Helsingissä Tennispalatsissa on mielenkiintoinen taidenäyttely Georgia O´Keeffen (1887-1986) elämästä ja tuotannosta. Näyttelyssä on valokuvia ja esineitä sekä hyvä video New Mexikon maataloista ja maisemista, joista O´Keeffe ammensi aiheita töihinsä.
Aiheet ovat usein kukkia ja maisemia, joissa muotona on tyypillisimmin taulun keskeltä halkova pystysuora vana: kalloja, kanjoneita ja rakennusten muotoja. Näitä muotoja tulkittiin vuosisadan alkupuolella seksuaalisiksi ehkä Freudin oppienkin innoittamina. O´Keeffe itse kiisti tällaiset tulkinnat ja totesi, että kukin saa nähdä hänen tauluissaan mitä haluaa. Itse hän vain sai aiheensa omasta lähipiiristään, luonnosta ja sen väreistä ja muodoista. Hänelle erityisen tärkeitä olivat New Mexikon tilojen lähellä olevat valkoinen ja musta kanjonimaisema ja erilaiset kasvit luonnossa.
O´Keeffe oli naimisissa valokuvaaja Alfred Stieglitzin kanssa, ja itsekin kiinnostunut valokuvauksesta, joten valokuvamainen muotokieli tuntuukin useissa töissä. Maalausten hienot, etenkin tummat värit ja orgaaniset muodot ovat iättömiä ja samalla heijastavat vuosisadan alun taidevirtauksia.
In Tennispalatsi, Helsinki there is an interesting exhibition about the life and art of Georgia O´Keeffe (1887-1986). There are photographs, objects, and a good video about the New Mexican ranches and landscapes that were the subjects of O´Keeffe`s paintings.
The subjects are often flowers and landscapes. It´s very typical that there is in the middle of the painting a vertical line: callas, canjonies and shapes of buildings. These shapes were interpreted at the beginning of 1900´s to be very sexual, perhaps inspired by Freud´s doctrines. O´Keeffe denied these interpretations and stated, that people can see in her paintings whatever they liked. She just took the subjects to her paintings from her own enviroment, from the nature and its shapes. The white and black canjon landscapes and different plants and flowers of the nature were expecially important to her.
O´Keeffe was married to the photographer Alfred Stieglitz and she was also interested in photography, that´s why you can see influence of photography in many of her works. The fine, especially dark colours and organic shapes are ageless and in the same time they reflect the art forms of the beginning of 1900´s.
