ANOTHER LONDON - näyttely / Exhibition

Lyhyellä matkalla Lontooseen ehdin käydä muutamassa taidenäyttelyssä - niitähän Lontoossa riittää.

There was time for a couple of art exhibitions on a short trip to London - and there sure is art in London.

Tate Britainissa on valokuvanäyttely "Toinen Lontoo - kansainväliset valokuvaajat ikuistavat katuelämää 1930-1980". Kuvat ovat mustavalkoisia ja ne on aseteltu kauniisti katselukorkaudelle. Kaikissa kuvissa on jotain samantapaista - ei-lontoolaisten kuvaajien ällistystä kaikesta siitä, mitä Lontoon kaduilla näkee:  erikoisia ihmisiä, luokkaeroja, pubeja, hienoja ravintoloita ja sumua. Kuvaajat ovat tulleet Lontooseen joko natseja pakoon lähteneinä  tai isojen aikakauslehtien ja kuvatoimistojen palkkaamina. Osa on asunut kaupungissa pitempään, osa vain käynyt. Monille kokemus on ollut klaustrofobinen, mutta kuvissa on silti usein rauhallinen tai seestynyt tunnelma.

In Tate Britain there is an exhibition "Another London - International Photographers Capture City Life 1930-1980".  Photographs are black and white and they have been displaid beautifully on the right viewing height. There is something similar in the pictures - non-Londoner photographer´s amazement at everything you can see on the streets of London: peculiar people, social differences, pubs, fine restaurants, and fog. The photographers have come to London either to flee from the Nazis or sent by big journals or photo agencies. Some have lived longer in the city, some have just visited. The experience has been claustrophopic to many but there is still often something peaceful and serene in the pictures.
