Tuulikki Pietilä's (1917-2009) graphics exhibition in Ateneum is perfect. All her different styles and masterly knowledge and perfect skills of different techniques are clearly visible, and still the overall impression is not confusing. Well, to my mind the only shortcoming is that there not a single of her linocuts in the exhibition. Tuuli Pietilä's landscapes from Italy are like from the hand of an Renaissance artist. The trends of the beginning of 1900's are manifested in fine experiments of shapes, shades and subjects from cats and plants to circus and daredevil motorbike riders. Several scenes of city views are magnificent. The mastery of technique is seen also in her abstract works, she has manipulated pictures by hitting them with hammer and nails, cut them in parts and combined them to new forms. In a vitrine there a disarming collection of graphics tools she passed to Inari Krohn. In this exhibition Tuulikki Pietilä really steps out from behind of her partner Tove Jansson.
