Van Eyck And the Pre-Raphaelites - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Jan Van Eyckin (1390-1441) Arnolfini-muotokuva on yksi Lontoon National Galleryn tunnetuimpia töitä.

Jan Van Eyck's (1390-1441) Arnolfini portrait is one of the most famous painting at The National Gallery in London. This painting is full of objects, and there has been a lot explaining of their symbols. The most intriguing is still the mirror behind the couple, where also the painter himself is reflected. Now there is a really interesting exhibition at The National Gallery about this mirror  and how it inspired the Pre-Raphaelites and other artists at the end of the 1800's when this painting by Van Eyck was purchased by the National Gallery. The mirror suits fine to the symbolic imagery preferred by the Pre-Raphaelites, in its way the mirror can like be telling stories of an another parallel and secret world. There was a model of an round convex mirror on the wall at the exhibition, so you could observe your own mirror image.

BEYOND CARAVAGGIO - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Lontoon National Galleryn näyttely Beyond Caravaggio (Caravaggion seuraajat) on tosi tumma.

*********
The Exhibition Beyond Caravaggio in National Gallery in London is really dark. There is only just a trifle of light in the paintings, some moon beams, evening glow, lantern or candle. The light is there for the highlighting of usually strong facial expressions, contorted postures, threatening situations or glamour of the saints. There are only a few of Caravaggio's works in the exhibition, and it is actually hard to separate the "real" Caravaggios from the style of his followers from the 1600's. And the influence of Caravaggio spans even further. I think I saw in these dark paintings the same nuances than in Film Noir-movies, colour photography or in the pomposity of Art Deco style.

PAINTERS' PAINTINGS - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Viisi päivää helteisessä Lontoossa - onneksi museoissa on ilmastointi! Ensimmäinen kohde oli National Galleryn näyttely Painters' Paintings. Hieno idea näyttelylle: valittujen muutaman taiteilijan  (Lucian Freud, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, Frederick Lord Leighton, George Frederick Watts, Sir Thomas Reynolds ja Anthony van Dyck) itselleen hankkimat taulut.

Paul Gauguin
Five days in the sweltering London - luckily there is air conditioning in the museums! The first target was National Gallery's exhibition Painters' Paintings. Just a fine idea for this exhibition: paintings acquired by some chosen painters (Lucian Freud, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, Frederick Lord Leighton, George Frederick Watts, Sir Thomas Reynolds and Anthony van Dyck). It was interesting to see, what kind of artists each of these painters had bought into their own collection, and did these acquisitions reflect somehow in their own style. The older painters favored classic art and Renaissance, the most popular seemed to be Tizian and from Delacroix. These idols influenced even in the self portraits, which was clear when you saw Tizian's and van Dyck's self portraits side by side. The younger artists favored more their contemporaries and maybe even friends. Degas even returned some of his acquisitions after quarreling with them. The most popular targets of collections were in addition to Delacroix: Corot, Manet, Cézanne, Monet, Picasso, and definitely Gauguin. It was magnificent to see Matisse's purchase of Gauguin's Man with a Flower Behind His Ear and Vase of Flowers from Degas' collection. Some artists clearly examined and even copied the perspectives, colours, landscapes, lights and subjects of the paintings they bought. But Freud was interested in textures and brush strokes, which is visible when you compare Cézanne's and Freud's naked women. Nowadays it's easy to explore your idols, styles and models in the Internet and books, but it is of course quite different to see the painting in it's actual size, explore it in different lights and angles, see all the brush strokes and even possible faults very near.
