Sarah Maycockin vesivärimaalauksessa "Kollikissa"on hieno tunnelma ja värit. Kapea kuja korkeine mustine talonseinineen näyttää uhkaavalta, ja sitä vain korostaa taustan synkkä sininen taivas. Ja entäs musta kissa hyökkäävässä asennossa varjonsa takana? Tämä ei ole mikään söpöliini. 

Kortin takana on Don Marquisin (1878-1937) runo:

Keskiyöllä kujalla

kolli tulee valittamaan,
ja se laulaa miljoonien vuosien vihaa
heiluttaen käärmehäntäänsä.

 Sarah Maycock'’s watercolor painting "The Tom-Cat" has a great atmosphere and colors. The narrow alley with its tall black walls looks menacing, and it is only emphasized by the gloomy blue sky in the background. And what about the black cat in an attacking position behind its shadow? This is not a cutie. 

On the back of the card is a poem by Don Marquis (1878-1937)

At midnight in the alley
A tom-cag comes to wail,
And he chants the hate of million years
As he swings his snaky tail.

 

ILOINEN AURINKO / HAPPY SUN

 Iloinen aurinko virnistää taivaalla ja pääskyset lentää ohi. Vedostin li nopiirroksen auringosta kaksi kertaa päällekkäin, ensin vaaleamman oranssin  ja päälle tummemman. Auringon naama ja pääskyt ovat liopiirroksia, taivas monoprintti. Kuvan koko on 15 x 15 cm.

The happy sun grins in the sky and swallows fly by. I printed the linocut of the sun twice, first a lighter orange and then a darker one on top of it. The sun's face and the swallows are linocuts, the sky is a monoprint. The size of the image is 15 x 15 cm.

TIKKA JA KUU / WOODPECKER & MOON

 Linopiirros tikasta lentelee monotypiataustalla ohi oranssin kuun. Tikan pää ja vatsa on väritetty käsin punaisiksi. Näitä linokuita oli kiva testailla. Taidan jatkaa linoauringoilla. Kuita on nyt neljä, kunkin  koko 15 x 15 cm.

A linocut of a woodpecker is flying past an orange moon on a monotype background. The head and belly of the woodpecker are hand-colored red. It was fun to test these moon linocuts. I think I'll continue with linocuts of the sun. There are now four of these moons, each measuring 15 x 15 cm.

LISÄÄ KUITA/ MORE MOONS

Muutamassa uudessa linopiirroksessa kuusta on monotypiataustalla stamppeja/leimasimia linopiirroslinnuista. Yritin tehdä lintuja valkoisina, mutta ne eivät kunnolla erotu siniseltä pohjalta. En vieläkään ole löytänyt kunnolla peittävää valkoista akryyliväriä! Oranssin kuun kuvion painoin ensin  gellilevylle ja vasta siitä paperille. Oikeastaan pidän tuosta hiukan sumeasta painojäljestä. Kuvien koko on 15 x 15 cm.

In a few new linocuts of the moon, there are stamps of linocut birds on a monotype background. I even tried to make the birds white, but they don't really stand out against the blue background. I still haven't found a white acrylic paint that covers well! I first printed the orange moon pattern on a gelli plate and only then on paper. I actually like that slightly fuzzy print. The size of the images is 15 x 15 cm.

KUU JA PIKKULINNUT / MOON AND SMALL BIRDS

Kuu on linopiirros, jonka "vedostin" gellilevylle ja siitä paperille taustan  sinertävän monoprintin kanssa.  Pienet stampit/leimasimet linnuista ovat linopiirroksia. Kuvan koko on 15 x 15 cm.

The moon is a linocut that I "printed" onto a gelli plate and then onto paper with a bluish monoprint in the background. The small stamps of the birds are linocuts. The size of the image is 15 x 15 cm.

KUITA JA AURINKOJA / MOONS AND SUNS

 

Tein jo kymmeniä linopiirroslintuja monotypiataustalla. Kun huomaa, että työpöytä on muuttunut karmeksi kaaokseksi ja työvälineitä on kertynyt kasoiksi, aavistelee, että nyt pitää lopettaa monotypiasotkut vähäksi aikaa. Mutta sitä ennen ehtii vielä hyvin kokeilla kuita tai aurinkoja. Käytin kuun ja auringon linopiirroksia monoprinttikuvioina. Toimiihan sekin. Näille kuville kuista ja auringoista pitää varmaan tehdä vielä jotain viimeistelyä.

I've already made dozens of linocut birds on a monotype background. When you notice that your desk has turned into a terrible chaos and your tools have piled up, you know that it's time to stop the monotype mess for a while. But before that, there's still plenty of time to try moons or suns. I used linocuts of the moon and sun as monoprint patterns. That works too. I probably need to do some finishing on these pictures of moons and suns.

Englantilaisen kuvittajan Naomi Wilkinsonin Asetelma vuodelta 2020 on tosi pelkistetty. Vaikea päätellä, onko kuva kollaasi, maalaus vai grafiikkaa. Vihreä kissa istuu siniraitaisen kukkapurkin tai maljakon vieressä, alempana on hedelmävati ja tuuletin (?). Tämä selkeä asetelma voisi olla vaikkapa lastenkirjan kuvitusta.

English illustrator Naomi Wilkinson's Still Life from 2020 is very minimalist. It's hard to tell if the image is a collage, a painting or a graphic. A green cat is sitting next to a blue-striped flower pot or vase, below is a fruit bowl and a fan (?). This simple still life could be an illustration for a children's book.

JUHANNUS / MIDSUMMER

 

Juhannus on Suomen kesän suurin juhla. Yö on yötön eli aurinko ei pohjoisessa laske ollenkaan. Kevään ja alkukesän päivät ovat olleet viileitä, joka toinen päivä on satanut vettä, joka toinen päivä on ehkä näkynyt aurinkoa. Tänään, juhannusaattona, tuntuu olevan kesän kaunein päivä, ja kesämökillä tuntuvat punaiset kukat aukeavan, ja hiukan keltaisetkin. Aika pysähtyy. Tällainen aika on todella tärkeää taiteilijoillekin. Jotain uusia ideoita voi syntyä kun ilmassa tuntuu olevan tilaa, kukkien tuoksuja, värejä ja pysähtyneisyyttä.

Midsummer is the biggest celebration of the Finnish summer. The night is nightless, meaning the sun doesn't set at all in the north. The days of spring and early summer have been cool, it has rained every other day, and maybe every other day the sun has been visible. Today, Midsummer's Eve, feels like the most beautiful day of the summer, and the red flowers seem to be opening at the summer cottage, and a few yellow ones too. Time stops. This kind of time is really important for artists too. Some new ideas can arise when there feels like there is space in the air, the scents of flowers, colors and stillness.

VILLI KOLLEKTIIVI - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Haiharan taidekeskuksen Tallissa on esillä 7 taiteilijan näyttely Rewilding villiintymisestä. Villi - kollektiiviin kuuluvat Johanna Ali-Tolppa, Hannakaisa Hautamäki, Minna Lumiluoto, Terhi Mäkkylä, Pirje Seppälä, Terhi Ulonen ja Pirjo Virtanen. He ovat opiskelleet yhdessä Pirkan Opiston aikuisten kuvataidekoulussa. Tosi hienoa, että Tampereen kaupungilla on tarjota Tallin tasoinen, upea näyttelypaikka innokkaille ryhmille! Tässäkin näyttelyssä kokee antautumista, villiintymistä ja ideoita, monenlaista ja monentyylistä. Väri-iloittelut viehättivät ja olihan siellä leijona-puupiirroksestakin neljä versiota.

The Haihara Art Center's Talli is exhibiting an exhibition of 7 artists about going wild. The Villi collective includes Johanna Ali-Tolppa, Hannakaisa Hautamäki, Minna Lumiluoto, Terhi Mäkkylä, Pirje Seppälä, Terhi Ulonen and Pirjo Virtanen. They studied together at the Pirkan Opisto adult art school. It's great that the city of Tampere has a wonderful exhibition space on the level of Talli for enthusiastic groups! In this exhibition too, you can experience surrender, going wild and ideas, of many kinds and styles. The joys of color were captivating and there were even four versions of the lion woodcut.

PETRA HEIKKILÄ - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Haiharassa Runebergin mökissä, Interiry:n kesäpuodin ohessa isossa, tunnelmallisessa, hämärässä hirsihuoneessa viehättävät nyt Petra Heikkilän eläinmaalaukset, kissat ja koirat, hiukan ihmisen tapaiset olennot. Maalaukset sopivat hienosti hirsiseinien sävyihin, ja samoin niiden koristeelliset kehykset, Petran tavaramerkki.

Samaa teemaa voi sitten jatkaa Naivistit Iittalassa-kesänäyttelyssä.

In Haihara at Runeberg's cottage, next to Interi's summer shop, in a large, atmospheric, dim log room, Petra Heikkilä's animal paintings, cats and dogs, somewhat human-like creatures, are now charming. The paintings fit perfectly with the tones of the log walls, as do their decorative frames, Petra's trademark. The same theme can then be continued in the Naivisti Iittalassa summer exhibition.

NAIVISMIN ILOA VILLA ARMAASSA / JOY OF NAIVE ART AT GALLERY VILLA ARMAS

Nyt on avattu Naivismin iloa-näyttely Kangasalla Pikonlinnassa, galleria Villa Armaassa galleristi/kuraattori Auli Tikkalan avaamana. Hieno ripustus, upea tunnelma, kivaa jutustelua. Näyttely on avoinna 15.6.-31.8.2025 joka päivä 12-18.

Naisvoittoisessa taiteilijaryhmässä ilahduttivat erityisesti Anne Leppäsen herkät maalaukset, mm. ”Mummu lähti tapaamaan katusoittajaa”, Anna Luostarinen satuisin aihein ja porukan ainoan miehen Seppo Seppäsen värikkäät arvoitukset. Mukana kymmenen naivistia, käy nauttimassa avarassa ja tunnelmallisessa funkkistalossa!

The Joy of Naive Art exhibition has now opened in Kangasala, Pikonlinna, at the Villa Armas gallery, opened by gallerist/curator Auli Tikkala. Great hanging, great atmosphere, nice conversation. The exhibition is open from 15.6.-31.8.2025 every day from 12-18. In the female-dominated group of artists, Anne Leppänen's delicate paintings were particularly pleasing, including "Grandma went to meet the street singer", Anna Luostarinen with fairy-tale themes and the colorful riddles of the only man in the group, Seppo Seppänen. Ten naive artists are included, come and enjoy the spacious and atmospheric house from the Functionalistic era!
