ELLEN GALLAGHER: AxME-NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Amerikkalaisen Ellen Gallagherin (s. 1965) AxME-näyttely Tampereella Sara Hildénin taidemuseossa ei tunnu painostavalta tai synkältä, vaikka aiheet sitä ovatkin. Gallagher käsittelee Amerikan mustien ongelmallista historiaa, identiteettiä sekä muodin ja valkoihoisen valtaluokan painostusta. Töissä on hurja joukko peruukkeja ja tukkia vaaleista suorista kampauksista valtavan kokoisiin afroihin, luonnottoman suuria huulia ja nuken silmiä. Työt on tehty paperia leikkaamalla, yhdistelemällä mainoksia ja lehtileikkeitä, lisäämällä plastosiinimuovauiluja, piirroksia tai raaputuksia. Välillä tulevat mieleen tilkkutyöt. Oma kokonaisuus ovat vedenalaista elämää, kaloja ja vesikasveja kuvaavat herkät, valkoiset paperityöt, joista muotojen löytyminen on välillä haasteellista. Gallagherin työt ovat myös selvästi hänen oman identiteettinsä etsintää, välillä ironisesti, välillä hiukan suopeasti hymyillenkin.

American Ellen Gallagher´s (b. 1965) AxME exhibition in Sara Hildén Art Museum in Tampere does not feel oppressive, even though the subject are. Gallagher deals with the problematic history of American black people, their identity and the effect of the fashion and pressures  of the white community. In her works there is a vast amount of wigs and hairdos from blonde straight hair to huge affros, unnaturally thick lips and doll´s eyes. The art woks are made with by cutting paper, combining advertisements and magazine cuttings, adding plasticine moulding, drawings and scratching. Occasionally they remind me of patch works. En entity of its own are the sensitive white paper works of underwater life, fish and water plants, and it is  sometimes hard to find the shapes on white paper. Gallagher´s works are clearly also searching her own identity, sometimes ironically, sometimes mildly smiling.
