Kaksi hyvin vakavan näköistä kissaa vartioi pientä lampea takapihalla. Ankanpoikanen aikoo ehkä silti mennä pulikoimaan veteen. Kissojen turkki ja ankan höyhenet on tarkkaan maalattu, Samalla terävyydellä on kuvattu lukemattomat pienet kukkaset nurmikolla ja pensaissa, kukkaruukut, kasvien lehdet, tiiliseinä ja pilvet kesätaivaalla. Maalaus on kanadalaissyntyisen (s. 1962), mutta Englannissa opiskeluajoistaan asti asuneen Janice Thompsonin.

Two very stern looking cats are guarding a small pond in the backyard. A small duck might still go and have a splash in the pond. The fur of the cats and the feathers of the duckling are precisely painted. With the same precision are depicted also the countless tiny flowers on the lawn and bushes, flower pots, plant leaves, brick wall and clouds in the summer sky. The painting is by Janice Thompson, born in Canada (b. 1962) but living in England since her students days.

PISPALAN TIKAT / WOODPECKERS OF PISPALA

En todella ole kovin huolellinen vedostaessani, ja näistäkin kahdesta Pispala-linopiirroksesta jäi vahingossa sapluuna laittamatta kuumailmapallolinoa varten. Mutta tämän uuden linopiirroksen tikasta voi vedostaa tilalle, eikä taustalla oleva aallokko häiritse kun tikalla on tummat siivet. Linnun pää ja maha on väritetty punaiseksi. Näiden kuvien koko on 30 x 80 cm tai 90 x 20 cm - aika vänkä koko erikoisiin paikkoihin, rappujen viereen tai kaapin päälle.

I really am not very careful when printing, and I accidentally left out the stencil for a hot air balloon linocut. But this new linocut of a woodpecker can be printed instead, and the waves in the background are not so visible through the bird with dark wings. The head and belly of the bird are coloured red. The size of these pictures is either 30 x 80 cm or 90 x 20 cm - quite a playful size for special places, beside steps or over a cupboard. 

PISPALAN TIKKA / WOODPECKER OF PISPALA

Muutamaan isohkoon Pispala-aiheiseen linopiirrokseen unohdin vedostusvaiheessa laittaa sapluunan saadakseni aikaan tyhjän paikan myöhemmin vedostettavalle kuumailmapallolle. Virittelinkin kuumailmapallon tilalle lintua, jossa olisi aika paljon mustaa, ja saisin peitetyksi yksivärisellä muodolla alla olevat järven aallot. Tein linopiirroksen tikasta, jonka pään ja vatsan väritin punaiseksi. Aika hyvin tämä lintuhahmo peittää taustalla olevat aaltokuviot. Ja minä kun olin heittämässä näitä "epäonnistuneita" pohjia roskiin! Tämän ison koko on 60 x 100 cm.

I forgot to put a stencil on a couple quite large linocuts of Pispala in order to get an empty place for printing later there the hot air balloon. So I envisioned in the place of the hot air balloon a bird, which had rather a lot of black, and so I could cover with this monochrome shape the underlying waves of the lake. I made a linocut of a woodpecker and coloured the head and belly red. This shape is covering quite good the waves underneath in the background. And I was already binning these "unsuccessful" pictures! The size of this big one is 60 x 100 cm.

TIKKOJA / WOODPECKERS

 Pari uutta linopiirroslintua ovat tikkoja. Kaksi tikkaa lentävät eri suuntiin ja yhdellä tikalla on kaiverrettuna sulkia siivissä. Tavoittelin aika pelkistettyä muotoa. Tikkojen päälaet ja vatsat on väritetty punaisiksi. Näiden lintujen koko on noin 10 x 15 cm.

A couple new linocuts of birds are woodpeckers. Two woodpeckers are flying at the opposite directions, and one woodpecker has carved feathers on his wings. I was aiming to a quite reduced shapes. The heads and stomachs of the birds are coloured red. The size of these birds is about 10 x 15 cm.

 Kello viiden tee! Käkikello lyö juuri viisi ja käki tulee ulos talostaan. Tyttö nousee varpailleen ja ojentaa linnulle kupposen teetä. Kissalla on oma maitolautanen. Parille nukelle ja tytölle on pöydällä teekannu, kupit ja kakku valmiina. Tämä söpö ja herttainen kuva on englantilaisen Inez Tophamin (1885-1959) kuvitus vuodelta 1926.

Five o´clock tee! The cuckoo clock just strikes five and the cuckoo comes out of his house. The girl is raising up on her toes and is serving a cup of tee to the bird. The cat has her own platter of milk. A couple of dolls and girl have their tee pot, cups and a cake ready on the table. This cute and sweet picture is an illustration by English Inez Topham (1885-1959) from the year 1926.

SULKIA / FEATHERS

Viimeisinä tällä erää vedostin sarjaani linopiirroksista monorinteillä sulkia. Tämä ei varmasti ole viimeinen kerta kun sotken työhuoneeni monoprinteillä, väreillä, kasvien lehdillä, pitsinpaloilla ja muulla tykötarpeella. Näissä monoprintit on töpsötelty sienenpaloilla. Koko on tuttu 21 x 21 cm linopiirroskehyksineen.

Lastly for now I printed linocut feathers for my series of linocuts on monoprints. This is surely not the last time when I mess up my studio with monoprints, colours, plant leves, pieces of lace and other paraphernalia. In these the backgrouns was dabbed with a piece of sponge. The size is as earlier 21 x 21 cm with linocut frames.

KAKSI KISSAA / TWO CATS

 

Kaksi kissaa ovat selvästi kavereita. Ne kietovat jopa häntänsä yhteen. Kissat ovat linopiirros ja tausta on monoprintti. Kaksi erilaista kehystä ovat linopiirroksia, joita ole vedostanut joko mustina tai pronssinvärisinä. Kuvan koko kehyksineen on 21 x 21 cm.

These two cats are clearly friends. They even tangle their tails together. The cats is a linocut and the background is a monoprint. Two different borders are also linocuts, and I have printed them either black or bronze. The size of the picture with its frame is 21 x 21 cm.

LENTÄVÄ KISSA / FLYING CAT

 Lentävissä linokissoista kokeilin kahdenlaisia monoprint-taustoja. Parissa taustana on iso punainen lehti. Parissa vedostin kissalle sapluunalla varattuun tyhjään tilaan sapluunalla punertavaa väriä. Monoprintit herättävät kokeilunhaluja ja sotkua syntyy.

With these flying linocut cats I experimented two different ways to make backgrounds. Couple of them have a big red leaf in the background. In couple of them I printed reddish colour with a stencil on an empty place I reserved with a stencil for the cat. Monoprints arouse desire to experiment, and there will be some mess.

HYPPIVÄ KISSA / JUMPING CAT

 Kissa hyppii innoissaan, levittää kätensä ilmaan ja näyttää hiukan hölmöltä. Näin kissat tekevät kun ne yrittävät hiukan leikillään pelotella toisia kissoja tai ihmisiä. Tämä on kissanleikkiä. Minua ei häiritse, että linopiirrosakissojen vedostus monoprint-taustalleen ei ihan kohdistu juuri siihen tilaan, joka kissalle on printtiin jätetty sapluunan avulla. Rouheus saa näkyä!

A cat is jumping excited, spreading her arm in the air and lookin a bit goofy. This is what cats are doing when they try to scare other cats or humans perhaps a bit jokingly. This is cat´s play. It  bothers me not at all, that printings of linocut cats on their monoprint background is not quite accurately on the place which was left for the cat with a stencil. Some roughness can be visible!

Ranskalaisen naivistin Jean Carraun (1920-1996) maalauksessa Bistro Chez Suzie on jotain yhtäläisyyttä Edouard Monetin suureen maalaukseen Folies-Bergéren baari. Carraun versio on hauskalla tavalla simppelimpi ja taustan vaikeasti tulkittava peili on vaihtunut pullohyllyyn. Vasemmassa yläkulmassa on Carraulle tyypillinen piippua polttava merimies, ja savu tuntuu tupruavan ulos taulusta. Oikeassa yläkulmassa on laivataulu. Tiskillä savuaa tupakka kun Suxie kysyy: "Mitä saisi olla?" Musta kissa tassut tiskillä näyttää hiukan kauhistuneelta - miksi?

In this paining by French naïve artist Jean Carrau (1920-1996) there is some similarities with Edouard Monet´s huge painting of the bar of Folies Bergére. Carrau´s version is in a funny way more simple and the mirror in the back which is very difficult to paint has been changed to shelves of bottles. In the left upper corner there is for Carrau very typical seaman smoking a pipe, and the smoke seems to be puffing out of the painting. On the upper right corner there is a painting of a ship. A cigarette is fuming on the desk when Suzie is asking: "What shall it be?" A black cat with paws on the desk seems to be a bit terrified - why?
