LYHTYKALOJA / LANTERNFISH - IITTALA: 2

Naivistit Iittalassa -näyttelyssä silmiini osui tietenkin lyhtykaloja / merikrotteja, omani ja kolme muuta…

Viime kesän maalauspäivässä Iittalan puukoulun pihassa aloin kaivertaa isohkoa krottia mielessä olevaa vesiaihetta varten. Tein virheen ja kaiversin krotin hampaat valkoisiksi. Aloitin siis uudelleen alusta.

Sitten kävelin toiselle puolelle pihaa, ja Ulla Kauhanen maalasi taulua lyhtykalasta, ja nyt iloinen kala uiskentelee Iittalassa.

Omakin lyhtykalani on Iittalassa seinällä ja kas, ihan vieressä on Minna Iso-lähteenmäen mystinen merikrotti!

Ja portaat ylös kivutessa törmää Anna Niinimäen lasiseen lyhtykalaan.

At the Naive Artists at Iittala exhibition, I of course saw lanternfish/monkfish, mine and three others… Last summer, on a painting day in the yard of the Iittala wooden school, I started carving a rather large monkfish for a water theme I had in mind. I made a mistake and carved the monkfish’s teeth white. So I started over. Then I walked to the other side of the yard, and Ulla Kauhanen painted a picture of a lanternfish, and now the happy fish is swimming around at Iittala. My own lanternfish is also on the wall at Iittala, and look, right next to it is Minna Iso-lähteenmäki’s mystical monkfish! And as I was climbing the stairs, I came across Anna Niinimäki’s glass lanternfish. Naivists at Iittala is open from 18.5.-30.8.2026

AALLON SÄRKYNYT PEILI / THE BROKEN MIRROR OF THE WAVE

 

Kolmas versio lyhtykalasta eli merikrotista on kala, joka on pulassa. Kalaa ajaa takaa parvi pieniä kaloja, ja joukossa on voimaa. Krotti yrittää uida hentojen meriheinien suojaan, tuskin onnistuu kun tuo lyhtykin loistaa kirkkaana. Kala on punamusta linopiirros, pikkukalat punaisia pieniä linopiirroksia ja vesi pehmeää pastellia. Kuvan koko on 24 x 36 cm. Tämä kalakuva sai nimen Eila Kivikk'ahon runosta." Peili aallon särkyneen viistoon katsoo kaukaiseen".

The third version of the lantern fish is a fish in trouble. The fish is being chased by a flock of small fish, and there is strength among them. The lantern fish tries to swim to the shelter of the soft sea grasses, but it barely succeeds when that lantern shines brightly. The fish is a red-black linocut, the small fish are small red linocuts and the water is a soft pastel. The size of the picture is 24 x 36 cm. This fish picture got its name from Eila Kivikk'aho's poem "A mirror broken by a wave looks diagonally into the distance".

LÄPI AALTOJEN / THROUGH THE WAVES

 

Toinen versioni lyhtykalasta eli merikrotista on vihreä. Kalan lyhty valaisee meren pohjaa, vain pari meriruohoa huojuu vedessä. Tämä krotti on mustavalkoinen vedos kun ensimmäinen versioni oli punamusta. Vesi on pehmeää pastellia. Kuvan koko on 24 x 36 cm. Kala sai nimensä Sirkka Seljan runosta: "Läpi aaltojen villien, kimaltavain uin vedoin notkein ja voimakkain meren vihreitä äärettömyyksiä päin".

The second version of the lantern fish is green. The fish's lantern illuminates the seabed, with only a couple of seaweeds swaying in the water. This croaker is a black and white print, while the first version was red and black.  Water is soft pastel, The size of the image is 24 x 36 cm. The fish got its name from Sirkka Selja's poem: "Through the waves' wild, glittering strokes, I swim, with supple and powerful strokes, towards the green immensities of the sea."

TYYNI VESI / CALM WATER

 

Tein linopiirroksen lyhtykalasta eli merikrotista yhtä isompaa sekatekniikkatyötä varten. Vedostin muutaman krotin yksinään paperille, ja kala näytti niin yksinäiseltä, että halusin tehdä sille taustan pastelliväreillä. Lyhtykalan keltainen lamppu valaiseen tietä aaltojen alla. Tämä kuva sai nimekseen "Kalvo tyynen veden kantajaansa kuvastaa" yhdestä Eila Kivikk'ahon runosta. Kuvan koko on 36 x 24 cm.

I made a linocut of a lanternfish for a larger mixed media work. I printed a few lanternfish on paper by themselves, and the fish looked so lonely that I wanted to make a background for it in pastel colors. The yellow lamp of the lanternfish lights the way under the waves. This image was named "Kalvo tyynen veden kantajaansa kuvastaa" (The Film of Calm Water Reflects Its Carrier) from one of Eila Kivikk'aho's poems.THe size of the picture is 36 x 24 cm.

HUKUIN, NUKUIN, HERÄSIN /I DROWNED, I SLEPT, I WOKE UP

 

Nyt taitaa olla valmis tämä isohko sekatekniikkatyö lyhtykalasta Tahmelan rantavesissä. Kuvan yläosassa Pispalan rinne - linopiirros nousee Tahmelan rannasta viljelypalstojen taakse. Punaisessa haulitornissa loistaa ikkunoista valo. Vesi on tehty pehmeällä pastellilla, mutta simpukat, vesikasvit ja kalat ovat linopiirroksia. Pari trooppista kalaa on käsin väritetty. Eikä tällaisia kaloja Tahmelan rannan matalassa vedessä ui muuten kuin mielikuvituksessani. Kuvan koko on 130 x 90 cm. Nimeä etsin työlle pitkään, ja päädyin tällaiseen Juice Leskisen kappaleesta Syvänmeren sukeltaja: "Hukuin, nukuin, heräsin - mä täältä löysin taivaan".

Now I think I've finished this rather large mixed media work of lanternfish in the waters of Tahmela. At the top of the picture, the Pispala ridge - a linocut - rises from the shore of Tahmela behind the vegetable plots. Light shines from the windows in the red shot tower. The water is done with soft pastel, but the mussels, aquatic plants and fish are linocuts. A couple of tropical fish have been hand-colored. And there are no fish like this swimming in the shallow water of Tahmela shore except in my imagination. The size of the picture is 130 x 90 cm. I searched for a name for the work for a long time, and I ended up with this one from Juice Leskinen's song Deep Sea Diver: "I drowned, I slept, I woke up - I found heaven here".

PIKKUKALOJA / LITTLE FISH: osa/Part 7

 

Lisäsin liudan linopiirroksia pikkukaloista kuvan vasemmalle reunalle. Kalaparvi on matkalla ylös rantaan. Linopiirrokset ovat leimasimia, jotka olen liimannut viinipullon korkkeihin jotta niihin saa hiukan painovoimaa. Näitä pikkukalojen stamppeja voisi lisätä leimasinmusteellakin, mutta käytän tässä ihan tavallista linoväriä.

I added a bunch of linocuts of little fish to the left side of the picture. A flock of fish is making their way up to the shore. The linocuts are stamps that I have glued to wine bottle caps to give them a bit of gravity. These little fish stamps could also be added with stamp ink, but I am using regular linoprint ink here.

KALAPARVI / FLOCK OF FISH: osa/Part 6

 

Pastelliveteen alkaa nyt muotoutua parvi kaloja. Kalat liikkuvat kuvan oikealla reunalta ylös rantaveteen. Pari outoakin kalaa näkyy vasemmassa alakulmassa: minikokoinen hai ja pallokala. Näitäkään lajeja ei varmuudella ole Tahmelan rantavedessä, mutta mielikuvituksessa sekin on mahdollista.

A flock of fish is now starting to form in the pastel water. The fish are moving from the right edge of the picture up into the shore water. A couple of strange fish can be seen in the lower left corner: a mini-sized shark and a puffer fish. These species are also definitely not found in the Tahmela shore water, but in the imagination they are also possible.

LISÄÄ KALOJA / MORE FISH : osa/part 5

 

Sekatekniikkatyö lyhtykalasta Tahmelan rannassa sai väliaikaisesti häädön joulujuhlien tieltä pesuhuoneeseen. Mahtui sinne juuri ja juuri, ja kaikenlaisia vaaroja on näin ison paperin siirtelyssä.Lisää kaloja veteen jo tuli uiskentelemaan.

The mixed-media work of the lantern fish on the Tahmela shore was temporarely moved to the washroom due to the Christmas party. It barely fit in there, and there are all kinds of dangers in moving such a large piece of paper. More fish have already come to swim in the water.

LYHDYN VALONSÄTEET / STRAYS OF LIGHT OF THE LANTERN : osa /part 4

 

Linopiirrokset kaloista ovat edelleen vedostamatta, mutta suunnittelen jo niiden taakse merikrotin valonsäteitä. Vaaleamman ja tummemman sinisen pastelliveden välissä tulee olemaan vihertävää vettä eli pastelliväriä.

The linocuts of the fish are still unprinted, but I'm already planning the light rays of the monkfish behind them. Between the lighter and darker blue pastel water, there will be greenish water, pastel color.

POHJAVETTÄ / BOTTOM WATER : osa /part 3

 

Pastelliveteen alkoi jo muotoutua pohja, johon auringon valo hiukan  heijastuu. Pohjaan on tulossa pieniä linopiirroksia kotiloista, yksi meritähti ja pari vesikasvia. joille haen paikkoja. Pohjassa vesi tulee olemaan tumman sininen, ja vesi vaalenee kun mennään pintaa kohti. Pienille linopiirroksille kaloista haen paikkoja.

The pastel water and bottom have already started to take shape, with a little sunlight reflecting off the bottom. I'm looking for places for small linocuts of seashells, one starfish and a couple of aquatic plants on the bottom. MERIKROTIN VALO / LIGHT OF THE MONKFISH : osa /part 2

 

Lyhtykala eli merikrotti tulee olemaan tämän pastelliveden kuningas. Sillä on lyhty, jolla levittää valonsäteitä pohjaan asti. Tässä vaiheessa tein aika kirkkaan keltaiset valonsäteet ja ne näyttävät hirveiltä. Voisin heittää hanskat tiskiin, mutta aion peittää kirkkaimman valon sinisen tai vihertävän veden alle.

The lanternfish, or monkfish, will be the king of this pastel water. It has a lantern that spreads rays of light all the way to the bottom. At this point I made the rays of light quite bright yellow my gloves in the sink, but I'm going to cover the brightest light under the blue or greenish water.

VETTÄ JA KALOJA / WATER AND FISH : osa /part 1

 

Piti hankkia vielä aiempaa isompi vanerinpala pöytälevyn päälle, jotta suunnittelemani vesi ja kalat mahtuisivat kaikki kerralla näkyviin. Levyn koko on metri kertaa metri. No, aiemmin paperin yläreunaan vedostamani Pispala-näkymä jää levyn ulkopuolelle, mutta siihen ei aiokaan levittää pastelliväriä kuten veteen. Suurin kala tässä rantavedessä tulee olemaan lyhtykala eli merikrotti.

I had to get an even bigger piece of plywood to put on the tabletop so that the water and fish I designed could all fit in at once. The size of the board is a meter by a meter. Well, the Pispala view that I previously printed on the top edge of the paper will remain outside the board, but I don't plan on applying pastel color to it like I will do to the water. The biggest fish in this coastal water will be a lanternfish, or monkfish.
