Helsingin Kiasmaan on pystytetty mahtava englantilaisen Grayson Perryn (s. 1960) näyttely. Mestarillista!

Englsih Grayson Perry's (b. 1960) fabulous exhibition was at Kiasma in Helsinki. Perry is very visible and vociferous artist persona, a transvestite. He expresses his opinions with his appearances and art works on political and social issues and often with some humour. Behind Perry there must be almost a factory or factories, because the huge wall textiles and large ceramic works require professional workers and a lot of them. Surely the wild ideas for these art works originate from Perry. A wall-sized woodcut was really amazing - a self-portrait full of details. This work was compiled from several sheets of woodcuts. The exhibition was presented finely: huge tapestries were on the walls, ceramics in the middle of the floor, and there was even a funny motorcycle in the back room. You could watch all of them from different angles, far and near, especially the countless details. Masterly!

It's always nice to pop in Kiasma when visiting Helsinki. At the same visit you can see many interesting exhibition of modern art, and the museum building is fine. Now I finally saw Jani Leinonen's (b. 1978) Obedience School. "The School" was erected in the middle of a vast museum hall, and there you could watch an educational film. The topic was surely supportable, but using Docventures duo as presenters did not work. Docventures have skillfully created themselves a brand almost from nothing and on the merits of others. Leinonen's exhibition deals with the critics of popular brands and the creation of images with texts and shapes. Apparently there comes a line somewhere, and the mockery of brands starts to feel like branding itself. One wall was full of signs of beggars in golden frames. Might Leinonen even pay for the beggars for them? Leinonen's work was exhibited last summer at Banksy's popular Dismaland

Face to Face exhibition was a large collection of portraits made with almost any possible technique. The traditional paintings/self-portraits in the first room fascinated me. There was a long row of Kalervo Palsa's self-portraits, the one with a noose was touching. Likewise, Stiina Saaristo's vast and vivid picture full of details remains in my mind a long time.

VALOKUVIA HELSINGISSÄ / PHOTOGRAPHS IN HELSINKI
Kumpikin edusti selvästi omaa aikaansa, Mapplethorp 1970-lukua. Aiheet oli aseteltu kliinisesti taideteoksiksi: muotokuvia, alastomia vartaloita, kukkasia, kreikkalaisia patsaita. Patti Smithin kuvista olen

I saw in Helsinki two powerful photograph exhibitions in a row. Ismö Hölttö´s (b. 1940) big exhibition of black and white photos from the 1960`s was in Ateneum Art Museum. He photographed affectionately people as well in the countryside and on the streets of his home town Helsinki. The countryside was in a transition, but you could still see the traditional handwork, making hay by hand, the clothes were threadbare, but the smiles broad. You could see the markings of hard work in old farmers and the children were laughing around. In the streets of Helsinki you could already see the beginning of a new
youth culture, guys in their zoot suits and girls with their beehive hair. The tuneful and sharp picture are finely processed. In these pictures the photographer has really got close to his subjects and made the surrounding an effective part of the picture.
Robert Mapplethorp´s (1946-1989) photographs in Kiasma Art Museum are already familiar to me after exhibitions in London and Stockholm´s Fotografiska. The contrast to Hölttö`s exhibition couldn´t be bigger. Both were clearly representatives of their time, Mapplethorp of the 1970`s. His subjects were clinically staged to art works: portraits, naked bodies, flowers and Grecian statues. I have always liked the photographs of Patti Smith, and so it was now. Other photographs have felt earlier more striking. Perhaps you should not experience these two exhibitions quite in a row, the ways to take photos and the results are so different. In Hölttö´s pictures people are themselves in their own surroundings - Hölttö takes photographs. In Mapplethorps pictures the subjects are precisely illuminated and staged to emphasize the message - Mapplethorp makes visual art.

AURINKOINEN PÄIVÄ HELSINGISSÄ / SUNNY DAY IN HELSINKI
Mikä hieno loppusyksyn aurinkoinen päivä koluta kolme taidenäyttelyä Helsingissä. Kaksi voimakasta naista ja yksi mies.
What a fine & sunny late autumn day to scour three art exhibitions in Helsinki. Two powerful women and one man.
Amos Anderssonin taidemuseossa on hyvin koottu kronologinen näyttely Fanny Churbergin (1845-1892) maalauksia.
A nicely collected chronological exhibition of Fanny Churberg´s paintings in Amos Andersson Art Museum. And it is really remarkably typical at least for Finnish women artists: she was found and recognized 30 years after her death. Churberg painted during her short career romantic landscapes, a short period of still lifes, and lastly quite dramatic winter landscapes. The name for several paintings is " Forest Interior", and it really is typical for her: beautiful green spring foliage, creeks, dark clouds, thunder, rocks, moss, and lonely old tree trunks.
Tennispalatsissa on Nanna Suden (s. 1967) uusimpia maalauksia. Haluaako Nanna Susi jotenkin rikkoa aiemman autereisen tyylinsä?
Nanna Susi´s (b. 1967) newest paintings are in Tennispalatsi (Helsinki City Art Museum). Only a couple of paintings follow her earlier style: beautiful dreamy and meditative landscapes, lonely trees, pink, blue or purple scenes laced with cold or silver. Now in her large paintings there are silhouettes seen from behind or big faces with closed bulking eyes and no nose or mouth - except arbitrary placed brightly painted red lips in some paintings. The faces look like aliens and are somewhat frightening. Does Nanna Susi want to somehow to break her earlier misty and beautiful style?
Osmo Rauhalan (s. 1957) kantaaottavia luontoaiheisia töitä on Kiasman näyttelyssä. Tyyli on jo tuttua: graafista, niukkaväristä, steriiliä, tarkkaa, siistiä ja selkeää. Aiheet on hyvin avattu ja yhteydet mm. DNA:han, lajien kehitykseen ja yleisemmin luonnonsuojeluun selitetty. Hiukan ehkä opettavainen ote. Minuun iskivät etenkin kissat ja rotat.
Osmo Rauhala`s (b. 1957) position taking nature themed works are in an exhibition in Kiasma (Museum of Contemporary Art). The style is familiar: graphic, scarce coloured. sterile, precise, clean and clear. The subjects are nicely opened and the connections with e.g. DNA, the development of species, and saving the nature in general are explained. Perhaps a little educational. I was hit especially by the cats and the rats.
