Visiting London I also visited a finely assembled exhibition of an icon from Manchester - LS Lowry´s (1887-1976) paintings. He has been branded with many different style stamps. The paintings really are multi-leveled. Lowry has been regarded as an interpreter of the English industrial revolution, and most of the paintings depict the urban industrial scenes around Manchester as their ugliest, grayness, gloom, smokes of the factories and depressed looking workers. Especially at the end of the exhibition in the large panoramas these industrial scenes are as their sharpest. Some see Lowry as a naïve or primitive painter because of the matchstick men, meticulously painted houses and the distorted perspective. Also his liking of dramatic events and crowds (football matches, coming of an ambulance, funerals, political speeches) may refer to the naïvism. In addition Lowry was some kind of amateur painter: he made his daytime job as a rent collector and painted only in the evenings and weekends. In some landscapes without people you can see and feel even surrealism or symbolism. It is astonishing that Lowry´s frame of reference seems to be in French late impressionism. This exhibition was moving, the atmosphere of the paintings was desperate and threatening, humble and striking. Lowry was clearly a lonely outside observer.

LS LOWRY -NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION
Käydessäni Lontoossa Tate Britainissa oli hyvin koottu näyttely Manchesterin ikonin LS Lowryn (1887-1976) maalauksista. Häneen on lyöty monenlaisia tyylileimoja. Maalaukset ovatkin monitasoisia.
