MUSEUM VAN LOON - AMSTERDAM

Amsterdamin kanavien varrella on useita ihania kotimuseoita, yleensä 1600-luvun rikkaiden kauppiaiden ja pankkiirien asuttamia. Nyt kävin Van Loon -museossa, jossa erikoisuutena ovat perheenjäsenistä tehdyt lukemattomat muotokuvat pastellimaalauksia. Muotokuvista on aika vaikea päätellä, että ne todella ovat pastelleja eivätkä öljyväriä tai akvarelleja. Pastelleilla erityisesti ihon oli mahdollista saada luonnonmukaiseksi ja sävykkääksi ennen valokuvauksen yleistymistä. Näiden kaupunkipalatsien takapihat ovat yllättäviä, muotopuutarhoja, kuin paratiiseja keskellä vilkasta kaupunkia.

By the canals of Amsterdam there are several lovely home museums, usually lived by the rich merchants or bankers of the 1600´s. I visited now Museum Van Loon where the specialty are the numerous portraits of the family members done as pastel drawings. It is quite hard to reason of the portraits, that they really are pastels and not oil paintings or watercolours. It was easy to paint especially the skin very natural-looking and tuneful with the pastels before the photographs game popular. The back gardens of these city palaces are surprising, like paradises in the middle of the busy city.

RENSSEN ART GALLERY - AMSTERDAM

Erik Renssen

Tällaiseenkin voi Amsterdamissa törmätä: Renssen-galleria täynnä Erik Renssenin maalauksia Pablo Picasson tyyliin. Ihan suoria kopioita taulut eivät olleet, mutta aika lähellä. Varsinkin naismuotokuvat oli tyylikkäästi toteutettu. Galleriassa oli myös aitoja Picasson grafiikanlehtiä myynnissä. Melkein tämä Renssen tuntui hengenheimolaiselta kun muistelin omaa linopiirrostani taiteilijakissasta Picassona, ja aikomus on tehdä toinenkin vastaava työ.

You can stumble even to something like this in Amsterdam: Renssen Art Gallery full of paintings by Erik Renssen in the style of Pablo Picasso. The paintings were not straight copies, but rather near. Especially the portraits of women were stylish. There were also real authentic Picasso´s graphics on sale. I almost recognized this Renssen as my soul mate when I remembered my linocut of an artist cat as Picasso, and I plan to make a similar new one.

RIJKSMUSEUM - AMSTERDAM

Rijksmuseum Amsterdamissa on valtava. Tämän kokonaisuuden tutkimiseen tarvittaisiin monta päivää. Parissa tunnissa siitä pystyy katsomaan tietenkin vain Rembrandtit ja Vermeerit. Museon ehdoton keskipiste on Rembrandt van Rijnin Yövartio, valtava, mahtipontinen maalaus, josta aikojen kuluessa on leikattu tilanpuutteiden takia palat kolmesta reunasta. Tämä hiukan vaikuttaa perspektiiviin, mutta valojen ja varjojen teho on tallessa. Museossa on samantapaisia ylenpalttisen runsaita maalauksia paljon, osa jopa hiukan makaabereja. Hieno oli nähdä luonnossa Johannes Vermeerin maalaus Delftin kadusta. Juliste tästä kuvasta roikkui kauan opiskelijakämpän seinällä. Yllättävää oli, miten maalauksen struktuuri oli nähtävissä, valkoiset kohdat olivat melkein reliefinä. Yksi kokonainen huone oli omistettu Henri de Touloise Lautrecin värilitografioille, ja ne olivat upeita. Parikin televisiosta nähtyä ohjelmaa tulivat mieleen: dokumentti Rijksmuseumin remontista, jossa taisteltiin museon läpi kulkevan pyörätien säilyttämisestä (oli se paikoillaan) ja draama, jossa nukkekodilla oli iso merkitys (englantilainen Nukkekaappi / The Miniaturist).

Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is enormous. To explore this whole set you will need several days. In a few hours you can only see the Rembrandts and Vermeers. The absolute focal point of the museum is Rembrandt de Rijn's Night Watch, the huge pompous painting, which has been cut from three sides because of the lack of space. This has affected a bit on the perspective, but the effect of light and shadows is still there. There are a lot of similar abundant plentiful paintings, some of them a bit macabre. It was really fine to see Johannes Vermeer's street scene from Delft in nature. A poster of the painting was hanging on my student lodging's wall quite a long time. It was surprising to see how the structure of the painting was visible, the white  parts were almost like a relief. One whole room was dedicated to Henri de Touloise Lautrec's colour lithographs, and they were gorgeous. Couple of TV programs came to my mind: a document of the renovation of Rijksmuseum where they were fighting about the protection of the cycle route trough the museum (it was remained) and a drama where a doll's house had a meaningful part (British The Miniaturist).  

STEDELIJK - AMSTERDAM

Stedelijk -museo Amsterdamissa oli paljon parempi kuin osasin odottaa. Tässä museossa on oikeastaan kaikki merkityksellinen taide 1900-luvun alusta alkaen: Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Malewich ja sadat muut. Suomalaisiakin on kokoelmissa: Aallon tuoli ja maljakko, Sarpanevan ja Wirkkalan lasia sekä Teema-astiasto. Museossa voi kokea myös uusia elämyksiä, vain yksi henkilö kerrallaan pääsi Beanery-baariin, jonka hämäryydessä  lasikuituhahmot (Robert C. Bucknam) ryyppäsivät erinomainen ääniraita (George Johnson) taustanaan. Myös aivan uusia liikkuvia ja vilkkuvia installaatioita voi museossa ihailla. Tässä museossa voisi viettää koko päivän!

Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam was a lot better than I expected. There are really all relevant art after 1900: Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Malewich and hundreds of others. You could find even a few Finnish artists: Aalto's chair and vase, Sarpaneva's and Wirkkala's glass and Teema dinner set. You can experience in this museum also new thrills, only one person at a time was allowed in the Beanery  bar where in the dim light the glass fiber creatures (Robert C. Buchnam) drank their liquor with the superb sound (George Johnson) in the background. You can also admire quite new moving and flashing installation in this museum where you could easily spend the whole day.

VAN GOGH & JAPAN

Van Gogh -museon näyttelyn Van Gogh & Japan takia lähdin kahdeksi päiväksi Amsterdamiin, ja se kyllä kannatti. Tämä näyttely oli erinomainen! Esillä oli rinnakkain Vincent van Goghin (1853-1890) maalauksia ja japanilaisia puupiirroksia, osa van Goghin omasta yli 600 piirroksen kokoelmasta. 1800-luvun lopulla japanilaisuus oli muotia Pariisissa ja puupiirroksia saattoi hankki helposti ja edullisesti. Van Gogh kiinnitti puupiirroksia huoneensa seinille nastoilla ja kohteli niitä vain inspiraationsa lähteenä eikä minään taidesijoituksena. Van Gogh ihaili piirrosten selkeyttä, isoja väripintoja, perspektiivejä ja luonnon kuvauksia. Japanilaisuuden ihailu meni niin pitkälle, että hän yritti perustaa puupiirtäjien tapaan tiiviin taiteilijayhteisön ympärilleen. Gauguinin omakuvassakin on japanilaistyylisiä kukkia taustalla. Van Gogh itse kopioi joihinkin muotokuviin puupiirroksien aiheita tai taustalle vuoristomaiseman puupiirrosten tapaan. Van Gogh myös maalasi useita suoria kopioita puupiirroksista. Tämän erikoisnäyttelyn lisäksi Van Gogh -museossa ihastutti erityisesti koskettava sarja omakuvia.

Because of this exhibition of Van Gogh & Japan I went for two days to Amsterdam, and it really was worth it. The exhibition was exceptional! There were side by side Vincent Van Gogh's (1853-1890) paintings and Japanese woodcuts, many of them from Van Gogh's own collection of over 600 prints. At the latter part of 1800 Japan was fashionable in Paris, and it was easy and inexpensive to acquire Japanese prints. Van Gogh attached prints on the walls of his working rooms with pins and took then only as inspiration for his paintings and not as any investment. Van Gogh admired the clarity, large colour blocks, perspective, and depictions of nature in the woodcuts. His admiration of Japan went so far that he tried to establish a kind of fellowship or brotherhood of artists around him like he thought there were in Japan working with woodcuts. Even in the self-portrait of Gauguin there are Japanese flowers on the background. Van Gogh copied also on the background of his paintings Japanese subjects or mountain landscapes like in the woodcuts. Van Gogh also did several straight copies of the woodcuts. In addition to this special exhibition I admired in Van Gogh Museum especially van Gogh's touching self-portraits.
