Culture House Laikku and Studio are the newest gallery space in Tampere. The house was build in 1925 as a library building, and the city library moved away in 1986. There is a lot of memories for me in this building, because I worked there over ten years. Now there are in Studio Hannamari Matikainen's (b. 1976) monoprints of animals. The pictures are black and white, but apparently they are supplemented after printing with a brush. The technique is intriguing. The black main colour is beautiful and deep. The animals have been made by wiping away the black colour or adding some white before printing. Are the animal shapes born by accident, and the expressions and details finalized by the power of the imagination and paint brush or are the animal figures designed carefully already before printing the monoprint. And how different these animals are, button eyed, furry, wild, tame and quite human, but also primitive.
