WILLIAM MORRIS - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Arts and Crafts -tyylisuunnan suurena ihailijana odotukset olivat isot kun astuin Lontoon National Portrait Galleryn näyttelyyn "Anarchy & Beauty. William Morris and his legacy 1860-1960". Näyttely esitteli William Morrisin (1834-1896) ympärille muodostunutta taiteilijoiden ja käsityöläisten liikettä. Ja olihan näyttelyssä muutama hieno huonekalu, keramiikkaesine ja koru, mutta niitä olisi voinut olla enemmänkin. Ehkä näyttelyn paikka oli järjestäjille hieman hankala: mukana oli liikaa Arts and Crafts -liikkeessä toimineiden henkilöiden kuvia, useimmiten partaisia miehiä. Tekstiä oli paljon ja näyttelyssä olisi voinut paneutua aika syvällisesti Arts and Crafts -liikkeen poliittisiin ja muihinkin manifesteihin, kiltaperinteen herättämiseen ja sen tuhoutumiseen omaan mahdottomuuteensa. Voi vain ihailla käsityön arvostusta ja liikkeessä toimineiden uskoa, että tavallinenkin ihminen haluaa ja voi sisustaa kotinsa kauniilla käsintehdyillä huonekaluilla, esineillä ja tekstiileillä. Näyttelyn lopun venytys William Morrisin perinnöstä aina 1960-luvun Terence Conraniin tuntuu suomalaisesta aika keinotekoiselta.

As a big admirer of Arts and Crafts movement my expectations were high in London when I entered National Portrait Gallery`s exhibition  "Anarchy & Beauty. William Morris and his legacy 1860-1960". This exhibition displayed the art movement which developed around William Morris (1834-1896). And there were some fine furniture, ceramics and pieces of jewelry, but there could have been much more. Perhaps the location for this exhibition in National Portrait gallery was a bit difficult for the organizers: there were far too many portraits of the members of Arts and Craft movement, often bearded men. There was a lot of text, and you could focus thoroughly on Arts and Crafts movement' s political and other manifests, evoking of the guild tradition and it' s distraction of it´s own absurdity. I can only admire the appreciation of handicraft and Arts and Crafts movement' s belief, that even common people wanted and could decorate their home with beautiful handmade furniture, objects and textiles.The end of the exhibition stretched William Morris´ Legacy even to 1960`s and Terence Conran, a bit artificial thinking in my Finnish mind.
