.Damien Hirst - taidenäyttely Lontoon Tate Modernissa.Damien Hirstiä (s. 1965) on syytetty kaupallisuudesta, julkisuus- ja sensaatiohakuisuudesta, rahanhimosta ja apulaisten käytöstä teostensa työstämisessä.
Tate Modernin näyttely on kuitenkin ihan muuta ja positiivinen yllätys. Vaikka näyttelyn teemoja ei voi kuvata positiivisiksi. Vasta tässä näyttelyssä ymmärsin Hirstin taidetta kokonaisuutena. Olen aiemmin nähnyt yksittäisiä Hirstin teoksia mm. hain ja lampaan formaldehydtankeissaan Saatchi-gallerian näyttelyssä vuonna 2003, ja yksittäisinä teokset kieltämättä ovat aika hätkähdyttäviä.
Näyttelyn teemat ovat selkeät: kuolema (hai ja muut eläimet säilöttyinä formaldehydiin), elämän kiertokulku (kärpäset ja perhoset), ihmisen halu säädellä elämäänsä (lääkkeet, kirurgiset välineet), ihmisen omat tavat elämän lyhentämiseen (tupakointi), halu järjestykseen ja elämän kontrollointiin (pilkkumaalaukset, uskonto). Perhosten siivistä kootut "alttarimaalaukset" ja kuolleista kärpäsistä koottu "Musta aurinko" ovat esteettisesti kauniita. Timantit (timanteilla päällystetty pääkallo) taitavat olla enemmänkin pilkkaa ("Timantit ovat ikuisia"). Ajatuksia herättävä näyttely!
Damien Hirst (b. 1965) is accused of commercialism, attension and sensation seeking, greed, money-grubbing and excessive use of assistants.
Hist´s exhibition in Tate Modern is however something else and a positive surprise. The themes of the exhibition are still not very positive. In this exhibition I saw Hirst´s art for the first time as a whole. I have seen aerlier a few single works of Hirst for example in Saachi Gallery in 2003, and these single pieces (sharks and other animals in formaldehyde tanks) are undeniably quite shocking.
The themes in the exhibition are clear: the death (animals in the formaldehyde tanks), the cycle of the life (flies and butterflies), the human desire to control one´s life (medicine and surgical intruments), human ways to shorten one´s life (smoking), seeking some kind of control in life (spot paintings, religion). The "altar pieces" made of butterfly wings and "The Black Sun" made of dead flies are esthetically beautiful. Diamonds and the human skull covered with diamonds may be more like a joke ("Diamonds are forever"). A thought -provoking exhibition!
