COLLECTING GAUGUIN -näyttely / Exhibition

Collecting Gauguin -näyttely Lontoossa Courtauld-galleriassa esittelee Britannian parasta Paul Gauguinin (1848-1903) teosten kokoelmaansa. Teokset kokosi 1920-luvulla taidekeräilijä Samuel Courtauld, kuten myös monet muut Gourtauldissa olevat impressionistien maalaukset. Tietenkin Tahiti-aiheet ovat upeita, värit lämpimiä ja pehmeitä. Samoin aika kauan jaksaa ihailla Martinique-maisemaa mestarillisine siveltimenvetoineen. Mutta tämän näyttelyn erikoisuus ovat Gauguinin puupiirrokset. Voi vain ihmetellä mustavalkoisten puupiirrosten sävyjä. Gauguin käsitteli puuta ihan omalla tyylillään: raapimalla partakoneen terällä, santapaperilla, neuloilla, hakkaamalla ja kaivertamalla. On melkein ihme, että tällaisista puulevyistä on pystytty vedostamaan monisävyiset kuvat paperille.

Collecting Gauguin Exhibition in London in The Courtauld Gallery represents UK´s most important collection of Paul Gauguin´s (1848-1903) works. This collection was assembled by an art collector Samuel Courtauld in the 1920`s, and so are many other Impressionist paintings in The Courtauld Gallery. The Tahitian paintings are, of courcee, brilliant with warm and soft colours. Similarly you can admire quite a long time the Martinique landscape and it´s masterly brush strokes. But the specialty of this exhibition are Gauguin´s woodcuts. You can only wonder the nuances of the black and white woodcuts. Gauguin handled wood in his very own way: scratching with a razor blade, with needles, hacking and engraving. It is almost a wonder, that you could pull these multi-toned pictures on a paper from these wood blocks.
