PISPALAN HARJUN YLÄOSAT: osa 2 / PISPALA RIDGE UPPER PARTS : Part 2

 

Tämä kolmeosainen versio 10-osaisesta Pispalan harju -linopiirroksesta oikeastaan sai aikaan jo kauan itäneen idean vedostaa kaikki ison (60 x 100 cm) kymmenosaisen linon yläosan palaset yhdessä kuumailmapallon kanssa. Kolmeosainen versio meni syntymäpäivälahjana hyvälle toverilleni, entiselle työkaverille. Mikä sen mukavampaa! Tein hänelle myös pienen videon vedostustyön etenemisestä. Tämä kolmeosainen versio nimeltään "Pispala klo 14.15 - Vilkutetaan harjulle" on kooltaan 30 x 60 cm.

This three-part version of the ten part linocut of Pispala actually started my long planned project  to print all the upper parts of a bigger (60 x 100 cm) ten-part lino together with the hot air balloon. The three part version was a birthday present to my good friend, former work mate. What could be nicer! I also made her a short video about the printing process. This three-part version is called "Pispala 2.15 pm - Let´s wave to the ridge!" and sized 30 x 60 cm.

 Ranskalaisen graafikon Félix Vallottonin (1865-1925) puupiirros Laiskuus (La Paresse) on muotojen ja kuvioiden juhlaa. Puupiirroksen mustan ja valkoisen vastakohdat korostuvat hienosti. Sohvalla makaavan naisen ja kissan valkoiset alueet nousevat esiin, ja pyöreät muodot ikään kuin kiertyvät kissan hännästä naisen käsien kautta pakaroihin ja jalkoihin. Sängynpeitteiden ja tyynyjen kuviot täyttyvät yksityiskohdista, raidoista, ruuduista ja viivoista.

This woodcut by French graphic artist Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) is a celebration of forms and patterns. The black and white opposites of the woodcut are emphasized by finely. The white areas of a woman reclining on a sofa and the cat are standing out, and the round shapes are like circling from the tale of the cat along the arms of the woman to her buttocks and feet. The patterns of the bed spread and pillows are full of details, stripes, squares and lines.

Vihdoinkin pääsin käsiksi projektiin, jota olen jo suunnitellut aika kauan. Halusin vedostaa isosta 10-osaisesta linopiirroksesta "Matkaan Pispalasta" erilaisia kombinaatioita kuvan yläosasta eli viidestä A4-kokoisesta linopiirroksesta niin, että kaikissa näkyy kuumailmapallo. Ensimmäinen on tietenkin vasemmalla oleva kuumailmapallo yksinään, jonka koko on 30 x 20 cm. Tätä olen vedostanut jo aiemminkin, nyt jokunen uusi. Uusi on nyt  kaksiosainen versio kuumailmapallosta eli kaksi vasemmanpuoleisinta linoa, joita nyt on muutama kuivumassa seinälläni, koko on 30 x 40 cm. Seuraavaksi kolmeosainen versio.

At last I managed to start a project I have been planning already quite a while. I wanted to print different combinations of the upper part of my ten-part linocut "To the Voyage from Pispala" ie. pictures of the five A4 sized linocuts so, that the hot air balloon is in every picture. The first is of course the hot air balloon alone at the left, the size of the picture is 30 x 20 cm.  I have printed this already earlier, now a couple new ones.Now a new one is two-part version, two left pieces, which there are now a couple prints drying on my wall, size: 30 x 40 cm. Next is the three-part version.

INTERIN JOULUKAUPPA RUNEBERGIN MÖKILLÄ 2021 / INTERI´S CHRISTMAS SHOP AT RUNEBERG´S COTTAGE 2021

 Interin joulukauppa Runebergin mökissä Haiharassa on auennut ja on auki 19.12.2021 asti. Kun veimme sinne muutaman linopiirroksen, kortteja, keittiöpyyhkeitä ja kalentereita, alkoivat pöydät täyttyä käsitöistä. Entiseen tapaan esillä on paljon villasukkia, lasia, keramiikkaa ja puuta, löysin huovutettuja kissojakin. Kauppa on nyt auki enemmän iltaisin, keskiviikosta perjantaihin klo 19 asti. Tämä on joululahjan etsijän paratiisi!

Interi´s Christmas shop at Runeberg´s Cottage in Haihara is open again and will be open till December 19, 2021. When we took there a few linocuts, cards, tea towels and calendars, the tables started to fill up with handicrafts. Like earlier there will be a lot of wool socks, glass, ceramics and wood, I found even felted cats. The shop is open later at the evenings, from Monday to Friday till 7 pm. This is a paradise for anyone looking for Christmas presents!

REUNUS MONOPRINTEILLE / BORDER FOR MONOPRINTS

 Kokeilin pariin monoprinttiin uutta linopiirrosreunusta. Jatkossa pitää varoa tekemästä liian tummia monoiprint-taustoja, sillä ne tuntuvat liian "ahtailta" ja täysiltä. Hennohko, vaalea monoprint toimii pohjana paremmin. ja siihen voi tarvittaessa lisätä kuvioita linopiirrosleimasimilla ja leimasinmusteella. Monoprint-pohjan koko on 15 x 15 c, ja reunuksineen kuvan koko 21 x 21 cm. Nyt vaan sekoittamaan värejä monoprinteille, aion käyttää Gelli-levyä.

I tested my new linocut border for couple of monoprints. In the future I might be aware of making too dark monoprint backgrounds, because they feel to "cramped" and full. More delicate, light monoprint suits better for the base, and I can always add patterns with using linocut stamps and stamp ink. The size of a monoprint background is 15 x 15 cm, and with the border the size is 21 x 21 cm. And now just mixing colours for monoprints, I plan to use a Gelli plate.

 "Hyrrätä niin tahtoisin luona oman sankarin"  kertoo tämän kissakortin kuvateksti. Uskoisinko? Mustan keltasilmäisen kissan ilme kertoo itsepäisyydestä, itsenäisyydestä ja hiukan kurittomuudestakin. Haluaisiko tämä pirttihirmu kehrätä jonkun sylissä. Mutta hurjimmankin kissan sisällä asuu kehräävä sylikisu. Tekstin tekijäksi kortissa mainitaan Ulla Kamppinen, mutta kuvan tekijästä ei le tietoa.

"I would so want to purr by my own hero" says the text in this cat card. Woud I believe? The expression of a black and yellow-eyed cat tells about obstinacy, independence and a bit of misbehavior. Would this battle-axe like to purr in someone´s lap. But inside even the ferocious cat there lives a purring lap cat. Ulla Kamppinen is mentioned as the maker of the text, but there is no knowledge about the maker of the picture.

REUNUS / BORDER

Tein linopiirroksen reunukseksi 15 x 15 cm kokoisille monoprinteille. Käytin nyt ensimmäistä kertaa Polymer -nimistä ainetta kaiverrukseen. Sininen levy on A3-kokoinen ja tosi pehmeä. Kaivertamisen kanssa saa olla tarkkana, ettei lipsahda. Nyt on kiinnostavaa kokeilla, millainen tuntuma tähän materiaaliin on vedostaessa. Aine muistuttaa hiukan kumia, mutta tuntuu lohkeavan saksilla leikatessa helpommin kuin monta vuotta sitten ainakin kouluissa käytössä ollut vihreä kumilevy.

I made a linocut for the border of my 15 x 15 cm sized monoprints. I used now for the first time material called Polymer for the cutting. The blue blade is A3 -sized and really soft. You have to be careful when carving, so that you don´t slip. Now it´s really interesting to try out, what is the touch of this material is when printing. The material remind me a bit of rubber, but it seems to  chip easier when cutting with scissors than the green rubber plate which was used at least in schools many years ago.

MONOPRINT -testausta / MONOTYPE - Testing

 Miksiköhän pimein vuodenaika eli marraskuu on yleensä sellainen aika, jolloin aloitan monoprinttien kanssa testailun. Liittyisikö se siihen, että saa sotkea värien kanssa, sekoittaa eri tekniikoita, ehkä kerätä luonnosta viimeisiä lehtiä vedostukseen. Nyt ajattelin tehdä reunuksen monoprinttiin linopiirroksena. Monoprintti olisi noin 15 x 15 cm, johon mahtuisi iso osa jo valmiina olevista linopiirroksistani, kissoja, lehtiä, lintuja ja perhosia. Tarkoitus olisi tehdä linopiirrokslile tausta monoprinttinä. Testailin nyt taustaa vain töpsöttelemällä värillisiä musteita sienen palalla paperille lentävän kissalinon ympärille ja painelemalla lehtikuviota linoleimasimella ja leimasimusteella.

Why is it that the darkest time of the year or November is usually the time when I start testing monoprints or monotype. Maybe it´s because you can mess with colours, mix different techniques, perhaps collect the last leaves from the nature for printing. Now I think I make a linocut for the border. The monoprint would be approximately 15 x 15 cm, which is a good size and fits for the great part of my already existing small linocuts of cats, plants, birds and butterflies. My meaning is to make the background for linocuts as a monoprint. I tested now the background just blunting coloured inks with a piece of sponge on paper around a flying cat lino and printing leaf-motives with a lino stamp and ink pad.

IITTALAN TALVI / IITTALA´S WINTER: HANNU RIIKONEN, STEFAN BREMER, SUVI VASAMA

 

Nykynaivistien osuuden lisäksi Iittalan talvi -näyttelyssä on kolme erikoisnäyttelyä: Hannu Riikosen kaupunkikuvia, Stefan Bremerin valokuvia ja Suvi Vasaman nukkeveistoksia. Riikosen maalaukset ovat minulle jotain ihan uutta, tunsin  oikeastaan vain hänen isokokoiset veistoksensa, humoristiset ihmishahmot. Näissä maalauksissa 1980-luvulta kaupunki näyttäytyy jotenkin film noir-tunnelmaisena, hiukan uhkaavana ja groteskina. Bremerin valokuvissa naivistinen idea näkyy yllätyksellisyytenä, pikaisina otoksina juuri jonakin ohikiitävänä hetkenä ja osaksi myös kuvamanipulaatioina. Tällaista siis voi olla naivistinen valokuvaus. Nykynaivistien näyttelyssä mukana on Minna Iso-Lähteenmäen isohkoja valokuvakollaaseja, jotka tuntuvat olevan hiukan Bremerin sukulaisia. Vasaman veistokset ovat saaneet innoituksensa nukketeatterista, pari työtä on seinällä hyppäämässä ulos kehyksistään. Näyttely on auki 13.3.2022 asti. Kuraattorina on toiminut Veikko Halmetoja, jota osaksi on avustanut myös Ulla Heinonen. Hauskasti nämä eri osat kokeilevat naivismin rajoja.

In  addition to the part of contemporary Naïve artists there are three special sections in Iittala´s winter exhibition: Hannu Riikonen´s city scenes, Stefan Bremer´s photographs and Suvi Vasama´s puppet sculptures. Riikonen´s paintings are for me something quite new, actually I knew only his humorous human sculptures. In these paintings from 1980`s a city looks like a scene from a film noir movies, a bit threatening and grotesque. The Naïve art idea appears in Bremer´s photographs as surprice moments, quick snaps just an exact fleeting second and partly also as picture manipulations. So Naïve art photography can be something like this. IN the section of contemporary Naïve artists there are Minna Iso-Länteenmäki´s large photo collages, and they seem to be somewhat relative to Bremer´s photos. Vasama´s sculptures have got their inspiration from the puppet theatre, a pair of works are like jumping out of their frames on the wall. The exhibition is open till March 13, 2022. The curator is Veikko Halmetoja, partly assisted by Ulla Heinonen. These separate part of the exhibition are nicely trying out borders of Naïve art.

IITTALAN TALVI 2021/2022 / IITTALA´S WINTER 2021/2022

 Iittalan talvinäyttely 2021/2022 on nyt avattu ja on auki 13.3.2022 asti. Yksi osa näyttelystä on omistettu ns. nykynaivisteille, ja tässä osassa olen itsekin mukana. Näyttely on puukoulun alakerrassa ja mukana on noin 100 työtä noin 30 taiteilijalta. Näyttelyseinällä on kolme lino/pastelliani ja aulakaupassa lisää kehystettyjä ja kehystämättömiä linopiirroksia, kortteja, keittiöpyyhkeitä ja kalentereita. Näyttelyssä naivismin rajat venyvät, aiheet pursuilevat, värit räiskyvät. Tunteita riittää, huumorista hempeilyyn ja joukossa on tummempiakin sävyjä. Suurin osa töistä on maalauksia, mutta myös näkyy grafiikkaa, veistoksia ja lasimaalauksia. Tästä näyttelystä voi ostaa työt heti mukaan toisin kuin kesänäyttelyistä. Iso suositus!

Iittala`s winter exhibition 2021/2022 is now opened and open till March 13, 2022. One part of this exhibition is dedicated to so called contemporary naïve artists, and also I´m participating in this part. The exhibition is on the ground floor of the wooden school building, and there is about hundred works by about thirty artists. ON the wall of the exhibition I have tree lino & pastel works, and more framed and unframed linocuts, cards, tea towels and calendars are in the lobby shop. IN this exhibition the borders of naïve art are stretching, subjects are overflowing, colours are sparkling. There are enough of feelings, from humorous to tender and also darker shades. Mostly the works are paintings, but also graphics, sculpture and stained glass. You can buy works from this exhibition straight home, unlike from summer exhibitions. I recommend!

Ihannoidun kuvan lastenkirjastosta on piirtänyt englantilainen Edward Bawden (1903-1989). Koristeelliset hyllyt, antiikin Kreikan tyylinen patsas ja hahmot taivaalla, tyylikäs väritys luovat melkein hartaan kirjastomaisen tunnelman. Ja takaseinällä on iso kuva kissasta ja hiirestä, Bawdenille tyypillinen kissasommitelma yksinkertaisin viivoin. Kuva on vuodelta 1971 British Councilin kirjaluettelon takakannen kuvitus.

English Edward Bawden (1903-1989) has drawn this idealized picture of a children´s library. Decorative shelves, a sculpture and flying figures in the sky in antique Greek style are creating almost a devout library-like atmosphere. And in the background there is a large painting of a cat and mouse, a typical cat composition by Bawden with simple lines. The picture is from 1971, endpaper design for British Council Book Catalogue. 

PYYNIKIN HÄJYYT / PYYNIKKI BADASSES

Vedostin nyt yritysten ja erehdysten kautta kaksiosaisen linopiirrokseni kahdesta pyöreästä kissasta taustallaan Pyynikin ja Pispalan maisemat niin, että kissat ovat mustat ja tausta sininen tai harmahtava. Nyt värit tuntuvat toimivan eivätkä kissatkaan tunnu enää niin pelottavilta. Instgramissa @sissiliskonen ehdotti työlle nimeksi "Pyynikin häjyyt" - sehän  sopii kuin nappi otsaan. Taustalla ovat sekä Pyynikin näkötorni että Pispalan haulitorni ja vielä Siilinkarin majakkakin . Koko on  30 x 40 cm japanilaisella vinyylillä.

I printed now through trial and error my two-part linocut of two round cats with Pispala and Pyynikki scenes so, that the cats are black and the background either bluish or grayish coloured.  Now the colours seem to work, and the cats don´t look so scary. In Instagram @sissiliskonen suggested the name for this picture: "Pyynikki Badasses" ("Pyynikin häjyyt") - an d it fits fine. In the background there are both Pyynikki observation tower and Pispala shot tower and also Siilinkari lighthouse. The size is 30 x 40 cm and I used Japanese vinyl.
