Martti Innasen ensimmäinen maalaus, 1963 / Martti Innanen´s first paitning, 1963 |
***********
In this summer´s Naïve Artists in Iittala exhibition one whole room is dedicated to Finnish Naïve Art´s Grand Old Man Martti Iinnanen (1931-2014). Innanen brought fresh blood to Finland´s art world with his limitless, funny, twisted and ludicrously long-named paintings. Everybody seemed to love these rustic landscapes, farm hands, servant girls, people stopped at their steps, barking dogs, old barns, dark forests and also some exotic features. In this exhibition there is Innanen´s first painting from the year 1963. Already in this are visible the the key features: camels, Finnish flag, an old bearded farm hand with a scythe in his hand at the Kärsämäki train station. Why were camels so inspiring for Innanen that they venture later both in the desert and in genuine Finnish countryside. Innanen had a very original way to paint. He painted on hardboard, and at the beginning on the patterned side of the hardboard that was then visible on the final painting. Perhaps he wanted to imitate canvas. I like most paintings from the 1960´s and 1970`s with their delicious colours and many details. In the exhibition there is a beautiful painting of the old houses and The Round Tower of Vyborg with very beautiful grey hues. Later Innanen concentrated to paint portrait or just faces. Sometimes the features of these faces were molded like reliefs on the painting.
