KALAT UIMAAN / FISH GO SWIMMING

 Kalat hakevat paikkaansa rantavedessä. Yksi sudenkorentokin on lentämässä aika lähellä hyppäävää kalaa. Tähän tarvitaan aika paljon lisää linopiirroskaloja, sillä pastellivedessä on tilaa. Kuvan leveys on 80 cm.

The fish are looking for their place in the beach water. One dragonfly is also flying quite close to the jumping fish. A lot more linocut fish are needed for this, because there is room in the pastel water. The width of the picture is 80 cm.

C. Amyotin litografia vuodelta 1910 mainostaa "Tit-Bits" -lehteä, joka oli varhainen suosittu miestenlehti. Vapaahetkellään marmoriportaissa työläispoika esiliinassaan lukee Tit-Bitsiä nauraen ääneen. Kissa on käyttänyt hyväksi tilanteen ja varastanut pihvin, joka nyt maistuu hyvältä. Kuvan värit ovat kauniin pastelliset, sama vihreä toistuu Tit-Bitsin kannessa ja ylhäällä olevassa ovessa. Marmoriportaiden varjot muodostavat kauniin kuvion.

A 1910 lithograph by C. Amyot  is advertising 'Tit-Bits', an early popular men's magazine. In his free time, on the marble stairs, a working boy in his apron reads Tit-Bits while laughing out loud. The cat has taken advantage of the situation and stolen a  steak, which now tastes good. The colors of the picture are beautifully pastel, the same green is repeated on the cover of Tit-Bits and on the door at the top. The shadows of the marble stairs form a beautiful pattern.

PASTELLIVETTÄ KALOILLE / PASTEL WATER FOR THE FISH

 Rantavesi alkaa virrata pastellivärein. Jätin veden päälle hyppäävälle linopiirrokselle kalasta tilaa veteen. Yksi sudenkorento linopiirroksena aikoo myös lentää rantaveden ylle. Alhaalla kivikossa on myös vedostusta odottamassa pieni linopiirros simpukankuoresta. Näin ison (kuvan leveys on 80 cm) veden teko alussa tuntuu ihan mahdottomalta, mutta taitaa se siitä tulla joskus valmiiksikin.

The beach water starts to flow in pastel colors. I left space for the linocut of a fish jumping on the water. One dragonfly as a linocut is also going to fly over the beach water. Down on the rocks, there is also a small linocut of a seashell waiting to be printed. Making such a big (the width of the picture is 80 cm) water seems impossible at the beginning, but I think it will eventually be completed.

KALAT VEDESSÄ / FISH IN THE WATER

 

Linopiirros kalasta pitää vedostaa niin, että vain kalan pää on veden yläpuolella. Silloin renkaat kalan ympärillä näyttävät olevan veden pinnassa. Lisäsin tähän kokeiluun koristepaperilla pieniä linokaloja ja sudenkorennon. Kokeilin myös niin, että hiukan enemmän kalan päätä on veden yläpuolella - ei toimi.

The linocut of the fish must be printed so that only the head of the fish is above the water. Then the rings around the fish appear to be on the surface of the water. I added small lino fish and a dragonfly to this experiment with decorative paper. I also tried so that a little more of the fish's head is above the water - doesn't work.

KALA VEDESSÄ / FISH IN THE WATER

Tarvitsin uuteen aika isoon rantaveteen kalan. Ajattelin, että se olisi ikäänkuin pää hiukan veden yläpuolella, kuin kurkkimassa jotain. Vesi muodostaisi renkaita sen ympärille. Siispä kaiversin kalan linopiirroksena. Sitten kokeilin kalan vedostusta nepalilaiselle koristepaperille, jota löytyi varastostani (joskun ostettu Tallinnasta Zelluloos-kaupasta). Yhdistin kaksi eri väristäpaperia, toinen ikään kuin veden alla ja yläpuolella. Testailin, miten kala pitäisi tuohon vedenrajaan vedostaa. Ensimmäinen kokeilu ei oikein onnistunut niin, että kalasta on aika iso osa veden päällä. Ei, vaikka lisäsin muutaman linopiirroksen pienistä kaloista ja sudenkorennoista. Kala tuntuu leijuvan. Jatkan siis kokeilua.

I needed a fish for a new fairly large beach water. I thought it was as if its head was slightly above water, as if peeking at something. The water would form rings around it. So I carved the fish as a linocut. Then I tried printing the fish on Nepalese decorative paper that I found in my stash (sometimes bought in Tallinn at the Zelluloos shop). I combined two different colored papers, one as if under water and one above. I tested how the fish should be printed to that water line. The first experiment didn't quite work out, so that quite a large part of the fish is on top of the water. Even though I added linocuts of dragonflies and small fish. The fish seems to be floating. So I will continue experimenting.

PALA KAISLIKKOA / A PIECE OF REED

 Leveään Pispalan harju ja Tahmelan rannan kynäjalava -linopiirrrokseeni ajattelin lisätä vettä alapuolelle. Mutta rannassa on pari venettä, joista näkyy kuvassa vain puolet. Eihän se onnistu! Ratkaisin asian tekemällä veden rajaan uuden pienen linopalan, jossa on kaislikkoa. Saa nähdä, onnistuuko veden lisääminen rantaan tällä keinolla.

I thought of adding water to my wide Pispala ridge and Tahmela beach elm linocut. But there are a couple of boats on the beach, only half of which can be seen in the picture. It won't work! I solved it by making a new small piece of lino with reeds at the water's edge. We'll see if it's possible to add water to the beach with this method.

Joan Freestonen "Alex" on musta kissahurmuri. Turkki kiiltää silkkisenä, kuin juuri kammattuna. Kaulassa on hopeinen ketju. Kirkkaan keltaiset silmät tarkkailevat jotain taustalla tapahtuvaa, korvat valppaana pystyssä. Alexin ympärillä leviää pehmeä nurmikko, suuri mehikasvi kasvaa isossa koristeellisessa betoniruukussa, pensaat kukkivat ja kaukana takana näkyy kaaiportti, ehkä jonku ison kartanon puutarhan muuri. Alex taitaa edustaa yläluokkaa.

"Alex" by Joan Freestone is a black cat charmer. The fur shines silky, as if it had just been combed. There is a silver chain around the neck. The bright yellow eyes are watching something going on in the background, the ears are alert. A soft lawn spreads around Alex, a large succulent plant grows in a large decorative concrete pot, the bushes are blooming and far behind you can see a gate, perhaps the garden wall of some big mansion. I guess Alex represents upper class.

YLI RAJAN / OVER THE BORDER

 

Taivaasta tuli nyt vaaleampi, ainakin hiukan ja sinisen ja punaisen värin raja on häilyvämpi. Tähän nyt taidan olla tyytyväinen. Tämä sekatekniikkatyö on aika iso, 100 x 80 cm. Ja yhtä suuria tai suurempiakin voi olla tulossa. Hankin vanerinpalan työpöytäni päälle, joten kokoa alustalle nyt riittää, ja uusi työhuoneenikin on entistä isompi, Nähtävästi tila ympärillä houkuttaa tekemään isompia töitä. Alaosassa on Pispalan rinne ja Tahmelan rannan kynöjalava linopiirroksena. Myös linnut ja kuu ovat linopiirroksia. Taivas on tehty pehmeillä pastelleilla. Löysin tälle kuvalle osuvan nimen Luice Leskinen laulusta Tampereen aamu: "Liukunut olen yli rajan . Istun kahviloissa ohi sulkemisajan".

The sky became lighter now, at least a little, and the border between blue and red sky is more blurred. I think I'm satisfied with this now. This mixed media work is quite large, 100 x 80 cm. And just as big or even bigger ones may be coming. I got a piece of plywood on top of my desk, so now I have enough space for the platform, and my new work room is biggerhan earlier one. Apparently, the space around is tempting to do bigger works. In the lower part, there is the ridge of Pispala and the elm of Tahmela beach as a linocut. The birds and the moon are also linocuts. The sky is made with soft pastels. I found a name that fits this picture, from Luice Leskinen´s the song Morning in Tampere: "I've slipped over the border. I'm sitting in cafes past closing time".

PUNAINEN TAIVAS / RED SKY

 

Nyt on punaista pastellia taivaalla. Mallina oli kaunis auringonlasku joku aika sitten. Sain kuvan siitä kännykkään. Mutta tässä kuvassa taivas on mielestäni liian tumma ja punainen, melkein pelottava. Siispä aion vallentaa sitä hiukan. Ja tuo raja sinisen ja punaisen taivaan välillä pitää sekin mielestäni liukuvampi, ei noin jyrkkä.

Now there is red pastel in the sky. The model was a beautiful sunset some time ago. I got a picture of it on my cell phone. But in this picture, I think the sky is too dark and red, almost scary. So I'm going to expand on it a bit. And that border between the blue and red sky also should be smoother, not so sharp, in my opinion.

VÄRIÄ JA LISÄÄ LINTUJA TAIVAALLE / COLOUR AND MORE BIRDS TO THE SKY

 

Väritin vaalean sinertäväksi sen kuvan kulman, jossa linopiirrokset linnuista jo olivat. LIsäsin malliksi myös lisää pienempiä linolintuja. Muu osa taivaasta on miele4ssäni aika punainen. Nyt se näyttää ihan onnettomalta! Pitää vaan uskoa, että edistystäkin vielä tulee.

I colored the corner of the picture where the linocuts of the birds were already light bluish. I also added more smaller lino birds as a model. The rest of the sky is quite red in my mind. Now it looks quite unhappy! You just have to believe that there will still be progress.
