*****************
I still managed to visit in time the 40th Anniversary exhibition of Photographic Centre and Gallery Nykyaika, put together or curated by Petri Nuutinen and Marja Pirilä. The idea of the exhibition: ten participating photographers have each selected two of their own photos, one from the beginning of their career and one of nowadays. The development of many of them has been tremendous. So I was more interested in the photos of today or with Marja Pirilä actually her installation. She had build many Camera Obscura lenses inside a huge cloth cupboard, and you could see through them the opposite street. Petri Nuutinen´s polygonal photos made on metallic boards are wild, like a staircase from Cuba. Veli Garnö´s photo of his son at the grave of Eugen Schauman is touching, and Riitta Päiväläinen´s landscape is enchanting. What an interesting exhibition!

PETRI NUUTINEN - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION
*************
December's exhibition at The Photographic Center Nykyaika is a group exhibition of four very different artists: "Finland100 - Pirkanmaa Yestreday and Today". The best in this exhibition is Petri Nuutinen's large wall of large photographs. The subject is the building of the tram trails, which has messed up the whole center of Tampere. The aim is to continue this documentation project for the next four and a half years. The pictures are pigment prints on Baryta paper, and it is really hard to recognize my home town from these scenes. There is chaos, trash, mess everywhere - but still there is something eternal and serene is the photos. And there are no humans - perhaps the photos were taken at a summer night. This is now the situation!

NYKYAIKA 30 - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

| Marja Pirilä & Petri Nuutinen: Camera obscura |
Photographic Centre Nykyaika´s Jubilee exhibition (30 years) is in TR1 Art Hall in Tampere. Especially Backlight Triennals by Nykyaika have stuck in my mind. I saw Martin Parr´s photographs for the first time in Backlight Triennal and it was quite an experience: you can photograph the ordinary everyday life and even make it even.
Marja Pirilän ja Petri Nuutisen tietosanakirjapinoon rakennettu camera obscura ilahduttaa. Rakennelma on kaunis ja kirjojen väri jotenkin historiallisen juhlava. Petri Nuutisen vedostamat A.R. Helaakosken (1858-1945) valokuvat ovat rauhallisia ja sävykkäitä. Kuvien yhteydessä on kaukoputki, jolla näkee yhden kuvan kiviröykkiön keskellä ihmisen. Tätä kuvaa katsoo ihan uudella tavalla. Kekseliästä!

| Lasse Lecklin |
Lasse Lecklin´s photographs of desolate, nocturnal gas stations from all over the world are surprisingly beautiful and lyrical.
Harmi!
The rest of the exhibition is quite depressing: "stones" glued from photographs on the floor, a closed wooden hut (you can see part of the pictures from the balcony), small out of focus photos in class frames all over the place, negatives decaying after a water damage, stones and twigs wrapped in foil, pixel pictures from TV and clumsy videos. Often the curators who have compiled the exhibition want to say more than the artists. Perhaps the meaning is to fell fences between different visual art forms: photograph, sculpture, painting and motion picture. Or maybe this exhibition is a statement to the imagined down hill of the photography or Nykyaika - the exhibition is suitably named "On the Ruins of Nykyaika" or "On the Ruins of the Modern Times". Well, the result is incoherent, confusing, indigestible and pretentious. What a pity!
