MATKAAN PISPALASTA: PAPERI / TRIP FROM PISPALA: PAPER

Sarjaani Pispalan taloista ja järvestä on koossa nyt 10 A4-kokoista linopiirrosta. Iso homma on edessä: vedostaa kaikki 10 linoa yhteen isoon kuvaan: 60 x 100 cm. Aion ryhtyä työhän kesämökillä, jossa käytössä on mm. nurmikkojyrä vedostukseen. Ensimmäinen vaihe on paperin leikkaus oikeaan kokoon. Käytän isoihin linopiirroksiin rullalla toimitettavaa Fabriano Accademia -paperia, 120 g, valkoinen mattapintainen, rullan leveys on 150 cm ja pituus 1000 cm. Olen ostanut tätä paperia verkosta Art Discountin sivuilta. Paperi on sopivan sileä käsin vedostettuihin linopiirroksiin, sopivan ohut ja pysyy kauniisti rypistymättömänä. Mikä ihana tunne nähdä pino valkoista  paperia odottamassa kuviaan!

There are now ready all ten A4 sized linocuts of my series of Pispala houses and a lake. A big job is ahead: pulling all ten linos into one big picture: 60 x 100 cm. I´m planning to do this job at the summer cottage, where I can use for example a lawn roller for the printing. The first task is to cut the paper to right sized pieces. I use for my larger linocuts Fabriano Accedemia paper, which I get in a roll, 120 g,white matt finish, the width of the roll is 150 cm and the length 1000 cm. I have bought this paper in the Internet from Art Discount. The paper is suitably smooth for hand printing of linocuts, suitably thin and it stays beautifully un-crumpled. What a glorious feeling to see a stack of white paper waiting for their pictures!

Kissa tuijottaa ihmeissään akvaarioon. Ja siihen on syytäkin. Kahden kultakalan lisäksi sammakko kiipeää tikapuita pitkin ylös vedestä. Yksityiskohdat kuvassa ovat hienoja: kirjapino kissan alla, akvaarion metallijalat, pöydän koristeelliset jalat, maton ja seinäpaneelien kuviot sekä tapetin kaunis kukkakuvio taustalla. Kuva on Raphael Tuck and Sonsin kromolitografia vuodelta 1885. Kromolitografia oli painotekniikka, jossa kukin väri painettiin erillisellä metallilaatalla, ja laattoja on tässä kuvassa ollut aika monta. Kromografian pilkullinen kuviointi näkyy kun kuvaa katsoo suurennuslasilla.

The cat is staring at the fish bowl in wonderment. And there is a reason for that. In addition to two gold fish there is a frog climbing up the ladder out of the water. The details in the picture are fine: a stack of books under the cat, the metal pedestal of the fish bowl, the decorative feet of the table, the patterns of the mat and wall panels, and the beautiful flower pattern of the wallpaper. The picture is a chromolithograph by Raphael Tuck and Sons from the year 1885. Chromolithograph is a printing technique, where every colour is printed from a separate metal sheet, and there really are a few of them in this picture. The speckled markings of the chromolithograph are seen when you look at it with a magnifying glass. 

MARTTI INNANEN - TAPAHTUMA / HAPPENING

Kolme päivää hulvatonta menoa Arp Pispala-galleriassa 25.-27.4.2019! Ilkka Vainio vetää showta ja esillä on 30 Suomen naivismin kantaisän Martti Innasen (1931- 2014) ennen näkemätöntä maalausta Ilkka Vainion ja Sami Rantalan yksityiskokoelmista. Maalauksissa seikkailevat suomalaiset talonpojat, mutta myös liekinnielijä, kamelit ja linnut eväsreput selässään.

Three days some wild happening at Art Pispala gallery from April, 25th to April, 27th! Ilkka Vainio is pulling the show, and there are exhibited 30 earlier rarely seen paintings by the Finnish Naïve Art´s great old man Martti Innanen (1931-2014) from the private collections of Ilkka Vainio and Sami Rantala. There are of course Finnish peasants in the paintings but also a flame swallower, camels and birds with rucksacks on their backs. 

IITTALA ODOTTAA KESÄÄ / WAITING FOR SUMMER IN IITTALA

Työt ensi kesän Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyyn on viety, ja niitä oli vastaanottamassa Kira Suomalainen iloisen kaaoksen keskellä. Seinät olivat vielä houkuttelevasti tyhjät, mutta lattioilla oli kasseja, kääröjä, paketteja ja uusia maalauksia tai veistoksia. Mitä kaikkea noista pakkauksista vielä kuoriutuukaan ennen kesää! Näyttely aukeaa 18.5.2019 ja on auki 25.8. asti.

The works for the next summer´s Naïve Artists in Iittala 2019 exhibition are taken there, and Kira Suomalainen was receiving art works among the happy chaos. The walls were still attractively empty, but on the floors there were bags, parcels, packets and new paintings or sculptures. What ever are gonna hatch out of these packages before the summer! The exhibition will open 18th of May, 2019 and it will be open till 25th, August.

Happy Easter! A black cat is flying on a broom stick with a full moon behind her, and there is a poem on the backside of the card.The picture and poem are by Marleena Ansio (b. 1947).

On the Easter night
we will be making magic,
and there will be in the moonlight
flying broom sticks.
Willow flowers are wakening and
opening their eyes,
even the small chicks
can come out.
Little witches cast their spells
on their friends 
and they get many delicacies
in their baskets.

LINTUPARVI : osa 2. / FLOCK OF BIRDS: Part Two

Lintuparvi eli linopiirros ja pastellipiirros muuttolinnuista on nyt valmis. Kuva on aika iso: 50 x 30 cm. Alaosa ja linnut ovat linopiirroksia ja taivas pastellia. Mielessä on jo uusia versioita tästä aiheesta, sillä lintuparvihan voi olla vaikka minkä muotoinen.

The Flock of Birds linocut & pastel drawing of migratory birds is now ready. The picture is quite big: 50 x 30 cm. The bottom part and the birds are linocuts anf the sky is a pastel drawing. There are already in my mind new versions of this subjects, because the flock of birds can be any shape at all.

Hollantilaisen kuvittajan Fiep Westendorpin (1916-2004) suuripäiset Pim & Pom -kissat seikkailevat tässä mustavalkoisessa kortissa yksin ja erikseen: makoilevat pajukorissa, ruokakupilla, suukottelevat, tanssivat, syleilevät  ja kyräilevät. Toinen kissa on musta ja toinen hauskasti raitainen. Westendorp teki kuvituksia pääasiassa lastenkirjoihin, ja hänen tyylinsä oli pikkutarkka, iloinen ja positiivinen.

The big-headed cats Pim & Pom by Dutch Fiep Westendorp (1916-2004) are adventurous in this black and white card together and by themselves: lying in a wicker basket, by their food bowls, kissing, dancing, hugging and snooping. The other cat is black and the other striped funnily. Westendorp made illustrations mainly for children's boos, and her style was detailed, merry and optimistic. 

KOHTI IITTALAA / TOWARDS IITTALA

Pieni työhuoneeni on jälleen kaaoksen vallassa. Ensi kesän Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyyn tarjottavat työt alkavat olla valmiina lähtöön. Näyttelyyn on tulossa naivistista taidetta noin 40 taiteilijalta.  Aulashoppiin on myös tekeillä monenlaista hauskaa tuotosta linopiirroksista: pieniä kehystettyjä linoja, kehyspahveihin laitettuja linoja, kortteja, kissatatskoja ja keittiöpyyhkeitä. Kesän odotus kasvaa!

My small studio is once again in the state of chaos. The works which will be offered to the walls of next summer's Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition are soon ready. There will be at this exhibition Naïve art of about forty artists. There will also be quite a lot of different fun products from linocuts at the Lobby Shop: small framed linos, linocuts in cardboard frames, cards, instant cat tattoos and kitchen towels. The waiting of Summer is increases!

LINTUPARVI: osa 1 / FLOCK OF BIRDS: Part One

Nyt aion hyödyntää pieniä linopiirroksiani linnuista. Tarkoitus on tehdä aika iso (50 x 30 cm) linopiirros/pastelli -yhdistelmä, jossa alaosassa on kuva kissasta laiturilla. Taivas on kirkkaan sininen ja iso lintuparvi kiemurtelee taivaalla. Mielessä ovat isot kottaraisparvet (murmuration), joista näkee joskus videoita Internetissä. Minun linolintuni eivät tosin ole kottaraisia, ja lintuja pitää saada kuvaan lisää.

Now I plan to make use of my small linocuts of birds. My aim to make quite a large  (50 x 30 cm) linocut/pastel combination, where there is a cat on a pier on the bottom. The sky is bright blue and a big flock of birds is circling in the sky. In my mind there are some big flock of starlings (the murmuration of starlings) - you sometimes see videos of them in the Internet. Still, my linobirds are not starlings and there will be more of them in the picture.

Kissa on löytänyt aurinkoisen paikan ruskealla lattialla. Se levittelee varpaitaan mielihyvästä ja todennäköisesti myös kerää. Taustalla näkyy lattialankkujen lisäksi ovi, kaapin alaosa ja rivi maalauspohjia. Paikkana on siis taiteilijan oma ateljee. Tässä ruskeavoittoisessa kuvassa kissan vaaleassa turkissa näkyvät paksut siveltimenvedot. Kuvan kompositio on kaunis, vaikka taiteilija onkin jättänyt osan kissasta pois. Amerikkalaisen Harold Westonin (1894-1972) maalaus The Arena on signeerauksen mukaan vuodelta 1930.

The cat has found a sunny spot on the brown floor. She is spreading her toes for pleasure, and probably she is also purring. There are in the background a door, bottom of a cupboard and a stack of painting canvases and frames. The place must be the artist's own studio. The markings of a paint brush are clearly seen on the fur of the cat on this brownish painting. The composition of the painting is beautiful, even though the artist has left part of the cat away. American Harold Weston's (1894-1972) panting The Arena was painted in 1930 according to the signing.   

LISÄÄ PIENIÄ LINOLINTUJA / MORE SMALL LINO BIRDS

Neljä uutta pientä linopiirrosta linnuista on tässä. Ehkä näistä jo saa parven muuttolintuja. Vielä pientä siivousta tarvitaan näihin linoihin, kaivan siis esille suurennuslasini.

Kevät saapuu ja mielessäni on tehdä pastellitaivas, jossa lentää muuttolintuja. Siispä tarvitsen joukon hyvin pieniä linopiirroksia erilaisista linnuista. Tässä on neljä uutta "leimasinta".

The Spring is coming and in my mind is a picture of a pastel sky with migratory birds.So I need a group of very small linocuts of different birds. Here are four new "stamps".

MAIJA & KRISTOFFER ALBRECHT - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Maija (s. 1967) & Kristoffer (s. 1961) Albrechtin näyttely Grafiikkaa ja valokuvia galleria Saskiassa on kaunis. Työt eivät komeile koollaan, osaa pitää tutkia ihan läheltä jotta näkee linnun jalat, sittiäisen peitinsiivet tai kärpäsen jalat. Kristoffer Albrechtin valokuvat ovat hopeagelatiinivedoksia, yksivärisiä maisemia, asetelmia tai eläimiä. Tunnelma niissä on pysähtynyt, seesteinen ja rauhallinen. Maija Albrechtin grafiikka on suurimmaksi osaksi kuivaneulaa, tosi yksityiskohtaista, pikkutarkkaa ja joissakin kuvissa tai installaatioissa voi nähdä hiukan huumoriakin. Lintujen muotokuvat ovat upeita, silmät loistavat kirkkaina ja näillä linnuilla on ihan oma luonteensa kullakin.

Maija (b. 1967) & Kristoffer (b. 1961) Albrecht's exhbition Graphics and Photographs  at the Gallery Saskia is beautiful. These works do not parade with their size, some of them must be inspected quite near so that you can see the bird's feet, dung beetle's cover wings or fly's feet. Kristoffer Albrecht's photographs are silver gelatin prints, monochrome landscapes, still lifes or animals. The atmosphere in these pictures is stagnant, serene and peaceful. Maija Albrecht's graphics is mainly drypoint, really detailed, precise and there is even a bit of humour is some of the pictures or installations. The bird portraits are glorious, the eyes are shining bright, and each of these birds have their own personality.

Ensin luulin, että radio tässä Seppo Tammisen (1944-2012) guassimaalauksessa "Blaupunkt" on jostain lehdestä leikattu. Radion bakeliittiväri näytti aidolta kun näin alkuperäisen maalauksen Naivistit Iittalassa -talvinäyttelyssä 2019. Mutta radiokin on maalattu kun tarkemmin katsoo. Radion päällä maisemaa vartioi Tammisen mustavalkoinen kissa. Ikkunan takana on suomalainen talvimaisema, punainen tupa ja koivu, lyhtypylväs yksityiskohtana. Sama kirkas punainen toistuu mökissä ja kissan kuonossa. Ostin kortin Iittalasta näyttelyssä käydessäni.

First I thought that the radio is this gouache painting "Blaupunkt" by Seppo Tamminen (1944-2012) is a picture cut from a magazine. The bakelite colour of the radio seemed so real when I saw the painting in the Naïve Artists in Iittala winter exhibition 2019. But also the radio is painted when you look at it closer. Tamminen's black and white cat is observing the view on top of the radio. A typical Finnish winter scene is seen behind the window, a red cottage and birch, an electrical pylon as a detail. The same bright red colour is repeated on the cottage and the tip of the muzzle of the cat. I bought this card visiting the exhibition.
