Minna Mäkipään kuvituksessa kaksi kissaa tekee sirkustemppua. Mukana lentelevät sirkuksen kyyhkysetkin. Värit ovat kirkkaat ja kissojen jumppahousut hilpeät. Mutta ovatkohan nämä oikeasti kissoja, sillä kädet ja jalat ovat kuin ihmisellä?

Two cats are performing a circus trick in this illustration by Minna Mäkipää. Even the circus doves are flying around. The colours are bright and the cats' jump pants are hilarious. But are these really cats for their feet and hands are like human's. 

PICASSO -KISSA / CAT

Taas putkahti uusi versio taiteilijakissasta. Nyt kissa uneksii olevansa Picasso. Lisäsin linoleikkaukseen taiteilijakisasta pastellipiirrokseen Picasson seksikkäästä naisen muotokuvasta (Marie Thèrése Walter).

And again there is a new version of the cat artist. Now the cat dreams he is Picasso. I added to the linocut a pastel drawing of Picasso's portrait of a sexy woman (Marie Thèrése Walter).

TÄÄLTÄ TULLAAN - NÄYTTELY / HERE WE COME - EXHIBITION

Tampereen taidemuseon näyttelyssä naistaiteilijoista modernismin kynnyksellä on monta helmeä, herkkiä ja rohkeita tulkintoja arkipäivän ihmeistä. Ison joukon muotokuvia ohitin nopeasti, mutta sitten pysähdyin ainakin näiden kohdalla. Greta Hällfors-Sipilän (1899-1974) maalaukset ihastuttivat väreillään, perspektiiveillään, punaisilla poskillaan ja aiheillaan, eräänkin työn nimi on "Saman päivän iltana Tivan ja Hallen luona Björn ja Fagi laulavat gluntteja" - taiteilijaelämää siis. Eva Törnvall-Collinkin (1896-1982) sai aiheensa kotoa, kissoista ja puistoista. Tuulikki Pietilän (1917-2009) mustepiirros surmanajajista sai pään pyörimään. Ja nämä kaikki olivat samassa huoneessa. Muissa saleissa oli myös katsottavaa, pari hyvää Helene Schjerfbeckiä, Ellen Thesleffiä ja jopa Ina Collianderin linopiirroksia.

There are many fine pearls in Tampere Art Museum's exhibition of women artists in the early Modernism, gentle and brave interpretations of the wonders of the everyday life. I passed quite a large number of portraits, but then I stopped at least in this room. Greta Hällfors-Sipilä's (1899-1974) paintings delighted with their colours, perspectives, red cheeks and their subjects, one of the paintings was called "In the Evening of the Same Day in the House of Tiva and Halle Björn and Fagi sing duets" - that's artist's life. Eva Törnvall-Collin (1896-1982) took her subjects fron her home, cats and parks. Tuulikki Pietilä's (1917-2009) ink drawing of wall of death riders makes your head spin. And all these are in the same room. In other halls there is a lot to see, couple fine Helene Schjerfbecks, Ellen Thesleffs, and even Ina Colliander's linocuts.

Galleria Saskian näyttely yllättää jälleen. Kahdessa huoneessa on Rose-Mari Torpon (s. 1977) ja Taira Tigerin (s. 1970) suurikokoisia abstrakteja värisommitelmia, joista voi aavistella inspiraatioita luonnosta, kukista ja metsistä. Mutta viimeinen huone onkin erilainen: Sebastian Lindbergin (s. 1978) hyvin realistisen tuntuisia tutkielmia ladon seinästä, joista, purojen välkkyvistä vesistä ja metsänreunoista. Värit ovat kuitenkin melko räikeitä, ihmisiä ei näy, jonkinlainen uhkaava hiukan scifimäinen tunnelma näissä. maalauksissa on.

Sebastian Lindberg

Gallery Saskia's exhibition surprises again. Two rooms are filled with Rose-Mari Torpo's (b. 1977) and Taira Tiger's (b. 1970) large abstract colour compositions. You can sense some inspiration of nature, flowers and forest. But the last room is something quite different: Sebastian Lindberg's (b. 1978) studies of old barns, rivers, edges of forest and the glimmer of water on ponds. The feeling is very realistic. Colours are still rather glaring, there are no humans, and somehow a bit threatening scifi-like atmosphere is prevailing.

Hualing Xun (s. 1975) sadunomainen maalaus Happy Day (Onnenpäivä) kuvaa ehkä yksinäisen suurisilmäisen tytön mielikuvituksellista syntymäpäivää. Kakussa on viisi kynttilää. Tytön seurana päivää juhlimassa ovat surusilmäiset ystävät: jänis, bambi ja kissa, joka on saanut kunnian ojentaa kakun. Taustan maisema on mukaelma Henry Rousseaun naivistista viidakkoa,

Hualing Xu's (b. 1975) fairy-tale painting Happy is perhaps depicting the imaginary birthday of a big-eyed girl. There are five candles on the cake. A hare, Bambi and cat, the sad-eyed friends are celebrating with the girl. The cat has the honorary position carrying the cake. The scenery at the background is like a variation of Henry Rousseau's naivist jungle. 

JARMO MÄKILÄ - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Jarmo Mäkilän (s. 1952) retrospektiivi Sara Hildénin taidemuseossa on hätkähdyttävä. Harvoin näkee yhden taiteilijan tuotannon näin selvinä ja toisistaan poikkeavina kausina - kuin kyseessä olisi useamman taiteilijan töitä. Mäkilän varhaisimmat työt ovat aluksi sosialistista realismia, sitten valokuvista tyyliteltyjä punk-aiheisia muotokuvia, sitten scifi-aiheita, sitten Rubensilta innoituksensa saaneita monumentaalisia akryylimaalauksia ja lopulta paluu öljymaalauksiin. Ehdottomasti eniten vetosivat maalaukset poikajoukosta. Pienet pojat seikkailevat metsässä, tapettu eläin roikkuu puussa, pojat istuvat koululuokassa presidenttien kuvat seinällä ja yksi poika häpeää nurkassa. Mitä mahtavat erikokoiset pojat tehdä leijallen tuolilla istuvan naamioon pukeutuneen aikuisen miehen ympärillä? Usein maalauksissa on vaarallisen näköisiä koiria, rummun soittajia, lasivitriinejä ja aavemaista valoa - muistumia lapsuudesta? Näin näitä poikajoukkojen kuvia kolme vuotta sitten Helsingissä galleria Forsblomissa, ja nyt ne asettuivat paremmin Mäkilän koko uraan. Kummalliset, välillä pelottavatkin identtiset pojat valkoisssa kauluspaidoissaan ovat kuin lauma: joku on aina johtajana, mutta taustalla on halu kuulua yhteen ja yksinäisyyden palko. Mäkilän käyttämät hyvin erilaiset tekniikat kaikissa hänen eri tyylisuunnissa ovat mestarilliset.

Jarmo Mäkilä's (b. 1952) retrospective in Sara Hildén Art Museum is startling. You can see very rarely the career of one artist in so separate phases diverging from each other - like it would be the case of works several artists. Mäkilä's earliest works are Socialist Realism, then punk-themes, often portraits painted from photographs, then scifi-themes, then gigantic acrylic paintings inspired by Rubens' paintings and finally the return to the oil painting. Definitely I was mostly drawn to the paintings of a group of boys. Small boys are venturing in the woods, a killed animal is hanging from the tree, the boys are sitting in a class room with president's pictures hanging on the wall, and one of the boys is standing ashamed in the corner. What ever are different sized boys doing hanging in the air around an adult man wearing a face mask? In the pictures here are often vicious looking dogs, boys playing drums, glass vitrines and spooky light - recollections of his childhood? I saw more of these paintings of boys three years ago at Gallery Forsblom in Helsinki, and now they are standing better in the whole career of Mäkilä. Strange, sometimes even scary identical boys in their white collared shirts are like herd, someone is always a leader, but in the background there is a desire to belong and fear of loneliness. The very different techniques used by Mäkilä during his separate genres are masterly.

Kolmas pieni (10 x 15 cm) linoleikkaus pispalalaisesta  talosta kuisteineen ja puuaitoineen on valmis. Lisäsin tähän pihalla kasvavia puita.

KAKSI HARAKKAA / TWO MAGPIES

Olen tehnyt aiemmin linoleikkauksistani monoprinttejä yhdistämällä linoleikkauksiin pastellipiirroksia, akryylivärejä tai mustetta. Nyt päätin kokeilla kuvalle taustan tekoa vedostamalla monotypian / monoprintin. Rajasin kuvan alueen maalarinteipillä muovilevylle, peitin kahden harakan alueet irrallisilla muovipalasilla ja levitin linoväriä levylle telalla ja siveltimellä. Halusin saada taustalla olevalle taivaalle lumisadetta, joten ruiskutun vettä pisaroina värin päälle. Irrotin reoilta maalarinteipit ja laitoin paperin värin päälle, painoin kuvaa puukauhalla jotta väri siirtyisi kunnolla paperille. Sitten irrotin harakoiden kohdalla olleet muovipalat ja vedostin kuvaan kaksi linoleikkausta harakasta. Lopuksi vielä korostin lumikiteitä valkoisella pastelliliidulla. Monotypian teko on hauskaa, hiukan sotkuista, mutta varmasti jatkan kokeilua isommissakin töissä.

I made earlier monoprints of my linocuts by combining pastel drawing, acrylics or ink with linocuts. Now I decided to try making a background for a picture by printing a monotype / monoprint. I cropped the area for the monoprint with masking tape on a piece of plastic, covered the areas for two magpie linocuts with two separate pieces of plastic, and applied lino colour with a roller and brush. I wanted to have some snow flakes on the sky in the background, so I sprayed some drops of water on the colour. I removed the masking tapes from the border, put a piece of paper on the colour and pressed the picture with a wooden spoon in order to transfer the colour on the paper. Then I removed the plastic pieces on the magpie places and printed two linocuts of magpies on the picture. Finally I highlighted some snow flakes with pastel. It is fun to make monotypes / monoprints, a bit messy, but surely I will continue my experiment even on larger works.

The first print, not enough texture on the sky without drops of water.

Toinen vedos, unohdin irrottaa reunateipit ja harakoiden teipit. Mutta huomasin,
että  linoleikkauksen voisi vedostaa monoprintin päällekin. /

The second print, I forgot to remove the masking tapes from the borders and on the
magpie places. But I found, that it is quite possible to print linocuts even on the monoprint.
