KERTTU HORILA -FINLAYSON ART AREA

 Finlayson Art Area / Himmelblau galleriassa on tosi iso kesänäyttely, hieno kokemus, sekä taide että koko ympäristö. Ihan saa olla ylpeä kotikaupungistaan Tampereesta! Ehdottomasti koskettavin osuus ovat Kerttu Horilan betoniveistokset: vanhempia naishenkilöitä, kissoja ja ihania ilmeitä, tekstuureja ja värejä. Töiden valaistuskin entisissä tehdassaleissa osuu kohdilleen.

Finlayson Art Area / Himmelblau gallery has a really big summer exhibition, a great experience, both the art and the whole environment. You can be really proud of your hometown Tampere! The most touching part is definitely Kerttu Horila's concrete sculptures: older women, cats and lovely expressions, textures and colors. The lighting of the works in the former factory halls is also spot on.

VALKOISET REVONTULET - taivasta / WHITE AURORA BOREALIS - Sky

Valkoisten revontulien teko pehmeillä pastelleilla mtakkuaa edelleen. Välillä taivas muuttuu liian tummaksi. Sitten luulen ymmärtäväni, että valkoisten revontulien teko pitää tehdä viimeiseksi valkoisilla pastelleilla. Päätös on vaikea, aloittaako tummasta vai vaaleasta väristä ja kasvattaa siitä sitten revontulia....

Making white northern lights with soft pastels is still a struggle. Sometimes the sky gets too dark. Then I think I understand that making white northern lights should be done last with white pastels. It's a difficult decision whether to start with a dark or light color and then grow the northern lights from there....

 Tämä suuri kaunis suruvaippa-perhonen (Nymphalis antiopa) vietti tunteja lintujen uima-altaalla. Ensimmäinen suruvaippa tänä kesänä! Malli liinopiirrokseen.

Todella mestarillinen vesivärin käsittely tässä Sarah Maycockin vesivärimaalauksessa "Kissa ja meri. Mustavalkoinen kissa istuu mäellä ja tuijottaa kaukaisuuteen merelle. Kaloistako se haaveilee?Leveät vesivärisiveltimen jäljet on tehty varmaan tosi nopeasti, ja hieno on tuo kissan varjokin. Meri on tehty aika kuivalla siveltimellä ja saatu aikaan ihan omanlaisensa jälki, rosoisempi, kuin valon  heijastus laineilla. Kortin takana on R.S.Thomasin runo:

"Muodollinen yhtälö

kotoisasta kehräyksestä

meren peilin 

kylmien sisäosien kanssa."

Truly masterful handling of watercolor in this watercolor painting by Sarah Maycock "Cat and the Sea".  A black and white cat sits on a hill and stares into the distance at the sea. Is it dreaming of fish? The broad watercolor brush marks were probably made really quickly, and the cat's shadow is also beautiful. The sea is done with a rather dry brush and a lovely trace has been created, more jagged, like the reflection of light on the waves. On the back of the card there is a poem by R.S.Thomas:

 "The formal equation of
A domestic purr
With the cold interiors
Of the sea´s mirror."

 

VALKOISET REVONTULET - aloitusta / WHITE AURORA BOREALIS - BEGINNING

 

Pispala-linopiirroksen yläpuolelle taivaalle on tulossa valkoisia revontulia. Oletko koskaan nähnyt valkoisia revontulia? En minäkään. Mutta näkemieni kuvien perusteella on olemassa harvoin nähtyjä valkoisia revontulia. Niiden hahmottelu taivaalle onkin vaikeampaa kuin ajattelin vain jonkinlaisten tentemusten mukaan. Onneksi pehmeää pastellia voi pyyhkiä pois ja ikäänkuin aloitta uudestaan.

Above the Pispala linocut, white aurora borealis are coming into the sky. Have you ever seen white aurora borealis? Neither have I. But from the pictures I've seen, there are rarely seen white aurora borealis. Depicting them in the sky is harder than I thought, just based on some kind of trial and error. Fortunately, you can erase the soft pastel and start over again.

Seurasin mökillä parvekkeen kaiteiden välistä kahden linnun uintituokiota uima-altaalla. Punarinta? Onko toinen näistä uimaopettaja?

I watched two birds swimming in the pool from between the balcony railings at the cottage. A robin? Is one of them a swimming instructor?

KELTAORANSSI TAIVAS / ORANGE YELLOW SKY

Taivas alkaa muotoutua Pispalan kattojen ylle. Nyt pastellia tulikin oranssinkeltaisena taivaanrantaan alas ja lintujen taakse ylös. Mitähän  tulee keskelle taivasta?

The sky is starting to take shape over the rooftops of Pispala. Now orange-yellow pastel colour has come down to the horizon and up behind the birds. What is coming up in the middle of the sky?
 

LINNUT TAIVAALLE / BIRDS TO THE SKY

 

Suunnittelen uutta linopiirrosten ja pastellitaivaan yhdistelyä, isompaan sarjaan 70 x 40 cm kokoisiin versioihin. Tässä kuvassa on alaosassa linopiirros Pispalan pihasta portaiden vieressä. Ylös taivaalle tulee muutama linopiirroslintu. Veostin jo isommat linnuista ja pienemmät linnut vedostan sitten lopuksi suoraan pastellin päälle.

I am planning a new combination of linocuts and pastel sky, for a larger series in 70 x 40 cm versions. In this picture, at the bottom, there is a linocut of Pispala's yard next to the stairs. A few linocut birds are coming up into the sky. I have already printed the larger birds and will finally print the smaller birds directly on the pastel.

MIkäs muu kuin "Kissa laatikossa" on nimeltään tämä serbialaisen taiteilijan Endre Penovacin (s.1956) vesivärimaalauksen nimi. Kuvaa on vaikea ensinäkemältä pitää vesivärimaalauksena, itselleni tuli mieleen joku graafinen työ. Vesivärin jälki on pehmeä, utuinen, mestarillinen ja hauras. Kissan silmätkin on vedetty pikaisesti siveltimen kärjellä. Endre Penovac kertoo, että hänen lempimallinsa on oma musta kissansa Boszi (Noita). Ehkä se ei ole tämä suloinen kissanpoika.

What else but "Cat in a Box" is the name of this watercolor painting by Serbian artist Endre Penovac (b.1956). It is difficult to consider the picture a watercolor painting at first glance, I was reminded of some graphic work. The watercolor trace is soft, hazy, masterful and fragile. Even the cat's eyes have been quickly drawn with the tip of the brush. Endre Penovac says that his favorite model is his own black cat Boszi (Witch). Maybe it is not this sweet kitten.

TAIVAS VÄLKKYVÄISIN JALOKIVIN / SPARKLING JEWELS OF THE SKY

 

Taivas on syvän sinistä pehmeää pastellia. Taivaanrannassa viipyy vielä päivän kellertävä kajo.Pieni parvi pääskysiä lentää Pispalan ylitse. Alaosan Pispala-maisema portaineen, iso kuparinvärinen kuu ja pääskyset ovat linopiirroksia. Pieni pyöreä kuun kaksonen on usein taivaanrannassa näkyvä iso tähti eli planeetta Venus. Taivaalla näkyy myös pyöreän mallinen seitsemän tähden  sikermä, tahdenlento. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm ja nimen se sai V.A.Koskenniemen runosta. "Taivas välkkyväisin jalokivin omaa ylhäisyyttään vartioi".

The sky is a deep blue soft pastel. The yellowish light of the day still lingers on the horizon. A small flock of swallows flies over Pispala. The Pispala landscape with its steps, the large copper-colored moon and the swallows in the lower part are linocuts. The small round moon's twin is the large star often seen on the horizon, i.e. the planet Venus. A round constellation of seven stars, shooting stars, can also be seen in the sky. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm and it got its name from V.A. Koskenniemi's poem. "The Sky Quards Its Own Nobility with Sparkling Jewels".
