Antonio Laglia: Portrait in the Mirror: The Veil

Vuosittaiseen BP:n (British Petroleum) sponsoroimaan muotokuvien katselmukseen BP Portrait Award National Portrait Galleryyn on ihan pakko päästä, jos sattuu olemaan näyttelyn aikana Lontoossa. Tämän vuoden näyttelyyn oli valittu muotokuvat kilpailuun lähetetystä 2557 työstä ympäri maapalloa. Useana aikaisempana vuonna muotokuvissa on vallinnut fotorealismi, jokainen ryppy, hius tai karva on kuvattu tarkemmin kuin valokuvassa. Nyt näitä näkyi vähemmän. Ilahduttavasti mukana oli paljon muotokuvia, joissa kuvattavan henkilön tunnetta, henkisyyttä tai läsnäolon tunnelmaa oli hienosti kuvattu. Lapset tai kaverit olivat usein malleina. Ehkä he olivat suostuvaisimpia poseeraamaan. Jos ei muuta mallia ole ollut, tuloksena on omakuva - ja niitä oli paljon.

Brian Sayers: Karina in Her Raincoat

The works for this year's exhibition were selected from 2557 portraits from all over  the world. For several previous years Photorealism has been the dominant style - every wrinkle, hair or pore have been painted more precise than in a photograph. Now there were fewer of these. Happily there were several portraits, in which the artists had finely depicted the feeling, spirituality or the presence of the atmosphere of a person. Children or friends were often as models. Perhaps they were more willing to pose. If there were any other model the result has been a self portrait - and there were a lot of these.
