Miten herkullinen hunajan väri! Kortin nimi onkin "Honey" ja sen ottanut ranskalainen Bruno Maso.

What a delicious honey colour! The name of this card is rightly "Honey" and the photographer is French Bruno Maso.

TALVI JAPAN TERASSILTA / WINTER FROM JAPA`S TERRACE

Talvi oli tänä vuonna lyhyt, vain pari viikkoa riitti kunnolla lunta. Piti siis käyttää hiukan mielikuvitusta ja muistikuvia kun tein tämän pastellipiirroksen ystäväni Japan terassinäkymästä talvella. Kuvaan on  vedostettu myös pieni linoleikkaus kahdesta kissasta. Kirkkaiden hankien kimmellystä terästin lisäämällä pariin kohtaan hopeanväristä kimmellystä. Tätä voisi kai kutsua sekatekniikaksi. Olen tehnyt aiemmin  pastellipiirroksia & linoleikkauksia myös keväästä, kesästä ja syksystä Japan terassilta. 

The Winter was short this year, only a couple of weeks of real snow. I had to use some imagination and recollection when I made this pastel drawing about the winter scene from my friend Japa´s terrace. There is also a small linocut of two cats in this picture. I laced the shimmer of bright snow by adding some silvery glitter to the picture. Perhaps this might be called mixed media. I have also made earlier pastel drawings & linocuts of the spring, summer and autumn from Japa´s terrace.

Tämä on yksi englantilaisen Richard Bawdenin kissakorteista laatikostani. Ihailen tässä erityisesti linoleikkauksen tekniikkaa. Kuvassa on monenlaisia kuvioita, kasvien lehtiä ja piikikkäitä varsia - jakkaran pallojalat käpälineen ovat hienot. Kissa tuntuu silti aika surumieliseltä, ehkä tämä johtuu myrkynvihreästä väristä. Tässä linoleikkauksessa on varmaan kuva vedostettu kahdesta eri linoleikkauksesta - tausta ja kissa eri väreillä.

This is one of English Richard Bawden`s cat cards from my box. I admire here especially the technique of  linocutting. There are many patterns in this picture, leaves of the plants and thorny stems - the claws on the legs of the stool are fine. Still, the cat seems to be a bit melancholy, perhaps because of the poison  green colour. In this linocut the picture is surely pulled from two different linocut - the cat and the background in different colours.

Tässä linoleikkauksessa kissa kuuntelee toinen silmä auki vanhaa gramofonia. Mieheni Timo alkoi kirjoittaa minulle pieniä satuja tai tarinoita, osa vanhoihin kansansatuihin pohjautuvia. Mikä loputon aiheiden aarreaitta! Tämä kuva liittyy tarinaan kissasta, jota jatkuva gramofonimusiikki ärsytti. Soitin on nimeltään His Master´s Voice - Isännän Ääni, mutta kissallahan ei ole isäntää

In this linocut a cat listens an old gramophone with the other eye open. My husband Timo started to write for me short fairy tales or stories, some of them based on old folk tales. What a bottomless treasure chest! This picture is associated with a story of a cat, who was irritated by the constant playing of the gramophone music. The gramophone is called His Master´s Voice, but this cat has no masters.

Neill Menneerin kissakortti on vuodelta 1986 ja sen nimi on "Cats and Dogs Agency, Essex". Valkoinen kissa näyttää makaavan kissa- ja koirahoitolan ulkopuolella, ikkunan edessä. Kuva on aika sekava ja kuvastaa hyvin 80-luvun levotonta värikylläisyyttä.

Neill Menneer´s cat card is from 1986 and it´s name is "Cats and Dogs Agency, Essex". The white cat is lying outside Cat and Dog Agency, in front of a window. The picture is rather incoherent and captures finely the restless saturation of the 1980`s.

LISKO / LIZARD

Metsälammessa asuvat pienet liskot ovat joskus jopa onnistuneet pelottamaan minua. Melkein mustasta vedestä nousee äkkiä elävä olento. Lieneekö tämä linoleikkaukseni lisko joku ihan uusi laji. Kuva on vedostettu tumman sinivihreänä. Kuvan nimi on suomalaista runoa mukaillen "Kosteasta kolostaan nous´ lisko puuhun  laulamaan".

Small lizards living in the forest pond have sometimes even succeeded in startling me. Suddenly a creature is rising from an almost black water. This lizard in my linocut might be a totally new  species. The picture was pulled dark bluish-green. The name of the picture is after a Finnish poem: "Out of the damp hole rose a lizard. It ran up into a tree - and sang".

"Saapasjalkakissan sunnuntai"-kortti on painokuva Reetta Isotupa-Siltasen kollaasista. Siinä on makeat pastellisävyt ja hennot kuvioinnit. Isotupa-Siltanen myy korttejaan ja printtejään Joutomaa-kaupassaan ja pitää omaa hauskaa Joutomaassa-blogiaan. Blogissa ilmoitetaan tänään 10.3.2014, millä neljällä paikkakunnalla Suomen Käsityöyrittäjät järjestävät tulevan kesän aikana Käsityökorttelikiertueen.

"Puss in Boot Sunday" card is printed from Reetta Isotupa-Siltanen´s collage. In this picture the pastel colours are sweet and the patterns delicate.  Isotupa-Siltanen sells her cards and prints in her shop Joutomaa (Wasteland) and she has a fun Joutomaassa (In the Wasteland) blog. In this blog there will be today March 10th the announcement of four places where Suomen Käsityöyrittäjät (Finnish Handicraft Entrepreneurs) will organize their road show this summer.

ANDY WARHOL - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Andy Warhol: Vesuvius

Tämä on ihme: Andy Warholin (1928-1987) taidetta näyttelyssä Tampereella! Sara Hildénin taidemuseossa tuntuu kuin olisi isommassakin kaupungissa. Näyttely sopii hienosti vaaleaan ja avaraan museoon. Lisäksi tämä näyttely on hyvä ja se kertoo hienosti Andy Warholin tuotannon keskeiset asiat. Warholin omakuvat olivat nykyisten kännykällää otettujen selfie-kuvien sukulaisia, jokainen voi olla pääosassa ainakin yhden selfien ajan. Omakuvat transvestiittina ovat koskettavia. Warholin eniten käyttämä tekniikka oli silkkipaino eli serigrafia, ja tulokset olivat upeita, suuria ja värit loistavia. Valokuva suurennettiin ensin isoksi ja Warhol päätti akryyliväreillä kuvaan tulevat värit, apulaiset hoitivat sarjojen painatukset. Toiminnassa oli Warholin Tehdas (Factory). Julkkiksista ja aikansa kuuluisuuksista (Marilyn Monroe, Mao Tse-tung) tehdyt kuvat ovat tunnetuimpia. Tässä näyttelyssä on myös komea sarja Mick Jaggeria. Factoryn ns. screen testit (tilaan tulleiden henkilöiden äänettömät muutaman minuutin videot) ovat mielenkiintoisia. Eniten koskettivat tuntemattomammat Warholin työt, esimerkiksi pari Vesuvius-tulivuoren kuvaa - väri todella muuttaa tunnelman. Joissakin töissä oli jännittävää tehostetta: hopeakidettä. 

Andy Warhol : Mick Jagger

This is a miracle: Andy Warhol´s (1928-1987) art in an exhibition in Tampere! In Sara Hildén´s Art Museum you almost feel like living in a bigger city. The exhibition is well suited for the light and spacious museum. In addition this exhibition is a great one and  it tells finely the key issues of Andy Warhol´s art. Warhol´s self-portraits are related to current selfie-photos taken with portable phones, everybody can be the main character for one photo. Self-portraits as a transvestite are gripping. Warhol´s most used technique was screen print or serigraphy, and the results were gorgeous, big and the colours brilliant. A photography was firstly enlarged and Warhol then decided with acrylic the colours for the picture, and the assistants printed the series. This was really Warhol´s Factory in operation. Pictures of celebrities and famous people of their time (Marilyn Monroe, Mao Tse-tung) are the most familiar. In this exhibition there is also a handsome series of Mick Jagger. Factory´s screen tests (short videos of people entering the space) are interesting. I was mostly moved by the more unfamiliar works, for example a couple of screen prints of Vesuvius volcano - colour really changes the feeling. In some of the paintings there was exciting effect: silver crystals.

LOW-TECH PRINT - KIRJA / BOOK

Caspar Williamsonin kokoama kirja "Low-Tech Print. Contemporary Hand-Made Printing" on kiinnostavaa luettavaa. Paitsi että kirja on fyysisenä kappaleena todella kaunis, se on täynnä tietoa hienon kuvituksen lisäksi. Matalan teknologian painotekniikoilla tarkoitetaan tässä sellaisia paino- tai vedostustapoja, joissa ei tarvita kovin kummoisia teknisiä laitteita tai joita voidaan tehdä kokonaan käsityönä. Tällainen matala teknologia on ehkä nousemassa arvostetummaksi taiteenlajiksi kun kaikenlaisen muunkin downshiftaus yleistyy. Kirjan eri luvuissa esitellään tekijöiden ja tuotosten lisäksi tekotapoja neljässä eri luvussa:
- silkkipaino
- kohopaino (painokone)
- kohopaino (menetelmä: puupiirros, linoleikkaus)
- muut painomenetelmät.

Laura Seaby

Minua kiinnosti tietenkin eniten kohopainomenetelmä ja linoleikkaus. Tekijöitä tai erilaisia ryhmiä eri puolilta maailmaa tuntuu yhdistävän mielikuvituksellisuus ja omistautuminen hitaalle työtavalle, ja lopullisessa tuloksessa työn jälki saa näkyä. Englantilainen Stanley Donwood on tehnyt peräti 5,5 metriä pitkän puupiirroksen useassa osassa, aiheena Los Angelesin tuhoutuminen (sarjassa Lost Cities / kadonneet kaupungit). Laura Seabyn kolmevärinen lino Snug on mestarillinen. Tugboat Printshop USA:sta on yhdistänyt eri osista vanerille tehdyn piirroksen Big, Bad Wolf / Iso paha susi. 
Luku muiden painovälineiden käytöstä on riemastuttava. Olisipa mielenkiintoista nähdä Gucco-laite toiminnassa. Jotkut tekevät grafiikkaa jopa Lego-palikoilla.

Tugboat Printshop

"Low-Tech Print. Contemporary Printing" - a book compiled by Caspar Williamson is fascinating reading. It´s not only a physically beautiful book, it is also full of knowledge in addition to fine pictures.  Low-tech means here such printing techniques which do not require very sophisticated machines or which you can even make totally by hand. Perhaps this kind of low-tech is rising to a more valued art form when other kind of down sifting is increasing. The book demonstrates the makers and also the ways to work in for chapters:
- Screen Printing
- Letterpress
- Relief Printing.
Of course I was interested most about relief printing and linoprinting. Imaginative and devotion to a slow way of working seems to combine the artists and different groups around the world, and the markings of the workmanship are allowed to be seen. English Stanley Donwood has made over 5,5 m long woodcut in several parts, the subject is the destruction of Los Angeles ( in the series: Lost Cities). Laura Seaby´s three-colour linocut Snug is masterly. Tugboat Printshop from USA has combined at least two woodcuts in plywood in the picture "Big, Bad Wolf".
The chapter of other printing methods is hilarious. It would surely be interesting to see Gucco printing devise in action. Some artists even make graphics with Lego blocks.

PERHONEN / BUTTERFLY

Tämä on neljäs linoleikkaus sarjaa "Kissa joka uskoi olevansa..." Nyt linon nimenä on "Kissa joka uskoi olevansa perhonen". Kissa lentää korkealla peltojen yllä. Peltojen erilaisia kuvioita oli tosi kiva kaivertaa. Nyt tämä sarja saa riittää, ainakin toistaiseksi.

This linocut is the fourth in the series "Cat who thought to be..." Now the name of the lino is "Cat Who Thought She Was Butterfly": The cat is flying high over the fields. It was really nice to carve the many patterns of the fields.

Lontoon Portobello Roadilta vuodelta 1985 on ostettu aika monta Michael Weigallin kissakorttia. Hän puki mustavalkoisen Merlin-kissansa eri maiden ja aikakausien vaatteisiin, ja kissa tuntuu suostuneen poseeraamaan. Tässä "Kissa Espanjassa"-valokuvassa Merlin kyllä näyttää olevan jo lähdössä muihin puuhiin.

From London´s Portobello Road in 1985  I bought quite a few Michael Weigall´s cat cards. Weigall has photographed his cat Merlin dressed and staged in clothes from different countries and periods. The black and white cat seems to have agreed to such a thing quite peacefully. But in this photograph "Cat in Spain" Merlin seems to be ready to change the scene.

KAROLIINA PAAPPA - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

"Kyyhkysistä ja tiikereistä" on Karoliina Paapan (s. 1983) pienen valokuvanäyttelyn nimi Taidehalli TR1:ssä Tampereella. Kuvien tunnelma on herkkä, satumainen ja värit ovat herkullisia. Kuvat on otettu kuin ne olisivat kohtauksia näytelmästä tai vanhoja jäykkiä muotokuvia. Kuvia on käsitelty digitaalisesti ja niihin on lisätty kiiltokuvia, sekä ihmisiä että eläimiä tai kukkasia.

"About Doves and Tigers" is the name of Karoliina Paappa´s (b. 1983) small exhibition of photographs in Art Museum TR1 in Tampere. The mood of these photographs is tender, like in fairy-tales and the colours are delicious. The pictures have been taken like they were scenes in a play or old rigid portraits. The photographs have been digitally processed and old luster images have been added, both people and animals or flowers.

Hieno kuvaus Karoliina Paapan työskentelytavasta ja valokuvien teosta on hänen kotisivullaan. Minuun tietenkin vetosi tämä alla oleva kissa.
