JOULU TULEE /CHRISTMAS COMING

Jo ennen olkavarren loukkaantumista olin ajatellut tehdä pari joulukorttia jo vanhemmasta linopiirroksesta, jossa kissa nukkuu tyynyllä. Löysin kaapista kirjavia papereita, joissa oli jokunen jouluinenkin tai punainen. Leikkelin papereista palasia, jotka liimasin ikäänkuin tyynyksi kissan taakse. Nyt pitäisi vain vedostaa kissalino tyynyn päälle.

Even before my upper arm injury, I had thought of making a couple of Christmas cards from an older linocut of a cat sleeping on a pillow. I found some variegated papers in the closet, some with Christmas teme or red ones. I cut out pieces of paper, which I glued as a pillow behind the cat. Now all you have to do is print the cat lino on the pillow.

Joku on lätkäissyt kissan päähän punaisen baretin. Se tekee olon hiukan oudoksi, silmät yrittävät hahmottaa, mikä pään päällä on, ja suu menee mutrulle. Kuvan on tehnyt englantilainen lastenkirjojen kuvittaja Jo Clark, nähtävästi aika nopeasti kissan viirujenkin perusteella. Sai ainakin minut hymyilemään!

Someone has put a red beret on the cat's head. It makes him feel a little strange, his eyes try to figure out what's on top of his head, and his mouth is grinning. The picture was made by English children's book illustrator Jo Clark, apparently quite quickly based on the cat's markings. At least it made me smile!

KIRJA: JULIETTE / BOOK: JULIETTE

Olkavarren murtumasta toipuessa on ollut aikaa jopa lukemiseen. tämä kirja on ihan huippu: Camille Jourdy: "Juliette". Yli 200-sivuinen graafinen romaani pistää haukkomaan henkeä. Kirjassa Juliette palaa Pariisista kotiseudulleen, etsii juuriaan, elämänsä tarkoitusta ja rauhaa. Ja mitä kaikkea ympärillä tapahtuukaan, tilanteet on kuvattu tarkkanäköisesti, inhimillisesti, hiukan melankolisesti ja hauskastikin. Kuvitus on upea, vesiväriä, jokainen aukeama avaa kuin uuden tunnelman. Pienet ja suuret kuvat vuorottelevat ja luovat erinomaisen rytmin kerrontaan. Teos on alkujaan ranskankielinen, mutta englanninkielinenkin versio toimii: "Juliette or, the Ghosts Return in the Spring."

 While recovering from a fractured upper arm, there has even been time to read. this book is top notch: Camille Jourdy: "Juliette". The over 200-page graphic novel is breathtaking. In the book, Juliette returns from Paris to her hometown, searches for her roots, the purpose of her life and peace. And no matter what ever is happening around, the situations are described carefully, humanely, a little melancholic and even funny. The illustration is wonderful, watercolor,every turning up a new page opens up a new atmosphere. Small and large pictures alternate and create an excellent rhythm for the narrative. The work is originally in French, but the English version also works: "Juliette or, the Ghosts Return in the Spring."

KAHDEN PISPALAN VEDOSTUSTA / PRINTING TWO PISPALA LINOCUTS

Koevedoksen tekeminen kahdesta erillisestä linopiirroksesta yhdessä on aina jännittävää. Pintaa musteen levittämiselle riittää. Onko väriä tarpeeksi. Vai nko väriä liikaa, jolloin näin yksityiskohtia täynnä oleva kuva menee "tukkoon". Muuten tulos näyttää aika hyvältä, mutta vielä pitää kaivertaa lisää pois vaaleammista kohdista eli taivaasta ja tarkkailla kynäjalavan oksien sulautumista paremmin taivaaseen. Tämä homma oli siis tekeillä ennen kuin kompastuin ja mursin olkavarteni. Ehkä tämä tästä vielä....

Making a test print from two separate linocuts together is always exciting. There is enough surface to spread the ink. Is there enough color? Or too much color, and the picture full of details like this becomes "clogged". Otherwise, the result looks pretty good, but you still need to carve more away from the lighter areas, i.e. the sky, and observe how the branches of the elm tree blend better into the sky. So this thing was in the works before I tripped and fractured my shoulder. Getting better slowly....

KAKSI PISPALAA YHTEEN / TWO PISPALAS TOGETHER

 Suunnittelen kahden viimeisimmän linopiirrokseni yhdistämistä yhdeksi 30 x 80 cm kokoiseksi työksi. Toisella puolella kuvaa on Tahmelan rannan kynäjalava ja toisella puolella Pispalan rinne taloineen ja rappuineen.

I am planning to combine my two latest linocuts into one 30 x 80 cm work. On one side of the picture is the elmtree of the Tahmela beach and on the other side is the  Pispala ridge with its houses and stairs.

Tässä hempeän pastellisävyisessä kuvassa kissa on keskellä rönsyilevää kukkaketoa ja köynnöksen oksia on levittäytynyt kuvan ulkopuolelle kortin reunoillekin. Kuvan kaareva ikkunamalli kuin jostain palatsista korostaa romanttista tunnelmaa. Mutta itse kissa katselee hiukan poissaolevan tuntuisena, ehkä vaanien saalista. Minusta kissa näyttää joltain petoeläimeltä, vaikka saukolta. Taiteilija on englantilainen kuvittaja ja monitaituri Valerie Greeley (s. 1953).

In this cozy pastel-colored picture, the cat is in the middle of a sprawling field of flowers, and the vine branches have spread beyond the picture to the edges of the card. The arched window model in the picture, as if from a palace, emphasizes the romantic atmosphere. But the cat itself looks a little absent-minded, maybe looking after a prey. To me, the cat looks like some kind of predatory animal, like an otter. The artist is the English illustrator and multi-talent Valerie Greeley (b. 1953).

KESÄ / SUMMER

Linopiirroksen Pispalan rinteestä vedostin jo ennen kuin kaaduin ja mursin olkapääni. Nyt tuntuu ihan mahtavalta kun pystyi värittämään yläkulmassa vasemmalla olevan Pispalan haulitornin ihan itse oikealla kädellä. Olkapään venytyksiä ja harjoitteita pitäisi vaan tehdä, lääkärin määräyksestä, 30 kertaa päivässä! Joopa joo, puhelimeen pitää tehdä muistutus.

Tämä on ehkä eniten ykstyiskohtia sisältävä linopiirrokseni Pispalasta, ja aika isokin, 30 x 40 cm. Seuraavaksi aion yhdistää tämän linopiirrokseen Tahmelan rannan kynäjalavasta. alkua siihen on olemassa jo ajalta ennen murtumaa.

I printed this linocut from the Pispala ridge already before I fell and fractured my shoulder. Now it feels really great, marvellous when I was able to color the Pispala shot tower in the upper left corner with my right hand. Shoulder stretches and exercises should be done, as prescribed by the doctor, 30 times a day! Yes, yes, you have to set a reminder on the phone.

This is perhaps my linocut of Pispala with the most details, and quite big too, 30 x 40 cm. Next, I'm going to combine this with a linocut from the elm elm on Tahmela beach. the beginning of it already exists from the time before the fracture.

 

ETSY-OSTOKSIA MAAILMALLE / FROM ETSY INTO THE WORLD

 Etsy-kauppani kautta tilatut keittiöpyyhkeet ja kalenteri 2024 ovat lähdössä postin mukana maailmalle: Ruotsiin ja USA:han. On aina kiehtovaa ajatella, miten niitä käytetään uusissa kodeissaan, kuivataan tiskejä, ehkä laitetaan roikkumaan hellan kahvaan. Ja kalenteri, sehän tuo esiin oudon suomalaisen sananlaskun joka kuukausi. Googlen kääntäjä kyllä kääntää tekstin eri kielille. Mutta aukeaako sananlaskun merkitys käännettynä? Sananlaskujen ideahan on maailmanlaajuinen, mutta sama viisaus saatetaan eri kielillä ilmaista ihan eri sanoilla tai vertauksella.

 Tea towels and calendar 2024 ordered through my Etsy shop are leaving by post out intothe world: to Sweden and the USA. It's always fascinating to think how they will be used in their new homes, for drying the dishes, maybe hanging them on the handle of the oven. And the calendar, it brings out a strange Finnish proverb every month. Google translator does translate the text into different languages. But does the meaning of the proverb unfold when translated? The idea of proverbs is global, but the same wisdom may be expressed in different languages with completely different words or parable.

 

PUUHANURKKA /HOBBY CORNER

 Perustin olkavarren kuntouttamisen ajaksi kotiin puuhanurkan. Ainakin jotain pientä tässä voi tehdä pätkittäin jumpan ohessa. Suunnittelu ainakin onnistuu, uusia ideoita jo putkahtelee, ne pitäisi vain muistaa kirjata, etteivät tässä kokonaan unohdu. 

Levittelen välillä kipeälle olkapäälle alkujaan hevosille kehitettyä linimenttiä. Kelpaa se ihmisellekin.

While rehabilitating my upper arm, I set up a hobby corner at home. At least something small can be done intermittently in addition to stretching and bending. At least the planning is possible, new ideas are already flowing, you just have to remember to write them down so that they are not completely forgotten.

Intermittently I apply a liniment originally developed for horses to my sore shoulder. It's good for humans too.

Mike - British Museumin kissa on kuvassa faaraoiden aikaisen kissapatsaan vieressä. Kortin takaa paljastuu kissan tarina, mutta ei kuvan tekijää. Black Jack - lukusalin kissa (ehkä musta hahmo taustalla) löysi Miken. Tämä raitainen kissa otti kodikseen portinvartijan mökin seuraavaksi yhdeksäksitoista vuodeksi, ja Mike oli hyvin suosittu vierailijoiden keskuudessa. Mike tepasteli British Museumissa vuosina 1908-1929.

Mike - The cat from the British Museum is pictured next to a cat statue from the time of the pharaohs. The back of the card reveals the story of the cat, but not the author of the picture. Black Jack - the Reading Room Cat (maybe the black figure in the background) found Mike. This striped cat made the gatekeeper's cabin his home for the next nineteen years, and Mike was very popular with visitors. Mike pranced at the British Museum between 1908 and 1929.

KESÄ / SUMMER

Linopiirros Pispalan harjusta "Kesä jatkuu" eli kynäjalava -linopiirroksen kaveriksi on vedostettu. Olisiko tämän nimi vain "Kesä". Taivasta voisi ehkä vielä vaalentaa eli kaivertaa lisää linoa pois, jotta rinne erottuisi paremmin. Ja haulitorni vasemmassa ylälaidassa pitää värittää punaiseksi. Muuten tämä 30 x 40 cm linopiirros vastaa aika hyvin sitä, mikä oli mielessäni, oikeastaan koko kesän ajan.

The linocut from Pispala's ridge is now printed as a friend to the earlier linocut "Summer Continues" or elm linocut. This one might be called just "Summer". The sky could perhaps be lightened, i.e. cut off more lino, so that the ridge stands out better. And the Pispala shot tower on the upper left corner should be colored red. Otherwise, this 30 x 40 cm linocut corresponds quite well to what I had in mind, actually through the whole summer.

PISPALAN RINNE - LINO KAIVERRETTU / PISPALA RIDGE - LINO IS CARVED

Linopiirros Pispalan rinteestä on kaiverrettu. Ja olihan siinä näpräämistä, kymmeniä taloja, parit portaat, vene, puita ja vettä. tämä on japanilaista vinyyliä, 30 x 40 cm, ihanteellinen materiaali pienten, tarkkojen yksityiskohtien kaivertamiseen, ei murene.

Ehdin vedostaa tämän linopiirroksen paperille sekä aloitella isomman kahden tällaisen Pispala-linon vedostusta yhdeksi isommaksi kuvaksi (tämä rinne + kynäjalava), mutta sitten kaaduin olkapäälleni Tahmelan omenatarhan polulla kymmenisen päivää sitten. Oikea käsi on nyt kantositeessä, sillä olkavarressa on murtuma. Ainut ilo tässä taitaa olla, että olkapäätä ei tarvitse leikata. Mutta käden saaminen toimintakuntoon (olen oikeakätinen) tulee viemään aikaa. Nyt olen vasta puristellut vanhaa Saddam-stressilelua. Kuvataiteilijallehan käden toiminta on välttämätöntä, ja kun sen menettää vaikka vain väliaikaisesti, se on iso psyykkinenkin mullistus. Kyky innostua, kokea luovuutta ja ehkä onnistumisen ilokin katoaa, sopeutuminen tilanteeseen ei ole helppoa. Tekstin tekijä voi ehkä tuottaa tekstiä puhumisen avulla, ja laulaja voi laulaa, mutta linon kaivertaminen, värin levittäminen tai kuvan vedostaminen tuntuvat nyt ihan ylellisyydeltä. Blogitekstin naputtelee hitaasti vasemmallakin kädellä, ja Googlen kääntäjä (AI ?) muuttaa tekstin englanniksi käden käänteessä Jatkan siis blogia omaksi ilokseni postailemalla keskeneräisiä töitä tai muuta mieleen tulevaa. Pysykää pystyssä ja nauttikaa syksystä!

The linocut of Pispala's ridge is engraved. And after all, there was a mess, dozens of houses, a couple of stairs, a boat, trees and water. This is Japanese vinyl, 30 x 40 cm, ideal material for engraving small, precise details, will not crumble.

I had time to print this linocut on paper and start combining two of these Pispala linos into one bigger picture (this ridge + elm), but then I fell on my shoulder on the path of the Tahmela apple orchard ten days ago. The right arm is now in a sling, as there is a fracture in the upper arm. The only joy here seems to be that the shoulder does not have to be operated. But getting my hand in working condition (I'm right-handed) will take time. Now I've just squeezed the old rubber Saddam stress toy. After all, for a visual artist, the function of the hand is essential, and when you lose it, even temporarily, it's a big psychological upheaval. The ability to get excited, experience creativity and maybe even the joy of success disappears, adapting to the situation is not easy. The author of the text may be able to produce the text by speaking, and the singer can sing, but carving a lino, spreading color or printing a picture now seems like a luxury. I tap the blog text slowly with my left hand, and the Google translator (AI ?) changes the text to English in the blink of an eye. Stay upright and enjoy autumn!

Janice Thompsonin maalauksen tila on lastenhuone, vanhanaikaisen lämmin vaaleanpunainen. Kuvan nimikin on  "Warm by the Fire" / "Takan lämmössä". Kolme kissaa odottaa silmät suurina leikkikaveriaan. Kaappikello raksuttaa ja takassa ritisee. Huone on täynnä leikkikaluja: kaksi nallea, nukke, rumpu, pallo, nukkekoti, keinuhevonen ja kirjainpalikoita. Kuka ei haluaisi leikkiä?

The room in Janice Thompson's painting is a nursery, an old-fashioned warm pink. The name of the picture is "Warm by the Fire". Three cats are waiting with wide eyes for their playmate. The cabinet clock ticks and the fireplace crackles. The room is full of toys: two teddy bears, a doll, a drum, a ball, a dollhouse, a rocking horse and letter blocks. Who doesn't want to play?

Marjorie Warrenin "Valkoinen kissa" on tekstiilityö. Erilaisia kankaan palasia on yhdistetty. Taustan muodostavat palaset kahdesta erilaisesta sinivoittoisesta kankaasta ja yksi punainen palanen. Kissa on leikattu valkoisesta kankaasta ja rusetti keltaisesta. Palaset on sitten vain  tikattu  ompelukoneella yhteen. Yksinkertaista, vai mitä! Tätähän voisi melkein itsekin kokeilla.

Marjorie Warren's "White Cat" is a textile work. Different pieces of fabric have been combined. The background is made up of pieces of two different blue fabrics and one red piece. The cat is cut from white fabric and the bow from yellow. The pieces are then simply quilted together with a sewing machine. Simple, isn't it!  I could almost try this myself.

Vähitellen talot alkavat näkyä kaiverrettuina tässä linopiirroksessa Pispalan rinteestä. Eteenpäin vaan, talo kerrallaan. Rannassa halusin tehdä santaa ja käytin pienten reikien tekoon vasaraa ja naulaa. Linnut lähipuissa ihmettelivät sitä nakutusta.

Little by little, the houses start to appear carved in this linocut from the Pispala ridge. Going ahead, one house at a time. On the beach, I wanted to make sand and I used a hammer and a nail to make small holes. The birds in the nearby trees marveled at that pecking.
