Amerikkalaisen Ammi Phillipsin (1788-1865) herttaisessa maalauksessa "Punapukuinen tyttö kissan ja koiran kanssa" pääosassa on iso punainen puhvihihainen mekko. Hameen alta pilkistävät hauskat pitsiset housunlahkeet. Tytön ilme on viaton  ja vakava. Hän pitää sylissään valkoista kissaa, jonka muoto toistaa puvun puhvihihojen mallia. Kissa on aika kansanomaisesti ja yksinkertaisesti maalattu, ja sen pää toistaa myös tytön pyöreiden kasvojen mallia. Tytön jalkojen vieressä oleva koira on realistisemman näköinen.

Funny lace trouser legs are peeping from under the dress. The expression of the girl is innocent and serious. She is holding in her lap a white cat, and the shape of the cat is replicating the form of the puffed sleeves. The cat has been painted quite simple and folksy, and the of the cat is also replicating the round shape of the girl´s face. The dog by the feet of the girl looks more realistic.
