HAIHARAN TAIDEKESKUS 2021 / HAIHARA ART CENTRE 2021

We still managed to visit Haihara Art Centre`s summer 2021 exhibition at these pandemic times. At the Barn (Talli) there was a nice exhibition by Pirkka-Hämeen Kuvataiteilijat group. The hanging was airy and beautiful, this exhibition left a good feeling. I also found some familiar artists, Sirkkaliisa Virtanen, Hannu Hirsivuori and Jeroma Tabell. I found also some new names and interesting techniques, Emmi Vuorinen´s aquatint/etchings, Jarmo Lehto´s acrylic putty and paint on old paint brushes and Marketta Lehtonen´s raku ceramics. In the main building there was a varied collection quite different works, I have earlier admired Hannamari Matikainen´s and Viggo Wallensköld´s works, and so also now.

VIGGO WALLENSKÖLD - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION
***********
Viggo Wallensköld´s (s. 1969) art exhibition at Haihara manor is partly quite distressing. It feels, that the basis for this exhibition has been a stack of old photographs. Some of the photos are like group photos taken in a photographer´s studio. But part of the pictures are from some kind of freak show, women and children without feet or hands. It is really hard to watch their begging eyes. And then there is a group of portraits where there is some kind of machine as the body of a person. The painting technique is beautiful, definite, colours are different shades of gray and serene. And of course it is almost luxurious to visit a real art exhibition after a long Corona break. But the feeling after the exhibition is confused.

VIGGO WALLENSKÖLD - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION
Hämeenlinna Art Museum`s exhibition of Viggo Wallensköld´s (b. 1969) paintings is a thought-provoking experience. Behind the pictures there is clearly a story, but the viewer does not know what it is. The pictures remain mysterious. Part of pictures are not easy to watch: hermaphrodites, female torsos without hands or legs, often young girls. In some pictures there is a lamp or a sculpture on the table, but the bust seems to be living, and why there is sometimes an electrical outlet? Some of the pictures depict women watching a stagnant landscape out of a window seen from behind. In one of these window pictures a girl is sitting on a chair, and when you inspect a little closer she seems to have no legs. The atmosphere in the pictures is very private, isolated and glum. The colours are beautifully gray, stylish. You can sincerely admire the marks of the brush. The year 2013 has been very busy for Wallensköld, the paintings from last year fill the whole downstairs floor of the museum. In many of the pictures there is a huge dress and a small withered-looking head - that reminds me of a butterfly caterpillar. Upstairs there are also older works, even a few group pictures depicting the 1918 Russian revolution.

This art exhibition was quite an experiense. Series of paintings by Viggo Wallensköld (b. 1969) about the murder of Russia´s last tsar Nikolai II and his family was on view in Lenin-museum in Tampere. The paintings formed a wild contrast to Lenin Museums traditional exhibition of b/w photographs and newspaper clippings in glass vitrines. Wallensköld´s paintings were among the museum exhibition and some of the paintings were almost hard to spot.
The murder of the tsarist family at the time of Russian revolution reflects in the paintings as ghostly faceless threat, shadows, bloodmarks, resignation and heroism. In the names of the paintings there are: hero, victim. The figures in the paintings are partly faceless, fragile, powerless and somehow transparent pale shapes on a dark background. The contrast is very abrupt to Lenin Museum´s evironment that is naturally idealizing Russia´s 1918 revolution with paintings and sculptures about Lenin and Marx.
These paintings by Wallensköld were whole human beings facing the viewer. Paintings by Wallensköld that I have seen before have been more startling: bearded women, crippled and deformed faceless figures or backs of peole.
