RA : STANLEY ANDERSON & Rubens and His Legacy

Lontoon Royal Academy of Artsin näyttely Stanley Andersonin (1884-1966) grafiikasta oli mahtava kokemus. Useimmat työt olivat etsauksia, ja niiden tekemiseen on varmasti kulunut jokunen tovi. Piirrosjälki oli tarkkaa, sävyt olivat herkullisia ja ne aiheet! Anderson omisti ison osan ajastaan Englannin katoavien ammattien, töiden, maisemien ja rakennusten kuvaamiseen.Hänen etsauksissaan tehdään monenlaisia töitä, kynnetään, keritään lampaita, korjataan viljaa, veistetään tuoleja, taotaan rautaa tai punotaan koreja. Mainioita ovat Lontoon asukkaita kuvaavat etsaukset markkinoilta, katujen kulmista, taidemuseoista tai lukemassa kirjastoissa. Kuvissa on nostalginen ja hiukan haikea sävy. Anderson halusi grafiikallaan nöyrästi kunnioittaa käsityötä ja ihmisyyttä.

RA:n päänäyttelyssä tajusin, etten todellakaan pidä Rubensista. Vaikka näyttelyssä oli kyllä suurin osa maalauksista Rubensin aikalaisten, hänestä vaikutteita saaneiden tai antaneiden taiteilijoiden töitä. Rubensin suuressa tiikerinmetsästys-taulussa kissapetojen turkkien viiva- ja pilkkukuviot on hienosti tehty. Kaksi näin päinvastaista näyttelyä ei oikein sovi samaan museoon: nöyrää ja pöyhkeilevää.

The exhibition of Stanley Anderson´s (1884-1966) graphic works in the Royal Academy of Arts in London was an awesome experience. Most of the works were etchings, and to make them has surely taken a while. The marking of drawing was precise, the shadings were delicious and those subjects! Anderson dedicated most of his time to depicting of old English vanishing crafts, work, landscapes and buildings. In his etchings there are many different manual occupations, plowing, shearing sheep, harvesting, sculpting chair, forging iron or weaving baskets. Especially wonderful are the etchings of the inhabitants of London in the markets, on the street corners, in art museums or reading in the libraries. There is a nostalgic and plaintive tone in the pictures. Anderson wanted humbly with his graphics to honour the manual labour and humanity. 

In RA´s main exhibition I realized that I really don`t like Rubens. Even though the biggest part of the exhibition was paintings by the contemporaries of Rubens or artists who affected him or were affected by him. In the vast painting of tiger hunting the stripes and spots of the feline beasts were nicely done. Two so opposite exhibitions don´t quite match together in the same museum: humble and pompous.
