HIGH STREET -KIRJA / BOOK

Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) oli englantilainen taiteilija, kuvittaja ja paljon muuta, mm. taitava linoleikkauksien ja puupiirrosten tekijä. Tämä viehättävä kirja "High Street" on näköispainos vuonna 1938 ilmestyneestä teoksesta. Kirjasta löytyvät  Raviliousin neliväriset litografiat kauppojen näyteikkunoista ja J.M Richardsin hauskat selostukset näistä kaupoista ja niiden tuotteista. Richards selostaa tarkkaan, miten juustot, kinkut, ilotulitteet ja sukelluspuvut valmistettiin ja miten näyteikkunat koristeltiin. Kirja on kuin haikeat hyvästit pienille erikoiskaupoille suurten kauppakeskusten ja markettien tieltä.

Raviliousin litografiat ovat taidokkaita ja yllättäviä. Kinkut suorastaan vyöryvät katsojan päälle, ylpeät kauppiaat seisovat kauppojensa rapuilla, pimeissä illoissa liikkeiden valot loistavat näyteikkunoissa. Kuvissa on usein jotain surrealistista ja taianomaista.

Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) was an English artist, illustrator and much more, i.a. he made skillful linocuts and wood engravings. This charming book "High Street" is a facsimile of the original edition from 1938. The coloured lithographs of shop windows in the book are by Ravilious and the funny commentary of the shops and their products is by J.M. Richards. He tells faithfully how the cheeses, hams, fire crackers, and submarine suits were made and how the shop windows were decorated. This book is like a nostalgic farewell to small special shops before big supermarkets and malls.

The lithographs of Ravilious are masterly and surprising. The hams are almost rolling in the arms of the viewer from the shop windows, the proud shopkeepers stand in the doorways, the lights of the shop windows shine in dark evenings. There is often something surrealistic and magical in the pictures.
