PIENIÄ LINTUJA / SMALL BIRDS

Linoleikkaukseen Pispalan harjulta halusin kanahaukan seuraksi muutaman pienemmän linnun. Tein pienet linoleikkaukset harakasta, rastaasta ja parista pääskysestä. Nehän siellä aina pyrähtävät pakoon kun taivaalle ilmestyy kanahaukka.

I wanted a couple of smaller birds to accompany the goshawk in my linocut of Pispala Ridge. I made small linocuts of a magpie, thrush and a couple of swallows. These always sprint to the flight when they see a goshawk appearing to the sky.

Kissat tuntuvat jotenkin pitävän symmetriasta. Ne haluavat istua pöydän keskellä tai kuten tässä juuri lampun alla. Tämä pehmoinen kissa kallistaa päätään, jossa on hauska valkoinen symmetrinen kuvio. Mutta jalkojen väritys onkin epäsymmetrinen, toinen jalka on valkoinen ja toinen valkosukkainen jalka on musta. Kuvan on ottanut Brian Quinn, ja kortti on vuodelta 1987.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

Cats seem somehow like symmetry. They want to sit in the middle of the table or like here just under a lamp. This soft cat is tilting his/hers head, which has a fun white symmetrical pattern. But the pattern of the legs is asymmetrical, the other leg is white and the other white-stocking one is black. The picture was taken by Brian Quinn, and the card is from the year 1987.

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.

KANAHAUKKA / GOSHAWK

Tein erillisen linoleikkauksen, jonka voisin lisätä  Pispalan harjulta - linoleikkaukseen - kanahaukan. Ehkä tämä iso haukka kaipaisi ympärilleen muutaman pienemmän linnun. Pispalan harjulla haukkoja pakoon lentää ainakin rastaita ja harakoita.

I made a separate linocut, which I could add to my linocut of Pispala ridge - a goshawk. Perhaps this big hawk would require some smaller bids around it. Over Pispala ridge at least thrushes and magpies fly away when they see a goshawk.

AURINGON YMPÄRI / AROUND THE SUN

Mikäpä olisikaan parempi aika muistella kesää kuin joulu! Kesällä laineet välkkyvät järvellä. Tähän kuvaan tuli joukko perhosia ja hyönteisiä sekä lepakko: Ne kiertävät keltaisen auringon ympärillä. Tausta on pastellipiirros, jonka päälle on vedostettu linoleikkauksia. Hohtoa laineille lisää hopeglitteri. Kuva on aika iso, noin 60 x 45 cm, ja se hehkuu hauskasti seinällä pimeässä, kun kynttilöiden tai lamppujen valo osuu laineille.

What would be a better time to remember last summer than at Christmas! In summer the waves are gleaming on the lake. A group of butterflies and insects and one bat came into this picture. They are circling around the yellow sun. The background is a pastel drawing and the butterflies and insects are linocuts. Silver glitter adds shimmer to the waves. The picture is quite big, about 60 x 45 cm and it glows quite nice on the wall when the light of candles or lamps hits it.

Tuntemattoman ranskalaisen tekijän kuvan nimi on Onnen kissa (Chat porte-bonheur). Postikortti on hankittu vuonna 1998, mutta ehkä kuva on alkujaan mainos. Mustaa kissaa on onnistanut. Se asuu selvästi hemmoteltuna varakkaassa kodissa, pitsiverhojen ja samettityynyjen keskellä. Se tuntuu sanovan: "Älä nyt häiritse minua, haluan ottaa nokoset."

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

The picture of an unknown French artist is called Lucky Cat (Chat porte-bonheur). The card was bought in 1998, but perhaps the picture was originally a poster. The black cat really is in luck. She clearly lives pampered in a wealthy house, in the middle of lace curtains and velvet cushions. She seems to say: "Don`t disturb me, I want to take a nap".

TULIVUORI t-paita / VOLCANO t-shirt

Joulukuun lomalla Gran Canarialla ehdottomasti käytetyimmäksi t-paidakseni osoittautui paita, jossa kuvana on linoleikkaukseni Tulivuoren juurella. Kuva sopi hyvin Kanarialle, jossa saaren keskellä oleva vanha tulivuori näkyy oikeastaan koko ajan, ja etenkin kun pyöräilee ympäriinsä. Tulivuori ilmestyy eteen vähän väliä palmujen takaa. Odotankin taas mielenkiinnolla, miten Kanarian aurinko ja värit näkyvät töissäni täällä keskellä Suomen pimeää ja kylmää talvea.

A t-shirt with a picture of my linocut Under the Volcano proved to be  absolutely the most used on a December holiday in Gran Canaria. The picture suited the Canaries fine because there is an old volcano in the middle of the island and it is visible almost from everywhere, and especially when you cycle around. The volcano comes out at short intervals from behind the palms. Now I am waiting eagerly, how the sun  and the colours of the Canaries show themselves in my works here in Finland´s dark and cold winter.

Englantilaisen Mary Feddenin (1915-2012) öljymaalauksen nimi on osuvasti Sleeping Cat / Nukkuva kissa. Kortissa perspektiivi on hauskasti vinksallaan. Kissa tuntuu melkein liukuvan unissaan alas pöydän pinnalta. Valkoinen unikko on paisunut unenomaisesti valtavaksi. Viinirypäleet ja sitruuna leijuvat ilmassa. Kissan turkin ja koko kuvan pehmeät ruskeat sävyt ovat herkullisia. Katsoja haluaisi kietoutua hartiahuiviin, istua tuolille ja lukea ehkä kirjaa.

The name of this oil painting by English Mary Fedden (1915-2012) is aptly Sleeping Cat. In this card everything is in a fun wonky angle. The cat seems to be almost sliding over the edge of the table in it´s sleep. The white poppy has puffed up enormously like in a dream. The grapes and a lemon are floating in the air. The fur of the cat and all the brown hues in the picture are delicious. The viewer would like to wrap the shawl around his/hers shoulders and perhaps read a book.

PISPALAN HARJULTA: osa 8 / PISPALA RIDGE: Part Eight

Kokeilin vielä yhtä versiota tehdä taivas Pispalan harjulta -linoleikkaukseeni tökkimällä sienellä sinistä ja hiukan keltaista akryyliväriä. Hyönteiset ja perhoset ovat erillisiä pieniä linoleikkauksia, jotka vedostin taivaan päälle. Tästä tuli aika kesäinen kuva.

I tested still one version to make the sky for my linocut of Pispala Ridge by sponging blue and yellow acrylic colour. The insects and butterflies are separate small linocuts and I pulled them on the coloured sky. This is quite a summery picture now.

 Vielä yksi uusi t-paita tuli postissa. Tämän paidan kuvassa on linoleikkaukseni Kissat korissa ja paita on valkoinen.

Still one new t-shirt came by mail. The picture in this shirt is my linocut Cats in Basket and the shirt is white.

Skotlantilaisen Elisabeth Blackadderin (s. 1931) kissat ovat upeita. Usein hänen kissansa ovat grafiikkaa, tässä  etsausta ja akvatintaa vuodelta 1995,  ja niissä on nopeasti tehdyn luonnoksen tyyliä. Tässäkin kuvassa on oikeastaan kolme kissaa tai kolme versiota samasta mustavalkoisesta kissasta. Suurimman osan kuvasta täyttää kissan musta turkki, jota voisi melkein silittää.

Scottish Elisabeth Blackadder´s (b. 1931) cats are gorgeous. Often her cats are made as graphic art, here etching and aquatint in 1995, and they have the style of quickly made sketches. In this picture there is actually three cats or three versions of the same black and white cat. The black fur of a cat fills the largest part of the picture, and you could almost give it a stroke.

PISPALAN HARJULTA: osa 7 / PISPALA RIDGE: Part Seven

Kokeilin tällä kertaa Pispalan harjulta linoleikkaukseeni sinipunertavan taivaan tekoa akryylivärillä ja sienellä tököttämällä ennen hyönteisten ja perhosten vedostamista. Aurinko on vedostettu oranssin värisenä. Maisema vaikuttaa melkein öiseltä.

This time I tested to make the purplish sky on my linocut of Pispala Ridge by poking with a sponge before printing the insects and butterflies. The sun is pulled with orange ink. The scene looks almost like at night. 

FILM NOIR T-PAITA / T-SHIRT

Taas innostuin teettämään uuden t-paidan, nyt linoleikkauksesta Film Noir. Tietenkin mustana.

Again I became inspired and ordered a new t-shirt from my linocut Film Noir. Black of course.

Saksalaisen Walter Schelsin (s. 1936) valokuvan nimi on yksinkertaisesti Kissa. Kortti on vuodelta 1992. Kissa näyttää sanovan jotain, suu on puoliksi auki ja silmät katsovat suoraan kuvaajaan. Mestarillista on kuvassa myös mustan ja valkoisen muodostamat kuviot, kissan karvat, viikset ja kulmakarvat. 

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

German Walter Schels`s (b. 1936) photograph is called simply Cat. The card is from 1992. The cat seems to have something to say, it´s mouth is half open and the eyes are staring straight to the photographer. The patterns of black and white, the hair, whiskers and eyebrows of the cat are also masterly done in the picture.
