GILLIAN WEARING & CLAUDE CAHUN - NÄYTTELY /EXHIBITION + HOWARD HODGKIN

NPG:n toinen näyttely esitteli Howard Hodgkinin (1932-2017) muotokuvamaalauksia.

Still exhibitions in London:

French Claude Cahun (1894-1954) was quite a new and interesting acquaintance in an exhibition in National Portrait Gallery together with Gillian Wearing (b. 1963). Cahun took during her life a large number of self-portraits dressing up for different roles or masks. Her photos were clearly ahead of their time, liberated, challenging and brave. I didn't quite grasp the role of Wearing, except that she admired Cahun and disguises in her self-portraits. But her own often with a face mask covered self-portraits felt artificial and superficial.
Another exhibition in NPG displayed Howard Hodgkin's (1932-2017) portraits paintings. There was some idea: he painted portraits as abstract, colourful interpretations of the feelings and recollections of people and their surroundings.

PICASSO PORTRAITS -NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Näyttely Picasso Portraits Picasson muotokuvista National Portrait Galleryssa Lontoossa on elämys. Vaikutteista huolimatta muotokuvissa on kuitenkin aina jotain Picassomaista, muutamalla pienellä yksityiskohdalla loihdittu kuvattavan kohteen persoonallisuuteen liittyvä piirre: asento, silmät, kasvot, tukka tai vaatteet. Hengästyttävä kokemus!

***********
This exhibition Picasso Portraits of Picasso's portraits in National Portrait Gallery in London is a thrill. At least after seeing this you have to admit, that Picasso was a genius - and a productive one. In this exhibition you can follow trough his portraits how his styles developed and changed. Also it is finely depicted from where Picasso absorbed influences to his own art works. He really was an ingenious copier, but he maintained still his very own mark in all his works. Picasso seemed to be interested in all techniques: painting, drawing, graphics, comic strips, caricatures, ceramics, and sculpting. His influences are clearly seen in many of his works: Matisse, Munch, Touloise-Lautrec, Braque, Velasguez and many others. In addition to self-portraits there are his wives, his children and his close circle in the portraits. In spite of all the influences there still is always something very Picasso-style in the portraits, with a few small details captured feature linked with the personality of his subject: the posture, eyes. face, hair or clothes. A breath-taking experience!

Pidin erityisesti Egglestonin vanhempien naisten kuvista. Niissä on jotain uhmakasta, elämänkokemusta ja aitoutta ilman poseerausta. Entäs kuva rikkaasta isännästä ja häntä koko ikänsä palvelleesta mustasta apulaisesta - samalla tavalla kädet taskussa kuin peilikuvana.

*********
The photographs of American William Eggleston (b. 1939) are powerful. In this Exhibition called Portraits in National Portrait Gallery, London you can inspect his portraits of ordinary people from Tennessee from the 1960's onward. The earliest photographs are black and white, but his experiments with colour photography are pioneering. I liked, especially, Eggleston's pictures of older women. They contain some obstinacy, life experience and sincerity without any posing. And how about the photo of an old rich man and his lifelong black servant - hand in the pockets like in a mirror image.

BP PORTRAIT AWARD 2016 - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Antonio Laglia: Portrait in the Mirror: The Veil
Vuosittaiseen BP:n (British Petroleum) sponsoroimaan muotokuvien katselmukseen BP Portrait Award National Portrait Galleryyn on ihan pakko päästä, jos sattuu olemaan näyttelyn aikana Lontoossa. Ehkä he olivat suostuvaisimpia poseeraamaan.

It is a must to visit the annual review BP Portrait Award sponsored by BP (British Petroleum) in National Portrait Gallery if you happen to be in London during this exhibition.
Brian Sayers: Karina in Her Raincoat
The works for this year's exhibition were selected from 2557 portraits from all over  the world. For several previous years Photorealism has been the dominant style - every wrinkle, hair or pore have been painted more precise than in a photograph. Now there were fewer of these. Happily there were several portraits, in which the artists had finely depicted the feeling, spirituality or the presence of the atmosphere of a person. Children or friends were often as models. Perhaps they were more willing to pose. If there were any other model the result has been a self portrait - and there were a lot of these.

WILLIAM MORRIS - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Arts and Crafts -tyylisuunnan suurena ihailijana odotukset olivat isot kun astuin Lontoon National Portrait Galleryn näyttelyyn "Anarchy & Beauty. William Morris and his legacy 1860-1960". Näyttelyn lopun venytys William Morrisin perinnöstä aina 1960-luvun Terence Conraniin tuntuu suomalaisesta aika keinotekoiselta.

Prioress* s Tale Wardrobe
As a big admirer of Arts and Crafts movement my expectations were high in London when I entered National Portrait Gallery`s exhibition  "Anarchy & Beauty. William Morris and his legacy 1860-1960". This exhibition displayed the art movement which developed around William Morris (1834-1896). And there were some fine furniture, ceramics and pieces of jewelry, but there could have been much more. Perhaps the location for this exhibition in National Portrait gallery was a bit difficult for the organizers: there were far too many portraits of the members of Arts and Craft movement, often bearded men. There was a lot of text, and you could focus thoroughly on Arts and Crafts movement' s political and other manifests, evoking of the guild tradition and it' s distraction of it´s own absurdity. I can only admire the appreciation of handicraft and Arts and Crafts movement' s belief, that even common people wanted and could decorate their home with beautiful handmade furniture, objects and textiles. The end of the exhibition stretched William Morris´ Legacy even to 1960`s and Terence Conran, a bit artificial thinking in my Finnish mind.

DAVID BAILEY - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Englantilaisen David Baileyn (s. 1938) laaja valokuvanäyttely Lontoon National Portrait Galleryssa on nimeltään "Bailey´s Stardust" (Baileyn tähtisumua).

English photographer David Bailey´s (b. 1938) wide exhibition is in National Portrait Gallery in London is called "Bailey´s Stardust". Of course, there is a lot of stars: models, film stars, Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, politicians and artists. Bailey´s photos of his wife and children and also self portraits are beautiful. Bailey is best known for these profiles, and he was even a model for a fashion photographer in the film Blow-up. Bailey is the master of the black and white photography, the shades in the photos are delicious. I liked most of the photos depicting London´s East End, the street views and local personalities ( i.a. Kray brothers/criminals). Bailey originated himself from the same modest surroundings, perhaps that is why in these pictures there is something homely warm and understanding. Bailey´s photo series from India, Australia or Africa are handsome, but not as touching.
I have now seen during a short period in three art exhibitions (Andy Warhol, Patrick Hamilton, David Bailey) pictures of celebrities and in every exhibition there has been several works about for example Mick Jagger. Hopefully there is not in behind only museums desire to attract and please the public by pictures of celebrities.

LONTOOSSA RIITTÄÄ NÄYTTELYITÄ / LONDON IS FULL OF EXHIBITIONS

Johannes Vermeer

Vermeerin teoksia on aika mahdoton erottaa samanaikaisten taiteilijoiden töistä.

Johannes Vermeer

National Portrait Galleryn tämänvuotisessa BP:n muotokuvakilpailussa hämmästyttää viime vuoden tapaan edelleen tekijöiden innostus hyperrealistiseen kasvojen tulkintaan. Jokainen ihohuokonen, ihokarva ja hikipisara varmasti näkyvät.

Leslie Watts: Pamela Newell Sellers

The Photographer´s Gallery oli muuttanut uusiin avariin tiloihin ja näyttely "Mass Observation: This is Your Photo" olikin iso otos MO:n arkistoista. Mo perustettiin vuonna
John Hinde

I spend a couple of days in London, but managed to visit only a few of hundreds of art exhibitions. These are some of the smaller ones.

In The National Gallery´s intimate exhibition "Vermeer & Music" there are Johannes Vermeer´s (1632-1675) paintings and detailed descriptions of his painting techniques along the paintings of his contemporaries and music instruments of the 1600`s. If you happen to be there at a right time, you can even listen to a small concert played with the old instruments of 1600`s. It is almost impossible to separate Vermeer´s paintings from the paintings of his contemporaries. Vermeer has been copied and forged a lot, and is it quite sure that all the Vermeers in this exhibition are really real. In many of his paintings the women have small, round, still and amateurishly painted faces; could the artist be the same that painted The Girl with a Pearl Earring?

In National Portrait Gallery´s BP:s Portrait Award Competition´s exhibition this year you can be surprised of competitors enthusiasm for portraying faces with an extreme hyper realism. Every pore, hair and drop of sweat are really visible.

Humphrey Spender
The Photographer´s Gallery has moved to new bigger spaces and the exhibition "Mass Observation: This is Your Photo" was also a large part of MO:s archives. Mo was founded in 1937 and the aim of it´s photographers has been to capture the everyday lives of the ordinary people. John Hinde (1916-1997) is perhaps the most valued of these MO´s photographer´s and his pictures of a circus and travels & landscapes are gorgeous, the colours are almost magical. Also Julian Trevelyan (1910-1988)´s photos of Bolton and Humphrey Spender (1910-2005)´s  photographs of the common people on vacation and working were touching.

BP PORTRAIT AWARD 2012 - näyttely / Exhibition

Carl Randall
National Portrait Galleryssa Lontoossa järjestetään nyt jo 33. kerran vuosittainen muotokuvamaalauksien näyttely:  valitut ja palkitut työt. 23 viimeistä vuotta näyttelyä on sponsoroinut BP (British Petroleum). Tänä vuonna 2.187 maalauksesta ympäri maapalloa näyttelyyn on valittu 55 työtä. Kuvia sukulaisista, tuttavista, julkisuuden henkilöistä sekä omakuvia.

In National Portrait Gallery in London there is already 33rd time the yearly exhibition of portraits: selected and rewarded paintings. Last 23 years the exhibition has been sponsored by BP (British Petroleum). This year there are 55  selected portraits from 2.187 works all over the world. Pictures of relatives, friends, public figures , and self-portraits.

Aleah Chapin

Ignacio Estudillo
This year the dominating style seems to be the photo realism. Many portraits look like copied from photographs so that every pore and hair of beard is sharply visible. A good example is 1st price: Aleah Chapin´s  naked "Auntie", likewise 2nd price: Ignacio Estudillo´s almost black naked man. Carl Randall´s work "Mr. Kitazawa´s Noodle Bar" which got a honorary award was the best of these photo realistic paintings, the loneliness and separateness of people is finely emphasized in this painting seen from above.

Alan Salisbury

I preferred the portraits that had some background, working rooms, furniture, objects, and colours. Alan Salisbury´s self-portrait with a basket full of other artists´ self-portraits on fruits (after Caravaggio) was fun. Also Tony Noble´s portraits of a painter´s studio with all the reflections was enchanting.

Tony Noble

NPG on hankkinut kokoelmiinsa joitakin näissä jokavuotisissa muotokuvanäyttelyissä olleita töitä. Olen aiemminkin ihaillut esimerkiksi James Lloydin muotokuvaa Sir Paul Brierley Smithistä vuodelta 1997. Siinä henkilön tausta (vaatteet, kankaat) tulee hyvin mukaan.

NPG has acquired to its collections some of the works from these yearly portrait exhibitions. I have already earlier admired for example James Lloyd´s portrait  of Sir Paul Brierley Smith from 1997. In this picture the background of the person (clothes, fabrics) comes along fine.

LUCIAN FREUD

Lucian Freud
LUCIAN FREUD - TAIDENÄYTTELY

Lontoon erinomaista taidenäyttelytarjontaa: Lucian Freudin (1922-2011) muotokuvia National Portrait Galleryssa: Painting People.

Lucian Freud on ehdottomasti yksi maailman parhaista muotokuvamaalareista.

Martin Gayford on kirjoittanut omista "istunnoistaan" mielenkiintoisen tuntuisen teoksen/päiväkirjan: Man With a Blue Scarf.

Näyttely on järjestetty krologisesti.

David Hockney

LUCIAN FREUD - EXHIBITION

One of London´s excellent art exhibitions is Lucian Freud´s (1922-2011) Painting Portraits in National Portrait Gallery.

Lucian Freud is definitely one of best portrait painters ever. He did not follow any contemporary art trends. He followed his own style very slowly from almost photorealistic "beautiful" paintings to almost revoltrealistic pictures of skin and flesh in the last portraits.

Freud painted his portraits very slowly. David Hockney estimated that he sat for his portrait 122 hours. But when Hockney asked Freud  to sit for his portrait, he sat only 2,5 hours. To sit as a model for Lucian Freud must have been a special experience. His studio doesn´t seem to be very comfortable, but conversations have been varied. Martin Gaylord has written a book/diary of his own sittings as a model: Man With a Blue Scarf.

The exhibition is arranged chronologically. The sensitive and big-eyed pictures from the early period are hauntingly  grave and in the final pictures there seems to be cement or sand mixed with the colour. It feels like there is something sinister growing on the skin and the feeling is not always nice. An effective and influential exhibition.
