TOMMI TOIJA - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Tommi Toijan (s. 1974) pienet pojat ovat valloittaneet  Amos Andrsonin taidemuseon näyttelyssään Mutatis Mutandis. Keramiikasta ja muistakin aineista muovailtuja hahmoja on kymmeniä. Ne seisovat lattialla ryhmissä kuulumatta yhteen, tai ne ovat kääntäneet selkänsä muille tai joutuneet yksin nurkkaan. Lisäksi seinillä on kymmeniä pikkumiesten päitä. Videolla Toija kertoo sotkuisessa studiossaan, ettei hän oikeastaan osaa keksiä muuta kuin näitä pieniä surkeita hahmojaan. Eihän muuta tarvitsekaan! Nämä pienet suuripäiset ja suurisilmäiset  ihmisen alut ovat samalla hellyyttäviä ja karmeita, groteskejakin. Aikuisia ne tuntuvat pelottavan, mutta lapset niitä rakastavat. Poikien päistä on muovailtu suihkulähdekin, jossa koristeina on lisäksi pääkalloja ja luita. Aiemmin nämä Toijan pienet pojat ovat olleet herttaisempia, nyt osa on pahasti epämuodostuneita, monipäisiä hirviöitä, joiden rinnuksille veri valuu suusta. Minusta ne nyt ovat yhtä pelottavia kuin kauhuelokuvat tai -sarjakuvat.

Tommi Toija´s (b. 1974) small boys have taken over Amos Anderson Art Museum in their exhibition Mutatis Mutandis. There are tens of figures sculpted of ceramic or other materials. They are standing on the floor without belonging together, they have turned their back to the others or they have been put in the corner alone. In addition on the walls there are dozens of heads of these small men. On the video Toija tells in his messy studio, that he really can not create anything else than these small pathetic characters. These big-headed and huge eyed small humans are at the same time cute and spooky, even grotesque. Adults seem to be afraid of them, but children love them. There is even a fountain sculpted of heads of the boys ornamented with skulls and bones. Earlier these Toija´s boys have been more sweet, now part of them are badly deformed, many-headed monsters that have blood oozing on their chest from their mouth. I think they are just as frightening as horror movies and comics.
