In Royal Academy of Arts in London there is a charming exhibition of impressionistic paintings: "From Paris: A Taste for Impressionism. Paintings from the Clark". American Robert Sterling Clark got his money from selling Singer sowing machines. Together with his French wife Francine they collected over the time of forty years a magnificent collection of impressionistic paintings and they founded a museum for their collection in USA. The paintings in this exhibition are a part of Clark`s museum collection.

Of about 80 paintings in this exhibition 20 were by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and they were all superb. I liked, especially, the painting: Sunset - all blue and red paint. The portraits were also great, the colours seemed to somehow glow.
Édouard Manet |
The still lifes were fine: roses, vases, beautiful reflections (Manet). Some landscape paintings showed that the impressionists were only people - perhaps painting in the open air resulted some kind of incompleteness (Corot). A couple of exotic or orientalist paintings were quite arrogant (Gérôme). All the portraits were quite splendid (Renoir, Degas).
Yllätys oli yksi Paul Gauguinin maalaus: Nuori kristitty tyttö. Paras ehdottomasti, ihana keltainen.
Paul Gauguin´s painting Young Christian Girl was a surprise. Absolutely the best, lovely yellow.
