PAINTERS' PAINTINGS - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Viisi päivää helteisessä Lontoossa - onneksi museoissa on ilmastointi! Ensimmäinen kohde oli National Galleryn näyttely Painters' Paintings. Hieno idea näyttelylle: valittujen muutaman taiteilijan  (Lucian Freud, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, Frederick Lord Leighton, George Frederick Watts, Sir Thomas Reynolds ja Anthony van Dyck) itselleen hankkimat taulut. Oli mielenkiintoista nähdä, millaisia taiteilijoita kukin oli kokoelmiinsa hankkinut ja olivatko ne jotenkin vaikuttaneet omaan tyyliin. Varhaisemmat taiteilijat suosivat klassikoita ja renessanssia, suosituimmat tuntuivat olevan Tizian ja hiukan uudemmista Delacroix. Esikuvat vaikuttivat myös omakuviin, minkä voi hyvin  kokea kun vierekkäin olivat van Dyckin ja Tizianin omakuvat. Uudemmat taiteilijat suosivat enemmän oman aikansa tekijöitä ja ehkä kavereitaankin. Degas jopa palautti kokoelmaansa hankkimiaan teoksia jouduttuaan riitoihin tekijöiden kanssa. Suosituimpia keräyskohteita olivat Delacroixin lisäksi Corot, Monet, Cézanne, Manet, Picasso ja ehdottomasti Gauguin. Oli upeaa nähdä Matissen hankinta Gauguinin miehestä kukka korvan takana ja Degasin kokoelmista ihana kukkamaljakko. Jotkut taiteilijat tutkivat ja kopioivatkin hankkimiensa tekijöiden perspektiiveja, värejä, maisemia, valaistuksia tai aiheita. Mutta Freud oli kiinnostunut tekstuureista ja siveltimenkäytöstä, mikä näkyy hyvin kun vertaa Cézannen ja Freudin alastomia naisia. Nykyisin esikuvia ja malleja voi helposti löytää Internetistä ja kirjoista, mutta ihan erilaista on tietenkin nähdä teos oikeassa koossa, tutkia sitä eri valaistuksissa, nähdä kaikki siveltimenjäljet ja mhadolliset virheetkin ihan läheltä.

Five days in the sweltering London - luckily there is air conditioning in the museums! The first target was National Gallery's exhibition Painters' Paintings. Just a fine idea for this exhibition: paintings acquired by some chosen painters (Lucian Freud, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, Frederick Lord Leighton, George Frederick Watts, Sir Thomas Reynolds and Anthony van Dyck). It was interesting to see, what kind of artists each of these painters had bought into their own collection, and did these acquisitions reflect somehow in their own style. The older painters favored classic art and Renaissance, the most popular seemed to be Tizian and from Delacroix. These idols influenced even in the self portraits, which was clear when you saw Tizian's and van Dyck's self portraits side by side. The younger artists favored more their contemporaries and maybe even friends. Degas even returned some of his acquisitions after quarreling with them. The most popular targets of collections were in addition to Delacroix: Corot, Manet, Cézanne, Monet, Picasso, and definitely Gauguin. It was magnificent to see Matisse's purchase of Gauguin's Man with a Flower Behind His Ear and Vase of Flowers from Degas' collection. Some artists clearly examined and even copied the perspectives, colours, landscapes, lights and subjects of the paintings they bought. But Freud was interested in textures and brush strokes, which is visible when you compare Cézanne's and Freud's naked women. Nowadays it's easy to explore your idols, styles and models in the Internet and books, but it is of course quite different to see the painting in it's actual size, explore it in different lights and angles, see all the brush strokes and even possible faults very near.
