Last time visiting London I found a lovely gallery just beside Tate Modern: Bankside Gallery (48 Hopton Street). There were a lot of graphics in passepartouts for sale and there are held a lot of graphics exhibitions - just now there is an exhibition of small framed and unframed art works, which make perfect Christmas presents. I found a small booklet in the bookshop of the gallery: Gwen Raverat: Wood Engravings. In this booklet there are small pictures of Raverat´s wood engravings, and they are masterly: animals, nature, people in their their chores. The markings of the wood engraving are clear and beautiful. For me earlier unknown Gwen Raverat (1885-1957) was a grandchild of Charles Darwin, and she was by 1920 an influential figure in the founding of the Society of Wood Engravers in England. This small book is like a gem, I turn its pages slowly and carefully.
