ISO KORENTO: 6 / LARGE DRAGONFLY: Six

Kuudes työ, jossa yhdistelin linopiirroksia ja monoprinttejä on ukonkorento ruskehtavalla monoprint-pohjalla. Osa korentoa ympäröivistä lehdistä on monoprinttejä, osa linopiirroksia, samoin pari sulkaa. Korennon siipiin lisäsin käsin hiukan keltaisia ja hopeanvärisiä pilkkuja. Koko edelleen: 40 x 40 cm.

Sixth work combining monoprints and linocuts is a dragonfly on brownish monoprint background. Some of the leaves circling around the dragonfly are monoprints and some linocuts as are two feathers. I added some yellow and silvery spots on the wings of the dragonfly. Size still: 40 x 40 cm.

Viides iso ukonkorento on vihreällä monoprint-pohjalla. Ympärillä on lehtiä monoprintteinä ja sulkia linopiirroksina. Korento on käsin  väritetty linopiirros. Tämänkin työn koko on 40 x 40 cm.

Fifth large dragonfly is the one on the green monoprint background. Monoprint leaves and linocut feathers are circling round. The dragonfly is a hand coloured linocut. This work is also sized 40 x 40 cm.

LASKIAISPULLA / BUN

 

Laskiainen jo meni, mutta laskiaispulla jäi. Tässä pienessä (15 x 15 cm) linopiirroksessa kissa kurkottaa kohti isoa laskiaispullaa, jossa on kermavaahtoa sisällä ja sokeria päällä.

Shrove Tuesday is already gone but the bun is left. In this small (15 x 15 cm) linocut there is a cat reaching out towards a big Shrovetide bun with whipped cream in between and sugar on top.

Susan Herbertin (1945-2014) sarjassa taidehistorian merkkiteoksia on nyt vuorossa Sir John Everett Millaisin prerafaeliittinen maalaus Ophelia (1850-1851). Herbert on ottanut alkuperäisestä teoksesta vain osan, tai ainakin tässä kortissa on isosta maalauksesta yksityiskohta. Kissa kelluu lammessa kukkakimppu kädessään. Tämä kissa ei kyllä näytä olevan mitenkään epätoivoinen, huulilla karehtii hymy ja silmät ovat unelmoivat. Tässä ollaan vain aamu-uinnilla. Millaisin dramaattisen maalauksen aiheena on Shakespearen Hamletin ja Ofelian onneton rakkaustarina. Ofelia oli kiivennyt puuhun puron varrella, oksa oli katkennut ja Ofelia oli hukkunut. Millaisin maalauksessa Ofelia on kuollut. Ehkä tämä Herbertin versio aiheesta ei ole ihan uskollinen tulkinta alkuperäisestä tekstistä tai maalauksesta.

In her series of famous paintings of the history of art now is in turn Susan Herbert`s (1945-2014) interpretation of Sir John Everett Millais` pre-Raphaelite painting Ophelia (1850-1851). Herbert has taken only a part of the original painting, or at least in this card there is a detail of the large original painting. A cat is floating in a pond with bunch of flowers in her hand. This cat seems not to be at all desperate, there is a hint of a smile on her lips and the eyes are dreamy. This is just a morning swim. The subject of Miilais' original painting is the unhappy love story between Hamlet and Ophelia in Shakespeare's play. Ophelia had climbed to a tree over a brook, the branch had snapped and Ofelia was drowned. In Millais' painting Ophelia is dead. Surely this Herbert's version of the original text or paintings is not quite a faithful interpretation.

Neljännessä isossa korennossa on keltainen tausta ja kolme kasvinlehteä monoprintteinä. Korento ja vihreät lehdet ovat linopiirroksia. Lopuksi korento on väritetty käsin. Tämänkin koko on 40 x 40 cm.

The fourth large dragonfly has the background and three leaves as monoprints. The dragonfly and green leaves are linocuts. Finally the dragonfly was hand coloured. This is also sized 40 x 40 cm.

RULLAKIOSKILLA / AT THE ROUND KIOSK

Rullakioski on väritetty käsin tässä linopiirroksessa, jotta se erottuisi paremmin taustastaan. Kioskin takana on Pispalan taloja ja pulteriaitaa, edessä on joukko kissoja ja penkki. Kioski mainostaa makkaraan, kahvia ja teetä. Tällaisia kioskeja oli 1950-luvulla useita. Nyt Tampereella taitaa olla enää yksi aseman edessä, ehkä myös Viinikassa. Linopiirroksen koko on 20 x 30 cm.

This linocut of a round kiosk is hand coloured, so that it would be more separated from the background. Behind the kiosk there are Pispala houses and stone wall, in front of kiosk there are some cats and a bench. The kiosk is advertising sausage, coffee and tea. These kind of kiosks were common in the 1950´s. Now there is perhaps only one left in Tampere in front of the railway station, and maybe there is one in Viinikka. The size of the linocut is 20 x 30 cm.

Rullakioski keskellä Pispalaa? En ole ollenkaan varma, onko Pispalassa koskaan edes ollut tällaista pyöreää kioskia. Tässä se nyt kuitenkin on pulteriaidan ympäröimänä. Näitä tekstejä oli haasteellista mutta hauskaa kaivertaa, sillä kirjaimet ovat kaiverrettuna peilikuvana. S- ja N-kirjaimet ovat vaikeimmat. Kioskin edessä on joukko nälkäisiä kissoja ja penkki.

A round kiosk in the middle of Pispala? I´m not at all sure if there even has ever been this kind of round kiosk in Pispala. Well, here it now is surrounded by a wall of round stones. These texts are a bit challenging but fun to carve, because the letters are as a mirror image when carved. S and N letter are the most difficult. There is a group of hungry cats and a bench in front of the kiosk.

 Martin Lemanin (s. 1934) kissakortti vuodelta 1985 on pöydällä seisovaa mallia. Kaksi mustavalkoista kissaa istuu vierekkäin punaisella matolla. Äiti ja pentu, sillä toinen on hiukan isompi? Vai kenties sisarukset? Molemmilla on samantapainen valkea kuvio kuonossa ja keltamustat silmät. Lemanin kissoille tyypillisesti nämä kissat tuijottavat suoraan katsojaa, ne eivät ehkä ole niitä kaikkein älykkäimpiä rotunsa edustajia, mutta hyvin itsetietoisia.

Martin Leman´s (b. 1934) cat card is from the year 1985 and a self standing model. Two black and white cats are sitting side by side on a red carpet. A mother and her kitten, because the other one is bigger? Or siblings? Both have a similar white pattern on their nose and yellow & black eyes. Typical for Leman these cats are staring straight at the viewer, maybe they are not the sharpest of their breed, but very self-conscious.

 Kolmas 40 x 40 cm kokoinen pyöreä ukonkorento on sinisellä monoprint -pohjalla. Muutama lehti kehyksessä ovat myös monoprinttejä. Käsin väritetty ukonkorento ja pienet linnut ovat linopiirroksia. Linnut lentävät nyt ulospäin korennosta, paitsi yksi vasemmalla ylhäällä tuli vahingossa väärin päin.

Third 40 x 40 cm sized round dragonfly is on a blue monoprint background. A few leaves on the border are also monoprints. The hand coloured dragonfly and small birds are linocuts. The birds are now flying away from the dragonfly, except on e on the upper left corner came wrong way round by accident.

Toinen sarjassa linopiirroksia ukonkorennoista ja monoprinttejä on kellanruskealla taustalla ja pienten lintujen ympäröimänä. Tausta ja kolme vihreää lehteä ovat monoprinttejä. Korento ja linnut ovat linopiirroksia. Ukonkorento on vielä viimeiseksi väritetty käsin. Koko on 40 x 40 cm.

Second in my series of linocuts of  dragonflies on monoprints is the one with a yellow & brown background surrounded by small birds. The background and three green leaves are monoprints. The dragonfly and birds are linocuts. The dragonfly was lastly hand coloured. The size id 40 x 40 cm.

Kissoja on käytetty paljon mainoksissa, mitä pienempi, suloisempi ja pörröisempi sitä parempi. Suklaa ja muut herkut ovat yleensä kissojen mainostamia, mutta tässä kuvassa kissanpoika kehuu Aspasia-saippuaa. Hiukan vaikea on ymmärtää, mikä yhdistää saippuan ja yleensä vettä kammoavan kissan. Ehkä Aspasiassa oleva kokomaito on se juttu nyt.

Cats are popular in ad

s, the smaller, cuter and fluffier the better. Cats are usually advertising chocolate and other sweets, but in this picture a kitten is praising Aspasia soap. It´s a bit difficult to grasp, what is uniting the soap and a cat, usually afraid of the water. Perhaps it is the whole milk that´s the clue here.

Uusi sarja ukonkorennoista ja monoprinteistä on aiempia suurempi: 30 x 30 cm. Kokeilen tässä sarjassa ukonkorennon taakse pyöreää monoprinttipohjaa ja korennon ympärille ikään kuin kehyksenä erilaisia monoprinttejä ja linopiirroksia. Tässä ensimmäisessä versiossa monoprittejä ovat saniaisen lehdet ja pala köynnöskasvia. Linopiirroksia ovat kaksi sulkaa ja oikean yläkulman saniaisen lehti sekä ukonkorento. Korento on viimeiseksi väritetty käsin.

A new series of dragonflies and monoprints is larger than earlier: 30 x 30 cm. I'm testing in this series a round monoprint at the background and diffrent monoprints and linocuts around the dragon fly like a kind of frame. In this firs version the fern leaves and a piece of a vine are monoprints. Feathers and the fern on the upper right corner are linocuts, and so is the dragonfly which is hand coloured lastly.

KISSA JA KOIRA / CAT AND DOG

Uusi linopiirros sarjaan pieniä 15 x 15 cm kuvia on Kissa ja koira. Erotatko heti koiran hahmon? Koira nukkuu, ja sitä on heti ehkä vaikea huomata. Mutta kissa vahtii eikä sitä nukuta ollenkaan. Koria ja tyynyjä oli kiva kaivertaa. Hankin uutta Awagami Bamboo -paperia, 170 g, ja tälle paperille vedostus onnistuu käsin vielä hyvin. Paperi ei ole liian paksua. Vedostan linon paperin sileämmälle puolelle.

A new linocut for my series of small 15 x 15 cm pictures is Cat and Dog. Do you see right away the shape of the dog? The dog is sleeping, and perhaps it is a bit difficult to see him immediately. But the cat is watching, and she is not sleepy at all. The basket and pillows were fun to carve. I bought new Awagami Bambou paper, 170 gr, and I can still manage to print on this paper by hand. The paper is not too heavy. I print the linocut on the smooth side of the paper.

Jane Crowther, englantilianen kuvittaja, on tavoittanut faaraoiden aikaisen tunnelman tässä kuvassaan "Egyptiläinen kissa". Musta ja hiukan hölmistyneen näköinen kissa tuntuu olevan kuin hautakammiossa ympärillään kaikki sinne kuuluvat ornamentit ja kuviot, tosin hiukan muunneltuina. Väriskaala on kaunis, paljon turkoosia ja kultaa, hyvin koristeellinen. Crowther on tehnyt paljon eläinaiheisia kuvituksia kuten alla oleva musta kissa romantiikan ajan kuvioissa.

Jane Crowther, English illustrator, has captured in this picture "Egyptian Cat" the atmosphere of ancient time of the pharaohs. A black an a bit stunned cat seems to be in a burial chamber all the appropriate ornaments and patterns around her, just a bit altered. The colour scale is beautiful, a lot of turquoise and gold, very decorative. Crowther has made a lot of animal themed illustrations like a black cat below in the patterns of Romantic era.
