BEYOND CARAVAGGIO - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Lontoon National Galleryn näyttely Beyond Caravaggio (Caravaggion seuraajat) on tosi tumma. Maalauksissa on valoa niukasti, vain jokunen kuunsäde, illankajo, lyhty tai kynttilä. Valolla korostettiin usein voimakkaita ilmeitä, vääntyneitä asentoja, uhkaavia tilanteita tai pyhimysten hohtoa. Näyttelyssä on vain muutama Caravaggion työ, ja 1600-luvun seuraajien töitä on aika vaikea erottaa "aidoista" Caravaggioista. Ja Caravaggion vaikutus ulottuu 1600-lukua kauemmaksikin. Olin näkevinäni näissä tummissa maalauksissa samoja sävyjä kuin vaikkapa Film Noir-tyyppisissä elokuvissa, värivalokuvauksessa tai Art Deco-tyylisuunnan mahtipontisuudessa.

The Exhibition Beyond Caravaggio in National Gallery in London is really dark. There is only just a trifle of light in the paintings, some moon beams, evening glow, lantern or candle. The light is there for the highlighting of usually strong facial expressions, contorted postures, threatening situations or glamour of the saints. There are only a few of Caravaggio's works in the exhibition, and it is actually hard to separate the "real" Caravaggios from the style of his followers from the 1600's. And the influence of Caravaggio spans even further. I think I saw in these dark paintings the same nuances than in Film Noir-movies, colour photography or in the pomposity of Art Deco style.
