PISPALAN TAIVAS / SKY OVER PISPALA

Linopiirrokseen Pispalasta ja kuusta oli jännittävää lisätä taivas pastellipiirroksena. Tila on aika iso (kuvan koko on 70 x 40 cm) ja aina ei tiedä, millaiseksi lopputulos tulee. Koskaan taivas ei tunnu olevan samanlainen kuin jossain aiemmassa tämän sarjan työssä. Tapanani on sotkea pehmeää pastellia sormilla ja jopa kovalla siveltimellä useita kerroksia päällekkäin. Jossain vaiheessa sitten tuntuu, että nyt saa riittää. Tässä kuvassa ylempi osa taivasta on vaaleampi, joten eiköhän sinne ole tulossa lintuparvi.

It was exciting to add a pastel drawing as a sky to my linocut of PIspala and moon. The space is quite big (size of the picture: 70 x 40 cm) and you don´t always know exactly how the sky will look like at the end. The sky seems never to be same as in some earlier picture of this series. I use to mess with soft pastel with my fingers and even stiff brush adding several layers on top of each other. At some stage I then decide, that now it´s enough. In this picture the upper part of the sky is lighter, so there might be birds there in the next stage.

Aloitin uuden linopiirros/pastellityön, jossa alaosassa on linopiirros Pispalasta portaineen. Nyt kuu on pieni linopiirros. Vedostin kuun oranssin väriseksi, toiselta puoleltaan punertavaksi. Tästä työstä on tulossa aika iso, 70 x 40 cm.

I started a new linocut & pastel work with a linocut of Pispala with steep steps at the bottom. Now the moon is a small linocut. I printed the moon orange, a bit reddish on the other side. This work is going to be rather big, 70 x 40 cm.

Kangasalalaisen Anu Pellisen kissakortissa on elämänohje: " Äiti opetti olemaan kohtelias ja leipomaan hyvää pullaa". Kissa seisoo rantakivellä ja taustalla suomalaiset kesämökit heijastuvat peilityyneen järvenpintaan. Pihlajanoksat kaartuvat hauskanmallisen kuvan yläreunassa. Kissalla on yllään esiliina, toisella kämmenellä sydän ja toisella kahvikuppi. Nähtävästi pullaa on tulossa.

There is a life guide on Anu Pellinen´s (from Kangasala) cat card: "Mother taught to be polite and bake a good bun". The cat is sitting on a beech stone, and in the background typical Finnish summer cottages are reflected in the mirror pad on the lake surface. Some rowan branches are curving on the upper part of a fun shaped picture. The cat is wearing an apron, a heart on the palm and a cup of coffee on the other. Apparently buns are coming along. 

POSLIINIKISSAT / PORCELAIN CATS

Varmaan melkein kaikille taiteen tekijöille on tyypillistä kokeilla erilaisia versioita samasta aiheesta. Ainakin itseltäni tämä piirre löytyy. Nyt jatkoin kokeilua ikkunankarmia esittävän linopiirrokseni kanssa. Joulukorttiaihetta varten leikkasin irti ikkunakohdat ja lisäsin kissat punaisissa lakeissa. Nyt tein kaksi posliinikissaa. Halusin ne sinisinä, joka olikin hiukan konstikkaampaa. Sinisten kissojen väritykseen tein sapluunan, ja onnistuihan se. Mutta keltaisen taustan tein käsin värittämällä.

I think it´s very typical for almost all people making art to try different versions of the same subject. At least I find this feature in me. Now I continued my experiments with a linocut of window frames. I cut the window part apart for a Christmas card theme and added the cats with red hats. Now I made two porcelain cats. I wanted them to be blue, and this proved to be a bit more complicated. I made s stencil for spreading blue colour on the cats, and it succeeded. But the yellow background was done hand colouring.

TONTTUKISSAT / ELF CATS

Onnenkissa -linopiirroksessa vanhasta ikkunankehyksestä oli ikkunassa kaktus ja ns. onnenkissa -hahmo. Leikkasin puukolla ikkunan sisäosat irralleen, jolloin voin tehdä ikkunaan jotain muuta kuin kaktuksen ja onnenkissan. Nyt kuvasta tuli joulukorttiaihe. Ikkunassa on kaksi kissaa tonttulakit päässä. Lakit on väritetty punaisiksi.

Lucky Cat linocut of an old window frame had in its window a cactus and so called Lucky Cat figure. I cut with a knife the window parts apart, so I could make something else than a cactus and Lucky Cat in the window. The picture came out now as a Christmas card. There are now in the window two cats wearing Christmas hats. I coloured the hats red.

PAPERIHUONE - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Galleria Villa Armaassa Kangasalla näin ihastuttavan grafiikan näyttelyn. Töissä näkyi koko grafiikan kirjo: puupiirroksia, etsauksia, akvarellimonotypioita, kaikenlaisia jännittäviä tekniikoiden yhdistelmiä ja kokeiluja. Näyttelyssä oli mukana noin  30 Paperihuone ry:n jäsentä. Paperihuone on 1998 Hämeenlinnassa perustettu grafiikan tekoon ja esittelyyn keskittyvä yhdistys. Grafiikan tekemisen innostus ja ilo näkyi näyttelyn töissä.

I saw a lovely graphic art exhibition at Gallery Villa Armas in Kangasala. There were visible the whole spectrum of graphics in these works: wood cuts, etchings, watercolour monotypes, all kind of exciting combinations and experiments of different techniques. About 30 members of Paperihuone ry (Paper Room group) were participating in this exhibition. Paperihuone is a group established in 1998 in Hämeenlinna, and it´s focusing on making and displaying graphic art. The enthusiasm and joy for making graphic art was visible in these works.

Kumpi meistä on enemmän pelästynyt, kissa vai minä korttia katsoessani? Gertrude Halsbandin (1917-1981) maalaus "Iso valkoinen kissa" on pelottava. Kissan silmät tuijottavat suurina ja keltaisina jotain selvästi pelottavaa. Kynnet ovat terävinä esillä. Muuten kuva on oikein kaunis, vehreitä puita, ruohoja, kukkia, apiloita ja tähtikirkas taivas.

Whichever is more frightened, the cat or I looking at the card? Gertrude Halsband´s (1917-1981) painting "The Big White Cat" is scary. The eyes of the cat are staring big and yellow at something clearly frightening. The nails are sharp and out. For the rest the picture is quite beautiful, green trees, grass, flowers, clovers and a starry sky.

SININEN PISPALAN JOULU / BLUE CHRISTMAS IN PISPALA

Vedostin lumisen Pispala-linopiirroksen tumman sinisenä. Nyt se näyttää lämpimämmältä ja sopii hyvin joulukortiksi. Kynttilälyhty, kissan raidat ja tähdenlento on väritetty keltaisiksi.

I printed my linocut of a snowy Pispala dark blue. Now it looks more warm and is alright for a Christmas card. The lantern with a candle, cat´s stripes and a shooting star are coloured yellow.

AAMUN MAA / THE LAND OF THE MORNING

 "Aamun maa" on saanut myös nimensä Juicen musiikista. Tässä linopiirros/pastellissa aamun kalpea valo heijastuu kelmeästä kuusta. Parvi lintuja lentää kuun edessä. Tämän työn koko on 50 x 30 cm.

"The Land of the Morning" was also named after Juice´s music. The pale light of the morning is reflecting on the sallow moon in this linocut & pastel work. The size is 50 x 30 cm.

Uusi keltainen kuu ilmestyi Pispala-linopiirroksen ylle.  Ja sitten myös kalpea taivas. Tavoittelen tässä pastellitaivaassa hentoa aamun valoa. Siksi iso kuukin on aika vaalean oranssinkeltainen.

A new yellow appeared over a linocut of Pispala. And then also a pale sky. I´m reaching a gentle morning light in this pastel sky. That´s why even the big moon is quite light orange / yellow.

E. Boxin maalaus "Eedenin puutarha" on selvästi naivistinen ja siinä on liuta symboleita. Mitä merkinnevät takorautaportin takana pilvissä kulkeva pariskunta (Aatami ja Eeva?), kaksi liihottelevaa enkeliä ja outo puna/keltainen kuvio taivaalla? Eläimet on teljetty aidan ja portin taakse. Yhden puun rungon ympäri kiertyvät jouluvalot. Lammessa kasvaa lumpeita. Ehkä hylje pääsee uimaan lampeen. Hirvi ja karhu yrittävät selvästi pois puutarhasta. Ja onhan siellä kaksi kissaeläintäkin: leijona ja gepardi. Varsinkin pilkullinen gepardi näyttää ihan ystävälliseltä kotikissalta.

"Garden of Eden", a painting by E. Box is Naïve and there are a lot of symbols. What ever are meaning a couple (Adam and Eve?) walking on the clouds behind the iron gates, two flying angels and a strange red & yellow shape in the sky? The animals are locked behind a wall and gate. Christmas lights are circling around the trunk of a tree. Waterlilies are flowering in the bond. Perhaps the seal could swim in the pond. And there are two felines: a lion and cheetah. Especially the spotted cheetah looks like a friendly domestic cat.

IITTALAAN TAIDELAINAAMOON / TO IITTALA´S ART LOAN SERVICE

Kolme uutta työtä ovat lähdössä Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyn taidelainaamoon. Syksy tuli yllättäen Suomeen kun pakkasin taulut autoon. Olo oli kuin naparetkelle lähdössä. Onneksi aurinko tuli taas esiin ja tuulikin tyyntyi. Kesä jatkuu edelleen.

Three new works are on their way to Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition´s Art Loan Service. Autumn came suddenly to Finland when I was packing the pictures to the car. The feeling was like I was on my way to the arctic circle. Luckily the sun came out again and also the wind calmed down. The summer is continuing.

VIISI KUUMAILMAPALLOA / FIVE HOT AIR BALLOONS

Tätä olen aikonut tehdä jo jonkun aikaa, ja nyt sen tein. Vedostin Pispalan taloja ja järvi-sarjan linopiirroksista kuumailmapallon yhdessä kaikkien viiden alaosan kanssa. Onko niillä nyt niin kovin paljon  eroa. Kaikki viisi ovat kuitenkin erilaisia alaosastaan. Koko näillä melkein  identtisillä kuvilla on 60 x 20 cm.

I have been planning to do this for a while, and now I did it. I printed the hot air balloon from the series of linocuts of Pispala houses & lake with every five bottom parts. Is there really any difference with these pictures. Still, all five are different at the bottom part of the picture. The size of these almost identical pictures is 60 x 20 cm.

Ruotsalainen Thomas Wester on kuvannut tämän kissan. Aluksi oli vaikea hahmottaa, mitä tässä kuvassa oikein on. Sitten erottuvat kissan kaksi silmää ja valkoinen kuono. Onko kissa peloissaan vai vihainen? Kissa on piilossa sängynpeiton laskoksissa. Aavemainen vaalea hehku kissan alla korostaa kuvan uhkaavaa sävyä.

Swedish Thomas Wester has taken this photo of a cat. At first it was difficult to outline, what is actually happening in this picture. Then you distinguish cat´s two eyes and white muzzle. Is the cat afraid or angry? The cat is hiding in the folds of a bedspread. A ghostly  pale glow under the cat is highlighting the threatening tone of the picture.

NÄKÖTORNIN JUURELLA / BENEATH THE OBSERVATION TOWER

"Näkötornin juurella", uusi linopiirros kuvaa yhtä Tampereen maamerkkiä, Pyynikin näkötornia. Torni on rakennettu vuonna 1929, ja vuosiluku näkyy sisäänkäynnin yläpuolella. Näkötorniin tulleet ovat parkkeeranneet autonsa ja sähköpotkulautansa tornin juurelle. Vasemmalla harjun  korkeimmalla kohdalla vartioi kaksi kissaa. Valokuvassa ei kunnolla näy kimalle, jota lisäsin järven pintaan auringon heijastukseen. Lino on aika iso: 30 x 40 cm.

"Beneath the Observation Tower", a new linocut depicts one of landmarks of Tampere, Pyynikki observation  tower. The tower was built in 1929 and the year is seen ovet the entrance. People coming to the tower have parked their cars and electric kickboards beneath the tower. On the left on the highest place of the ridge are two cats guarding. The glitter I added to the surface of the lake on the reflection of the sun is not quite visible in the photo. This lino is quite big: 30 c 40 cm.

PYYNIKIN NÄKÖTORNI - aloitusta / PYYNIKKI OBSERVATION TOWER - Starting

Aloitin uuden aika ison (30 x 40 cm) linopiirroksen kaiverruksen. Aiheena on Pyynikin näkötorni ja näkymä Pyynikin harjulta Pyhäjärvelle. Kaksi kissaa on kuvan vasemmassa alakulmassa eli kaivertaessa oikealla puolella. Tämä japanilainen vinyylilevy on aika kovaa, joten kaiverrus vaatii keskittymistä ja aikaa. Pfeil -merkkiset terät ovat parhaat tähän hommaan kunhan muistaa välillä teroitella niitä.

I started to carve a new linocut, which is rather big at 30 x 40 cm. The subject is Pyynikki observation tower and a scene to Pyhäjärvi from the Pyynikki ridge. Two cats are on the left corner of the picture ie. on the right side when carving. This Japanese vinyl sheet is rather stiff and hard, so carving it requires some concentration and time. Pfeil cutters are best for this job, you just have to remember to sharpen them in between.
