Kissakortti: 318 / Cat Card: 318

Englantilaisen Hilary Paynterin (s. 1943) kissakortissa, alkujaan puukaiverruksessa, on 36 pientä kissaa: laihoja siamilaisia, pörröisiä angorakissoja, raitaisia maatiaskissoja, pari nukkuu mutta suurin osa katsoo suoraan katsojaa. Alkuperäisen puupiirroksen kooksi ilmoitetaan kortin takana 17 x 17 cm eli ei paljonkaan korttia isompi koko. Teknisesti näin pieniä yksityiskohtia täynnä olevan puukaiverruksen teko on mestarinäyte. Kissankarvoja on kuvassa hurja määrä, ja kunkin kissan taustakin on kaiverrettu täyteen pieniä pisteitä tai viivoja. Tässä on tarvittu varmasti suurennuslasia.

There are thirty six small cats in this card, originally a wood engraving, by English Hilary Paynter (b. 1943) - skinny Siamese cats, fluffy Turkish angora cats, striped domestic cats, a couple are sleeping but most of them are looking straight at you. The size of the wood engraving is 17 x 17 cm according to the backside of the card, so it is not much bigger than the card. The making of a wood engraving so full of minute details is a master work. There is a huge amount of cat hair in this picture, and even the backgrounds are carved full of small dots or lines. The magnifying glass must have been useful.

Cats are from Venus (Kissat ovat Venuksesta) on tämän englantilaisen Hilary Paynterin (s. 1943) puukaiverruksen nimi. Kolme kissaa virnistelee ilkeän näköisinä kolmelle koiralle, jotka heidän mielestään ovat varmaan Marsista. Koirat ovat aika surkean näköisiä otuksia, yksi muistuttaa oikeastaan enemmän lammasta. Puukaiverruksen jälki on graafisesti hieno, kissojen karvat ja sorapolku koirankopille.

Cats are from Venus is called this wood engraving by English Hilary Paynter (b. 1943). Three cats are grinning maliciously at three dogs, which in their opinion are surely from Mars. The dogs are sorry looking creatures, one of them looks more like a sheep than a dog. The graphic marking of the wood engraving is fine, fur of the cats and the pebble path to the doghouse.

Englantilaisen Hilary Paynterin (s.1943) puukaiverruksessa venyttelevät Penny ja Tuppence, kaksi mustavalkoista kissaa. Nämä kissat ovat ehkä sisarukset ja hyvin uteliaita kumpikin. Puukaiverruksella Paynter on hienosti saanut esiin mustavalkoisen turkin tektuurin.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

English Hilary Paynter's (b. 1943) wood engraving depicts two black and white cats: Penny and Tuppence. The cats might be sisters, and really curious both of them. Paynter has highlighted finely the texture of the fur of these black and white cats.

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.
