SÄIHKYVÄ AURINKO / SPARKLING SUN

 Kellahtavaksi väritetty linopiirroskala ui aallokossa. Taivaalla välkkyy aurinko oikeassa kulmassa ja veden pinnalta näkyy myrskyisiä aaltoja ja pieni vihreä saari. Tausta on tehty pastelliliiduilla. Tämä veden raja ja pinnan ylä- ja alapuolen saaminen samaan kuvaan olikin konstikasta. Aluksi luulin, että se onnistuisi vain tekemällä rajaan suoran viivan. Kuvan koko on 15 x 15 cm. Nimi "Aurinko, sinä olet säihkyvä ja tulinen!" on säe Katri Valan runosta.

A linocut fish, colored yellowish, swims in the waves. The sun is twinkling in the sky at the right corner and stormy waves and a small green island are visible on the water surface. The background is made with soft pastel chalks. Getting this water border and the top and bottom of the surface in the same image was tricky. At first I thought it would be possible just by making a straight line on the border. The size of the image is 15 x 15 cm. The title "Sun, you are shining and fiery!" is a verse from Katri Vala's poem.

ILOINEN UOMA / HAPPY WATERBED

 

Linopiirroskala on väritetty sinivalkoiseksi ja silmä on punainen. Taustalla aurinko heijastuu  veteen ja kala ui ihan pohjassa. Vatsan alla savi ja pienet vesikasvit kutittavat kalan vatsaa. Tausta on tehty pehmeillä pastelliliiduilla. Kuvan koko on 15 x15 cm. Nimi tälle löytyi Aale Tynnin runosta: "Iloiseen ja pieneen uomaan hyvin mahtuvani huomaan".

The linocut fish is colored blue and white and the eye is red. In the background, the sun is reflected in the water and the fish swims at the very bottom. LONDON CALLING EPE

 

"London Calling Epe" -pastelli/linopiirros on jo omalla paikallaan uudessa kodissaan. Ja paikkahan on aivan mahtava! Taulun Arsenal-jalkapallojoukkueen punainen taivas ja pohjoisen horisontissa näkyvä Emirates Stadium ovat päässeet Arsenalin vanhan areenan, eli Highbury Stadionin, tuolin ylle. Tuoli on myös punaista nahkaa. Se on aito vuonna 2008 puretun Highburyn Directors Boxin istuin. Tuolissa on alkuperäinen nimikyltti , joka mainitsee sen haltijaksi :seuran silloisen pääomistajan Lady Nina Bracewell-Smithin.Taulu ja tuoli tervehtivät asuntoon saapuvaa vaatenaulakon vieressä. Hallissa seinällä on myös punaisissa kehyksissään poptaide-kuva Johnny Rottenista, omistajan ensimmäinen taidehankinta. Mikäpäs on olla tässä seurassa!

The "London Calling Epe" pastel/linocut is already in its place in its new home. And the place is absolutely amazing! The red sky of the Arsenal football team in the painting and the Emirates Stadium visible on the northern horizon are above the chair from Arsenal's old arena, Highbury Stadium. The chair is also made of red leather. It is an authentic seat from the Directors Box at Highbury, which was demolished in 2008. The chair has an original nameplate, which mentions its owner: the club's then main owner, Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith. The painting and chair greet those entering the apartment next to a coat rack. There is also a pop art picture of Johnny Rotten on the wall in the hall in its red frames, the owner's first art acquisition. What is it like to be in this club!

Englantilaisen kuvittajan Naomi Wilkinsonin "Still Life" / "Asetelma" on vuodelta 2020. Musta, oranssisilmäinen kissa istuu kellanruskealla lattialla. Taustalla näkyvät vaakasuorat lattialistat ja pinkki kukkapurkki mustine lehtineen. Asetelma on tosi pelkistetty, mutta rauhoittava. Työ on todennäköisesti kollaasi.

EI RANTAA OLE, OI THESIS / THERE IS NO SHORE, OH THESIS

 

Tässä neljännessä versiossa pienistä linopiirroskaloista uiskentelee keltaruskeilla raidoilla väritetty trooppinen kala. Tausta on tuttuun tapaan pehmeää pastellia, nyt aika kirkkaan sinistä vettä, pieniä valkoisia aaltoja ja auringon heijastus. Kokoa kuvalla on 15 x 15 cm. Kuva sai nimen P. Mustapään runosta: "Ei rantaa ole, oi Thesis".

In this fourth version of a linocut fish, a tropical fish colored with yellow-brown stripes swims among the waves. The background is, as usual, soft pastel, now quite bright blue water, small, white waves and a reflection of the sun. The size of the picture is 15 x 15 cm. The picture was named after P. Mustapää's poem: "There is no shore, oh Thesis".

LAINE SE LIPLATTI / THE WAVE

 

Kolmas linopiirroskala onkin värikäs. Kalassa on värikynällä tehtyjä sinisiä, violetteja, punaisia, keltaisia ja vihreitä raitoja. Silmä kiiluu keltaisena. Tämän kalan tausta on pehmeillä pastelleilla tehty syvä sininen vesi, johon auringon valo heijastuu säteinä. Kuvan koko on 15 x 15 cm. Nimekseen kuva sai säkeen Lauri Pohjanpään runosta: "Päivä se porotti, laine se liplatti".

The third linocut fish is more colorful. The fish has blue, purple, red, yellow and green stripes made with colored pencils. The eye is shiny yellow. The background of this fish is deep blue water made with soft pastels, into which the sunlight is reflected in rays. The size of the picture is 15 x 15 cm. The picture was named after a verse from Lauri Pohjanpää's poem: "The day was a hot, the waves were moving".

AALLON ALLE, ELLEI ETEEN / UNDER THE WAVES, IF NOT AHEAD

Toinen linopiirroskala on sinivalkoinen. Vain silmä on punainen. Kalan taakse tuli pehmeillä pastelleilla myös sinivalkoista vettä, jonne heijastui muutama auringon säde. Kuvan koko on 15 x 15 cm. Nimeksi tuli säe Lauri Viidan runosta: "Aallon alle, ellei eteen".

VEDEN VIHREYS / GREEN WATER

 

Vedostin muutaman koeprintin pienemmistä linopiirroksista kahdesta kalasta. Testasin isompaa työtä varaten kalojen värittämistä käsin. Pelkät väritetyt kalat tuntuivat niin yksinäisiltä valkoisella paperilla, että tein niille taustaksi vettä pastelliliiduilla. Tämän kelta-ruskea-harmaan kalan taustalla on vihertävää vettä. Nimeksi kuvalle tuli "Vain metsän sini, veden vihreys ja kukat punertuvat" Pertti Niemisen runosta Omnia mea. Kalakuvan koko on 15 x 15 cm.

I made a few test prints of smaller linocuts of two fish. I tested coloring the fish by hand, testing them for a larger work. The colored fish alone seemed so lonely on white paper that I made a background of water with pastel chalks. This yellow-brown-gray fish has greenish water in the background. The picture was named "Only the blue of the forest, the green of the water and the flowers turn red" from Pertti Nieminen's poem Omnia mea. The size of the fish picture is 15 x 15 cm.

Englantilainen Frances Bond (1905-1978) maalasi paljon kissatauluja. Ja usein kissat olivat valkoisia ja pörröisiä kuten tässä kortissa. Tässä söpöläinen katsoo keltavihreillä kiiltävillä silmillään keskeltä violetinvärisiä kukkia tai kukkivaa pensasta. Jokainen kukka on maalattu huolellisesti erikseen ja lehtien vihreä erottuu kauniisti auringonvalossa.

The English artist Frances Bond (1905-1978) painted many cat paintings. And often the cats were white and fluffy, like in this card. Here, the cutie looks with her yellow-green shiny eyes in the middle of purple flowers or a flowering bush. Each flower is carefully painted separately and the green of the leaves stands out beautifully in the sunlight.

 

LONDON CALLING : 4

 

Nyt tämä Arsenal-jalkapallojoukkueen fanille tekemäni sekatekniikkatyö on varmaan valmis. Toiveesta kuvaan on lisätty Lontoon kattojen ylle Emirates Stadium ja Arsenalin punaista väriä taivaalle. Tätä "tilausta" oli tosi kiva tehdä kun on itsekin Arsenalin kannattaja. Työn nimeksi tuli The Clashin kappaletta mukaillen London Calling Epe. Kokoa kuvalla on 50 x 30 cm. Taivas on pehmeää pastellia ja linnut, kuu ja Lontoon näkymä linopiirroksia.

Now this mixed media work I made for a fan of the Arsenal football team is probably finished. As requested, the Emirates Stadium over the roofs of London and the red color of Arsenal in the sky have been added to the picture. This "order" was really nice to do as I am an Arsenal fan myself. The work was named London Calling Epe, adapted from The Clash's song. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm. The sky is soft pastel and the birds, moon and view of London are linocuts.

LONTOON TAIVAS / LONDON SKY: 3

 

Lontoon taivaalle tuli paljon Arsenalin jalkapallojoukkueen punaista väriä, sopivaa Arsenal-fanille. Keltaistakin mahtui tähän värikkääseen taivaaseen. Kuukin on juustonkeltainen, hiukan hopeanväriäkin keltaisen joukossa. Tämän on varmaan auringonlaskun jälkeinen kevättaivas. Ylhäällä on vielä sinistä taivasta pilvien lomassa ja auringon viime valo näkyy keltaisena Emirates Stadiumin ja Lontoon kattojen yllä. Pientä viimeistelyä vielä...

The London sky was filled with a lot of Arsenal football team red, suitable for a Arsenal fan. . There was also some yellow in this colorful sky. The moon is also a cheese yellow, with a bit of silver among the yellow. This must be the spring sky after sunset. LINNUT LONTOON TAIVAALLA / BIRDS IN LONDON SKY : 3

 

Lontoon kattojen ja Emirates Stadiumin ylle on tulossa lintuparvi ja kuu. Asettelin pienet linopiirrokset linnuista ja kuusta taivaalle nurinpäin eli samalla tavalla kuin ne ovat vedostettaessa. Näin näen todellisen muodon lintuparvelle, jonka ensin olin suunnitellut leivinpaperin avulla piirtämällä parven mallin. Ennen taivaan värittämistä kiinnitin vielä ohuet muoviset lintujen hahmot ja kuun taivaalle. Näin voin jättää vaaleat kohdat niiden vedostusta varten.

A flock of birds and the moon are coming over the rooftops of London and the Emirates Stadium. I placed the small linocuts of the birds and the moon in the sky upside down, the same way they are when they are printed. This way I can see the actual shape of the flock of birds, which I had first designed using baking paper by drawing a model of the flock. Before coloring the sky, I attached the thin plastic figures of the birds and the moon to the sky. This way I can leave light areas for their printing.

EMIRATES STADIUM :1

 

Yhdeltä Arsenal-jalkapalloseuraa kannattavalta ystävältä puuttui vielä sekatekniikkatyöni "London Calling". Näissä töissä alaosassa on ollut linopiirrokseni Lontoon katoista. Nyt ystävä ehdotti, että eikö voisi saada kuvaan mukaan Emirates Stadiumia. Ja mikä ettei! Poistin alaosaa vedostaessani peittämällä linopiirroksesta yhden rakennuksen. Sitten tein pienen linopiirroksen Emirates Stadiumista ja lisäsin sen aukkoon mäen päälle, ja lopuksi väritin stadionin etuseinää vielä punaiseksi. Taivaalle on tarkoitus lisätä vielä pastellia ja ehkä lintuja ja kuu tai aurinkokin.

A friend who supports Arsenal football club was still missing my mixed media work "London Calling". In these works, the lower part has been my linocut of the roofs of London. Now a friend suggested that we could include the Emirates Stadium in the picture. And why not! When I was printing the lower part, I removed one of the buildings from the linocut by covering it. Then I made a small linocut of the Emirates Stadium and added it on the hill to the gap, and finally I colored the front wall of the stadium red. The plan is to add more pastel to the sky and maybe birds and the moon or sun.

Saksalaisen kuvittajan Quint Buchholzin piirroksen nimi on osuvasti "Minä olen pomo" / "Ich bin der Chef". Tämä kissa totisesti on se, joka tässä määrää pöydän paikan. The drawing by German illustrator Quint Buchholz is aptly titled "I'm the Boss" / "Ich bin der Chef". This cat is indeed the one who determines the place of the table. The eyes are bright yellow, the nose is pink and the right front paw is dominantly on the edge of the table. The faint yellow light is nicely reflected on the right edge of the drawing.

AALLON SÄRKYNYT PEILI / THE BROKEN MIRROR OF THE WAVE

 

Kolmas versio lyhtykalasta eli merikrotista on kala, joka on pulassa. Kalaa ajaa takaa parvi pieniä kaloja, ja joukossa on voimaa. Krotti yrittää uida hentojen meriheinien suojaan, tuskin onnistuu kun tuo lyhtykin loistaa kirkkaana. Kala on punamusta linopiirros, pikkukalat punaisia pieniä linopiirroksia ja vesi pehmeää pastellia. Kuvan koko on 24 x 36 cm. Tämä kalakuva sai nimen Eila Kivikk'ahon runosta." Peili aallon särkyneen viistoon katsoo kaukaiseen".

The third version of the lantern fish is a fish in trouble. The fish is being chased by a flock of small fish, and there is strength among them. The lantern fish tries to swim to the shelter of the soft sea grasses, but it barely succeeds when that lantern shines brightly. The fish is a red-black linocut, the small fish are small red linocuts and the water is a soft pastel. The size of the picture is 24 x 36 cm. This fish picture got its name from Eila Kivikk'aho's poem "A mirror broken by a wave looks diagonally into the distance".

PENTTI KASKIPURO - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Poikettiin Pentti Kaskipuron (1930-20109 metalligrafiikan näyttelyssä Sara Hildénin taidemuseolla. Esillä oli iso museo täynnä, valtava määrä pieniä töitä, kuivaneuloja suuri osa. 1950- luvun Helsinki-maisemat vaihtuivat jo 1960-luvulta 2000 asti punajuuriin, sipuleihin, makkaroihin ja limppuihin. Kuvat olivat tummempia kuin kuvittelin, mutta ah niin rauhallisia ja seesteisiä, kuin kuiskauksia nykyisen maailman sotiin, diktaattoreihin ja melskeeseen verrattuna. Suomen talvinen mustavalkoinen maisema ikkunoista sopi hyvin mustavalkoisten töiden lomaan.

We stopped by the exhibition of Pentti Kaskipuro's (1930-20109) metal graphics at the Sara Hildén Art Museum. The large museum was full, a huge number of small works, most of them drypoints. The Helsinki landscapes of the 1950s changed from the 1960s to 2000 to beetroot, onions, sausages and bread rolls. The images were darker than I imagined, but oh so peaceful and serene, like whispers compared to the wars, dictators and chaos of today's world. The Finnish winter landscape in black and white from the windows was a perfect match for the black and white works.

LÄPI AALTOJEN / THROUGH THE WAVES

 

Toinen versioni lyhtykalasta eli merikrotista on vihreä. Kalan lyhty valaisee meren pohjaa, vain pari meriruohoa huojuu vedessä. Tämä krotti on mustavalkoinen vedos kun ensimmäinen versioni oli punamusta. Vesi on pehmeää pastellia. Kuvan koko on 24 x 36 cm. Kala sai nimensä Sirkka Seljan runosta: "Läpi aaltojen villien, kimaltavain uin vedoin notkein ja voimakkain meren vihreitä äärettömyyksiä päin".

The second version of the lantern fish is green. The fish's lantern illuminates the seabed, with only a couple of seaweeds swaying in the water. This croaker is a black and white print, while the first version was red and black.  Water is soft pastel, The size of the image is 24 x 36 cm. The fish got its name from Sirkka Selja's poem: "Through the waves' wild, glittering strokes, I swim, with supple and powerful strokes, towards the green immensities of the sea."

LUONAS KAI OLLA SAAN / I HOPE I CAN STAY WITH YOU

 

Jotain tästä sydämistä ja pilvistä vielä puuttui, mutta mitä? Lintuja tietenkin! Yksi iso linopiirroslintu - ehkä merikotka liihotteli Pispalan yllä. Mutta kotka näytti yksinäiseltä. Rakkaus eli sydämenkuvat taivaalla vaativat kavereita. Ja tulihan niitä, pieniä linopiirroslintuja - ehkä pääskysiä kokonainen parvi kaartamaan kuvan vasenta reunaa kotkaa kohti. Kuvan koko on 50 x 30 cm. Nimi on Juicen musiikista; "Luonas kai olla saan".

Something was still missing from this picture of hearts and cloud, but what? Birds of course! One big linocut bird - maybe an eagle hovered over Pispala. But the eagle looked lonely. Love, or heart images in the sky, needed friends. And then there were those, small linocut birds - maybe a whole flock of swallows, curving the left edge of the picture towards the eagle. The size of the picture is 50 x 30 cm. The name is from Juice's music; "Luonas kai olla saan" / "I Hope I Can Stay With You".
