| Georges Seurat: The Bridge at Courbevoie |
The Courtauld Gallery on ihan paras taidemuseo Lontoosssa. Paitsi että siellä ovat esillä aina museon omat impressionistiset helmet, siellä järjestetään pieniä erikoisnäyttelyitä. Nyt voi nähdä, miten Georges Seuratin (1859-1891) pointillistinen maalaus on innostanut englantilaista Bridget Riley'a (s. 1931). Riley kopioi Seuratin teoksen ja teki siitä myös oman pelkistetymmän versionsa. Vähitellen hänen maalauksensa kehittyivät yhä enemmän selkeämmiksi ja viimeisimmät ovat jo selvästi optisia. Ihastuin hänen mustavalkoiseen suureen maalaukseensa, joka aina muutti muotojaan kun sitä katsoi eri suunnalta.
Tämän näyttelyn jälkeen museon omiakin kokoelmia katsoi taas hiukan uusin silmin. Nyt erottuivat muutkin kuin Seuratin pointillistiset työt. Henri Matissen (1869-1954) Punainen penkki näytti jo melkein pointillistiselta.

The Courtauld Gallery is just the best art museum in London. Except that there are always the Impressionist gems from the museum's own collection, there are small special exhibitions. Now you can see how Georges Seurat' s (1859-1891) Pointillist painting has inspired English Bridget Riley (b. 1931). Riley copied Seurat´s painting and made also her own more reduced version. Gradually her painting developed more and more plain, and the latest are clearly Optical. I was delighted by her black and white large painting, which always seemed to change when I looked it from different perspective.
After this exhibition I looked at the museum's own collection with new eyes. Now I saw also other Pointillist paintings than Seurat. Henri Matiisse's (18959-1954) Red Bench looked a lot Pointillist.
