ESKO MÄNNIKKÖ - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Esko Männikön (s. 1959) valokuvanäyttely Helsingin Taidehallissa on kaoottinen. Pari sataa isoa valokuvaa on ripustettu vieriviereen seinille vanhoissa leveissä taulunkehyksissä. Keskellä huoneita on koppeja, joihin on ryömittävä sisälle, eivätkä sisällä olevat panoraamat oikein kosketa.  Yhden seinän valokuvat valloittavat melkein kattoon asti. Männikön tuotanto on laaja ja sitä leimaavat selkeät teemat: pohjoisen vanhatpojat, Meksikon köyhät, autiotalot, eläimet, hautausmaat ja nähtävästi uusimmat melkein abstraktit esineet. Valokuvat eri teemoista ja kausilta on kuitenkin ripustettu ilman mitään aika- tai aihejärjestystä. Näyttelyn katseleminen vaatii siis aikaa. Joissakin kohdin toisiinsa liittyvät kuvat tuntuvat vertautuvan: samantapainen muoto tai väri herättää ajatuksia. Itse ainakin aloin hitaasti koota näitä kuvia aivoissani omiin kansioihinsa eli järjestellä niitä. Pohjois-Suomen yksinäiset miehet ja autiotalot saivat miettimään ajan kulumista. Meksikolaisten ihmisten ja läheltä kuvattujen eläinten silmät pysäyttivät. Onkohan sammaloituneiden ja melkein rikkinäisten kehysten tarkoitus vieraannuttaa katsoja taiteen elitismistä ja korostaa kuvien kansanomaisuutta. Mahtava ja ajatuksia herättävä näyttely!

The exhibition of Esko Männikkö's (b. 1959) photographs in Taidehalli in Helsinki is chaotic. A couple of hundred large photographs in old broad picture frames are cheek by jowl on the walls. There are booths in the middle of the rooms where you have to crawl inside, and the panoramas inside are not really touching. On one wall the photographs almost reach the ceiling. Männikkö´s production is very wide and characterized by clear themes: lonely Northern men, Mexico´s poor people, deserted houses, animals, graveyards, and apparently recent almost abstract objects. Still, photographs from different themes and periods hang without any chronology or subject of the order. So, you need time to watch this exhibition. At some point the pictures seem to have some analogy: similar shape or colour makes you think. At least I started slowly to gather these pictures in my brains into files or I started to organize them. The lonely men of Northern Finland  and deserted houses make you to think of passing of the time. The eyes of Mexican poor and very close photographed animals halted. Might the use of mossy and almost broken old fashioned frames be to alienate the viewer from the elitism of the high art and emphasize the ordinariness of the pictures. What a powerful and though-provoking exhibition!
