Lontoon Barbicanissa hurmaa iso joka suuntaan pursuileva näyttely Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector (Mahtavat päähänpinttymät: Taiteilija keräilijänä). Mitä kaikkea taiteilijat keräilevätkään! Jollekin keräilyn kohde ovat silkkihuivit, jollekin täytetyt epämuodostuneet eläimet, jollekin lelut ja jollekin kaikki mahdollinen kuten Andy Warholille. Näyttelyssä on mukana taiteilijoiden keräämiä esineitä ja myös pieni otos heidän tuotannostaan. Selvästi havaitseekin, että usein taitelijan keräämät tavarat ovat jotenkin vaikuttaneet hänen töihinsä, aiheisiinsa tai töiden tekotapoihin. Näyttely on täynnä yllätyksiä: ai tällaisista vaikutteista siis ovat syntyneet tällaiset työt! Eniten minuun vaikuttivat Edmund De Waalin perimä netsuke-kokoelma, sillä pari vuotta sitä käsittelevä De Waalin kirja (The Hare with Amber Eyes / Meripihkasilmäinen jänis) oli mieleenpainuva. Nyt näin, miltä tuo jänis-netsuke oikein näyttää. Samalla voi ihailla

De Waalin omaa keramiikkaa, jossa on selvästi myös jotain japanilaista vaikutusta. Useissa näyttelyissä olen ihaillut Martin Parrin usein postikorttimaisen värikkäitä valokuvia uimarannoilta. Nyt sain ihastella myös hänen postikorttikokoelmaansa, jossa yhtenä osana ovat hauskat venäläiset Sputnik- ja Laika-koira-aiheiset postikortit. Tämä näyttely sai ihastumaan, kauhistumaan, ihmettelemään ja innostumaan.

London. And what do the artists really collect! Some are obsessed by silk scarves, some by stuffed deformed animals, some by toys and some by anything possible like Andy Warhol. In this exhibition there are objects collected by artists and also a small extract of their art work. You can easily detect, that the collected objects have somehow affected their work, topics or their way to work. The exhibition is full of surprises: oh, this is how or why have all his or hers art work done. Mostly I was impressed by Edmund De Waal´s inherited collection of netsukes, because his book about these (The Hare with Amber Eyes) was memorable. Now I saw how this hare really looked like. At the same time I could admire De Waal´s own ceramics, which clearly had a lot of influence from Japan. In many exhibitions I have been fascinated by Martin Parr´s often

bright and postcard-like photographs of people on beaches. Now I could admire also his collection of postcards, which included fanciful cards of Russian spaceships and Laika the dog. This exhibition made me delighted, frightened, wondering and
excited.
