Tästä voisi tehdä joulukortin laittamalla Dottille päähän punaisen kudotun myssyn. Kaiversinkin kaksi erillistä linoa: Dottin ja myssyn. Hatunhan voi vedostaa vaikka vihreänäkin.

Sometimes a photograph of a cat gets your imagination moving. This happened to me when I saw my Instagram fried Louis Stuart (@miffysworld) from Australia posted pictures of her Burmese cat Dotti. What fabulous eyes and expression! I could make a Christmas card of her putting a red knitted cap on Dotti's head. So I carved two separate linos: Dotti and the cap. Why not print the hat even green.

Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918) oli georgialainen naivisti, joka tuli kuuluisaksi vasta kuolemansa jälkeen. Pirosmani maalasi kauppoihin mainoskylttejä, ja tämäkin kuva voisi olla hedelmäpuodin mainos. Kauppias itse on kuvattu myyntipuuhissa asiakkaan kanssa. Hyvin pukeutunut nainen ottaa rahaa lompakostaan ja hänen lapsensa pitää kiinni takin helmasta. Hyllyillä ja laatkoissa ovat hyvin esillä muhkeat melonit ja hedelmät. Taustalla on koira, mutta etualalla vasemmalla oleva kissa on kyllä aavemaisen näköinen samoin kuin valkokasvoiset ilmeettömät ihmiset. Picassossa ja hänen taiteilijaystävissään Pirosmanin lapsenomainen ja aito maalaustapansa herätti ihailua, hiukan samaan tapaan kuin Henri Rousseau. Ostin tämän kortin kesällä Mikkel-museon Pirosmani-näyttelystä Tallinnassa.

Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918) was Georgian Naïve artist, and he became famous only after his death. Pirosmani painted advertisement signs for shops, and this picture could also be a sign for a fruit stall. The shopkeeper himself has been depicted selling fruits to a customer. A well dressed lady is taking money out of her purse, and her child is holding on the hen of her jacket. Plump melons and other fruits are well presented on the shelves and boxes. On the background there is a dog, but the cat on the left corner in the forefront is really spooky looking and so are also the humans with their expressionless chalky white faces. Pirosmani´s childlike and genuine style of painting aroused admiration in Picasso and his artist friends, a bit like the admiration of Henri Rousseau. I bought this card last summer at Mikkel Museum´s Pirosmani exhibition in Tallinn.

KALENTERI 2020 / CALENDAR 2020

Nyt on jo aika katsoa eteenpäin vuoteen 2020. Teimme taas mieheni Timon kanssa kalenterin, jossa on linopiirroksiani ja Timon valitsemia vanhoja suomalaisia sananlaskuja. Kuvissa vilahtaa Pispalaa, 10 kissaa ja kaksi koiraakin. Huomasin näistäkin linopiirroksista, että viime aikoina kuviin on tullut lisää värejä, pastellia tai käsin väritettyjä osia. Kalenteria voi ostaa myös Etsy-kaupastani.

Now is already the time to look forward to the year 2020. We did again a calendar with my husband Timo. There are in the calendar my linocuts and Timo selected old Finnish proverbs. In the pictures you can see glimpses of Pispala, 10 cats, and even two dogs. I noticed even from these linocuts, that lately there has been more colours in my pictures, pastel or hand coloured parts. This calendar is on sale also in my Etsy shop.

VILLA ARMAS - NAIVISTINÄYTTELY / VILLA ARMAS NAÏVE ART EXHIBITION

Galleria Villa Armaan naivistinäyttely Kohti unelmia on nyt auki. Mukana on yhdeksän naivistia, pääasiassa maalauksia. Itseltäni on näyttelyssä mukana linopiirroksia, kortteja, keittiöpyyhkeitä ja kalentereita. Avajaisiltana oli aikamoinen vilske ja rento tunnelma. Ihastelin Sonja Lehdon maalauksia, joissa erilaiset eläimet puuhastelevat sovussa keskenään, isä on leijona, äiti karhu ja lapsi hiiri. Värit ovat heleät, ja muistumia lastenkirjojen kuvitukseen tai kansanperinteen kirjonnan väreihin ja kuvioihin voi aistia. Stig Janssonin tyyli erottautuu muista, lentävässä matossa on siivet, ja herra valmistautuu iltaansa muotoilemalla viiksiään. Tästä näyttelystä tulee hyvälle mielelle!

A Naïve Art group exhibition at gallery Villa Armas is now open. Nine artists are participating, and there are mainly paintings. My works here are linocuts, cards, kitchen towels and calendars. There was quite a bustle at the opening night, but a relaxed atmosphere. I admired paintings by Sonja Lehto, in them different animals are hanging out with each other, the father is a lion, mother is a bear and child is a mouse. The colours are bright, and you can notice some similarities with children´s book illustrations or old folk art patterns or colours. Stig Jansson´s style is standing out, the flying carper has wings, and a gentleman is preparing for the night out shaping his moustache. This exhibition makes you happy!

Virolaisen Jüri Arrakin (s. 1936) maalauksen nimi on "Armastav loom" (Rakastava eläin). Ensimmäiseksi en kyllä menisi silittelemään tätä petoa. Silmät ovat vihamielisesti viirussa ja partakarvatkin sojottavat uhkaavasti. Tämä on varmaan gepardi, mutta korvissa on jotain kissamaista. Ruskeat sävyt ovat hienot. Ostin kortin kesällä Tallinnan KUMU-museosta.

The name of this painting by Estonian Jüri Arrak (b. 1936) is "Armastav loom" (Animal Who Loves). I wouldn't still go patting and stroking this beast. The eyes are hatefully crooked, and even the bear is sticking out threateningly. This must be a cheetah, but there is something cat-like in his ears. The brown hues are fine. I bought this card last summer at KUMU Museum in Tallinn.

Olen mukana kolmatta kertaa Villa Armas-gallerian syksyisessä naivistien yhteisnäyttelyssä. Vein pöydällisen linopiirroksia galleriaan, ja lisäksi kortteja, keittöpyyhkeitä ja kalentereita. Galleristi ja kuraattori Auli Tikkalalla on iso työ ripustaa työt seinille ennen näyttelyn avautumista sunnuntaina 15.9.2019. Suurin osa näyttelyyn tulevista töistä oli vielä kassseissa ja laatikoissa, mutta joistakin näki jo vilauksen: Stig Larsson, Sonja Lehto, Minna Lehväslaiho ja Esa Leppänen. I´m participating for the third time at the autumnal Naïve Art group exhibition at Gallery Villa Armas. I took a full table of my linocuts to the exhibition, and also cards, kitchen towels and calebdars. Auli Tikkala, gallerist and curator has a big job hanging up all the works before the opening of the exhibition on Sunday, 15th, September. Most of the other works were still in boxes and parcels, but I could see glimpses of some of the paintings: Stig Larsson, Sonja Lehto, Minna Lehväslaiho and Esa Leppänen. Welcome to the opening of the exhibition on Sunday, 15th September, 2019 at 6 PM in Pikonlinna, Kangasala!

BP PORTRAIT AWARD - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Tänäkin kesänä National Portrai Galleryssä Lontoossa oli BP Portrait Award-näyttely, jossa palkitaan parhaita muotokuvia. Edelleen valtaosa muotokuvista oli fotorealistisia kuvia, joissa enemmän tai vähemmän näkyi pohjalla olevan valokuvan piirteitä. Muutama muotokuva erottui joukosta niin, että maalaukseen oli tavoitettu mallin sisäisempiäkin tuntoja, ei vain jokainen hius, finni tai ihokarva.
BP (British Petroleum) sponsorina on saanut paljon vastustusta, saa nähdä miten käy ensi vuoden näyttelyn, joka olisi jo 31. kerta tätä kisaa.

Also this summer there was BP Portrait Award exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The best portraits are getting prizes. Still almost all portraits are Photorealistic pictures, and the photographic features which the paintings were based on were more or less visible. A few of the portraits stood out so that the painting had some of the inner feelings of the model were reached, not just every hair or pimple. BP (British Petroleum) as the sponsor has had a lot of criticism, we´ll see next year if there will be the 31st portrait award exhibition.

CINDY SHERMAN - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Kolmas päivä Lontoossa ja National Portrait Galleryn Cindy Shermanin (s. 1954) valokuvanäyttely ohjelmassa.  En oikein tiedä, miksi odotin näyttelyn olevan iloisempi tai leikittelevämpi. Tiesin, että Shermanin omakuvissaan pukee ja maskeeraa itsensä tunnistamattomaksi tai ainakin johonkin rooliin. Odotinko jotain hauskaa roolipeliä. Shermanin omakuvat olivat jotain vakavampaa ja osaksi synkempää. Alkukauden mustavalkoiset kuvat olivat kauniita, Sherman oli vain osa isompaa maisemaa tai kokonaisuutta, osassa hiukan ujon tai ulkopuolisen tuntuisena. Mutta myöhemmissä valtavan kokoisissa värillisissä omakuvissa maskit olivat niin paksut, ettei omia kasvonpiirteitä enää erottanut ja puvustus oli kuin jostain näytelmästä. Melkein pelottava oli sarja kuvia, joissa kasvoja ja koko vartaloakin saattoi peittää muovinen naamio. Shermanille tuntui olevan tyypillistä jonkinlaiset projektit, joiden pohjana olivat mm. muotikuvat, historialliset maalaukset tai aristokraatit. Nämä roolit eivät ole komedioista vaan tragedioista.

Third day in London and the goal is Cindy Sherman's (b. 1954) photography exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery. I don´t really know why I was expecting the exhibition to be more cheerful or playful. I knew that Sherman is changing herself unidentified or at least someone else in her self-portraits by dressing and wearing make-up. Did I expect some kind of fun role play. Sherman´s self-portraits are something far more serious and partly even grim. The black and white photos of her earlier period were beautiful, Sherman was just a part of a bigger landscape or interior, sometimes looking a bit shy or an outsider. But later in the really huge colour pictures the masks were so thick you couldn´t see her own face any more, and the costumes were like from a theatre play. A series of photos where plastic masks covered faces and the whole body were almost scary. It seemed to be typical to Sherman creating some kind of photo series based for example fashion models, historic paintings or aristocrats. These roles are not from comedies but from tragedies.
