ART PISPALAN OVENPIELI / NEXT TO THE DOOR AT ART PISPALA

 Art Pispala - kehystämö/gallerian ovenpielessä on nyt kaksi linopiirrostani: korkea ja kapea kuumailmapallo Pispalan harjun yllä sekä Pispalan haulitorni. Töiden vieressä olevasta ikkunasta melkein näkyy haulitorni ja harju kohoaa gallerian takana, jossa portaat ylös ovat todellinen kuntokoe.

Next to the door at gallery Art Pispala there are now two of my linocuts: a high and narrow on with a hot air balloon over the Pispala ridge and one linocut of Pispala shot tower. From the window by these works you can almost see the shot tower, and the ridge is rising behind the gallery, where the steps are a real fitness test.

Hollantilais-belgialaisen romantikon Henrietta Ronnerin (1821-1909) joulukuva on vuodelta 1905: A Happy Mother (Onnellinen äiti). En tiedä, onko äitikissan ilme nyt niin onnellinen, enemmänkin huolestunut. Ja miksei olisi? Neljä villiä kissanpoikaa telmii ympärillä. Kuva on pehmeä ruskean värin ylistys, kuin sulaa suklaata joulun kunniaksi.

This Christmas picture from 1905 is painted by Dutch-Belgian Romantic artist  Henrietta Ronneri (1821-1909) and it´s called A Happy Mother. I´m nor sure if mother cat´s expression is just happy, more like worried. And why not? Four wild kittens are tumbling around. The picture is a soft praise of the colour brown, like melted chocolate in honor of Christmas. 

MAAMERKKIEN VEDOSTUSTA / PRINTING LANDMARKS

Aloitin vedostaa neliosaista linopiirrosta, jossa yläosa on uusi ja siinä näkyy monia Pispalan maamerkkejä. Kun teippasin osat yhteen, vanhat alaosat olivat tummia edellisen vedostuksen jälkeen ja uudet vaaleita koskemattomia. Uuden musteen levittäminen vaaleille linolevyille on hieno tunne, musteen ja telan ääni on  kiehtova. Nyt koko linopiirros on tumma. Seuraavaksi paperia!

I started to print my four-part linocut, where the upper part is new and there are many of Pispala`s landmarks. When I taped to part together, the older bottom parts were darker after previous printing and the new ones were light. Spreading new ink on lighter lino plates is a fine feeling. the sound of the ink and roll is fascinating. Now the whole linocut is dark. Next the paper!

NELIÖ-GALLERIA

Oulussa Neliö-Galleriassa loppuu naivistinen yhteisnäyttely sunnuntaina 13.3.2022. Kaleva-sanomalehdessä oli hieno arvio näyttelystä. Tosi harvinaista herkkua on tällainen lehtiarvostelu, sillä yleisesti sanomalehdet ovat jokseenkin kokonaan lopettaneet taidenäyttelyissä käynnin. Miksi? Pienemmistä näyttelyistä tiedon saanti on murusina internetissä, aina ei ehdi ja näyttelyt saattavat mennä ohi, harmi.

A Naïve art group exhibition at Gallery Neliö in Oulu is ending on Sunday March,13,2022. There was a fine article in the newspaper Kaleva. This is really rare delight, article like this, because the newspapers have more or less completely stopped to publish visiting art exhibitions. Why? You have to gather information of especially smaller art exhibitions like in small crumbs in the Internet, sometimes you don´t have time and exhibitions have already ended, what a pity!

HANNU RIIKONEN / IITTALA

 Naivismin talvi -näyttely eli Naivistit Iittalassa -talvinäyttely päättyy sunnuntaina 13.3.2022. Korona on kurittanut kävijämääriä, mutta viime viikonvaihteessa riitti vilskettä Taiteilijapäivänä. Kuulin erinomaisen ja mielenkiintoisen haastattelun kun näyttelyn kuraattori Veikko Halmetoja keskusteli Hannu Riikosen kanssa hänen taiteestaan. Riikonen on tamperelainen ja ollut opettajana teknillisessä oppilaitoksessa koko taiteilijanuransa ajan. Taloudellisia pakotteita tehdä "myyvää" taidetta Riikosella siis ei ole ollut. Hän on seurannut eri suuntauksia ja käyttänyt eri tekniikoita omien mieltymystensä mukaan. Hienosti Riikonen kuvasi alun pop-taiteen vaikutukset, isojen ehkä eniten naivististen veistostensa synnyn, seinillä Iittalassa olevien maalausten taustat Jyväskylän yöelämän innoituksesta alkaen ja nykyisten reliefimäisten töidensä teon. Nostan hattua!

Naivismin talvi -näyttelyssä on Hannu Riikosen maalausten lisäksi Stefan Bremerin valokuvia,  Suvi Vasaman paperiveistoksia ja kokoelma ns. nykynaivistien töitä. Itselläni on seinällä kolme linopiirros/pastellityötä, joista yksi oli saanut punaisen täplän/ myyty. Kaksi muuta ovat vielä naivistisessa taidelainaamossa.

Naïve Art Winter exhibition or Naïve Artists in Iittala winter exhibition is ending on Sunday March, 13, 2022. The pandemic has reduced the number of visitors, but last Sunday there was a bustling feeling at the Artists` Day. I heard an excellent and interesting interview when the curator of the exhibition Veikko Halmetoja talked with Hannu Riikonen about his art. Riikonen lives in Tampere and he has been teaching at the technical school during his whole artistic career. So there has not been no financial sanctions to make "selling" art. He has followed different art trends and techniques after his own preferences. How finely Riikonen described his early orientation to pop art, how his large perhaps most Naïve sculptures were made, the backgrounds of the paintings on the walls starting with the night life in Jyväskylä, and the making of his recent relief-like works. Hats off!

In addition to Hannu Riikonen´s paintings there are at the Naïve Art Winter exhibition also Stefan Bremer`s photograps, Suvi Vasama´s paper sculpture and so calaled modern Naïve artists works. I have three linocut & pastels on the wall, and one of them had got a red dot/sold. The two others are still in the Naïve Art Loan Service.

Jerzy Marek (1925-2014) syntyi Puolassa, mutta muutti Lontooseen jo vuonna 1948 palveltuaan toisen maailmansodan aikana brittiarmeijassa. Hänen maalauksissaan oli usein eläimiä, etenkin kissoja kuten tässä. Kaksi kissaa poseeraa lattialla. Pöydällä on lasikuvun alla asetelma lintuja ja pöydän molemmilla puolilla seisoo pilari palmuineen. Kuvassa on paljon toistuvia teemoja: sammaleenvihreä väri, pyöreät pehmeät muodot taustan ja lasikuvun kukkuloissa, verhoissa, pöydässä ja pylväissä sekä lehtiaiheet palmuissa, lasikuvun sisällä ja tapetissa. Maalauksen nimi on "Wishing" / "Toivoen", tarkoittaneeko sitä että taiteilija haluasi olla maalauksen maisemassa vai että kissa haluaisi saada linnun lasikuvusta.  Marek on ehdottomasti yksi lempinaivisteistani.

 Jerzy Marek (1925-2014) was born in Poland but he moved to London in 1948 after serving in the British Army during WWII. There are often animals in his paintings, especially cats like here. Two cats are posing on the floor. There is a still life with birds under a glass dome on the table and on the both sides of the table stands a pillar with a potted palm. There are a lot of repeating themes in the picture: The moss green colour, round soft shapes like the the hills in the background and in the glass dome, curtains, table and pillars and also the leaf motifs in the palms, inside the dome and on the wallpaper. The name of the painting is "Wishing" meaning perhaps that the artist would like to be in the landscape of the painting or that the cat would like to catch on of the birds under the glass dome. Marek is definitely one of my favorite Naïve artists.

PISPALAN MAAMERKIT / PISPALA LANDMARKS

 

Kaksi A4-kokoista uutta palasta neliosaiseen linopiirrokseen Pispalan harjusta on kaiverrettu. Näistä löytyvät jokseenkin kaikki Pispalan ja Pyynikin tärkeimmät maamerkit: Pispalan haulitorni, Pispalan koulu, Näsinneula, Siilinkari, Pyynikin näkötorni ja vanha hyppyrimäki Hoppa, joka on jo purettu sekä Pispalan portaita ja taloja sikin sokin. Aikomukseni on värittää haulitorni punaiseksi ja näkötornin juurella olevat kaksi autoa vihreäksi tai siniseksi sekä keltaiseksi.

Two new A4 sized pieces for my four-part linocut of Pispala ridge are now carved. In these two there are almost all of the main landmarks of Pispala: Pispala shot tower, Pispala school, Näsinneula, Siilinkari, Pyynikki observation tower and the old jumping hill Hoppa, which is already demolished and also Pispalan stairs and houses topsy-turvy. I will colour by hand the shot tower red and two cars by the observation tower blue or green and yellow. 

SIRKUSVÄKEÄ - NÄYTTELY / CIRCUS PEOPLE - EXHIBITION

Nytkö alkaa taas näyttelyissä käynti pandemian hellittäessä? Se olisi ihanaa. Ainakin poikettiin jo Kangasalla Kimmo Pyykkö museossa, jossa oli hurmaava näyttely "Sirkusväkeä". Näyttely on monipuolinen, aikajana 1900-luvun alusta tähän päivään ja erilaisia taidesuuntauksia on hauska kokea rinnakkain aina naivismiin asti. Esillä on maalauksien lisäksi grafiikkaa,veistoksia ja tekstiilitaidettakin. Kokemus on jotenkin intiimi, sirkusaihe käsittelee usein tunteita, surumielisyyttä, pelkoa ja rohkeutta. Ja väriä riittää.

Is now again time to visit exhibitions when the pandemic eases. That would be wonderful! At least we stopped in Kangasala at Kimmo Pyykkö Museum. where there is a fascinating exhibition " Circus People". The exhibition is really comprehensive, the time line is from the beginning of the 1900´s to today and different art styles are nice to explore side by side all the way to even Naïve Art. There are exhibited in addition to paintings also graphics, sculptures and textile art. The experience is somehow intimate, circus art is often addressing issues like feelings, sadness, courage and fear. And there is a lot of colour.

SININEN JA KELTAINEN / BLUE AND YELLOW

 Kaivertelin välillä linoaurinkoa. Linolevy on sininen ja paperi alla keltainen. Mitä mielessä pyörii näinä päivinä? Ukraina ja rauhan kaipuu! Kaiverrusroskasta syntyi rauhanmerkki.

I carved a sun for a change. The lino plate is blue and the paper under it yellow. What has been in my mind recently? Ukraine and a longing for peace! The cutting scraps formed themselves as a piece sign.

KISSA NURMIKOLLA / CAT ON THE LAWN

Kaivertelen kahta uutta A4-kokoista yläosaa neljäosaiseen linopiirrokseen Pispalan harjusta. Portaiden väliin nurmikolle käpertyi kissa nukkumaan. Tämä ehkä on jonkinlainen omakuva, vain 4 cm leveä.

I´m carving two A4 sized parts to my 4-part linocut of Pispala ridge. Between the stairs on the grass a cat curled for a sleep. Perhaps this is some kind of a self portrait, only 4 cm wide.
