The book Plants and Places of English graphic artist Angie Lewin´s work has often been in my hands now for a year - I got it as a Christmas present last Christmas. Lewin introduces the techniques she is using by many examples: wood engraving, linocut, lithography, screen printing, and collage. It´s really interesting to see how she combines wood engraving with linocutting in the same picture and might even colour the picture by hand. Almost all her works are pulled from several plates. In the same picture there might be almost ten different colour plates. So, Lewin´s working method is slow. She makes sketches from plants, flowers and landscapes walking around Scotland and Norfolk and then utilizes her sketches in her graphic work. The names of chapters reflect finely her subjects and working methods: Coast, Woodland and Hedgerow, River and Loch, Meadow and Garden, Studio. This book gives the image, that Lewin really enjoys making her pictures, all the different steps with which the idea transfers to her pictures.
