Englantilainen Sheila Robinson (1925-1988) on ehdottomasti yksi suosikkigraafikkoni. Hän asui Edward Bawdenin ympärille kerääntyneessä Great Bardfieldin taiteilijayhteisössä Essexissä. Robinsonin aiheet ovat usein kotoisia, kissoja, kukkia, huonekaluja kuten tässä litografiassa. Kissa nukkuu pyöreällä kerällä tuolilla, jonka istuin on myös pyöreä. Ei ehkä kovin mukava nukkumapaikka! Perspektiivi on hylätty ja värit ovat herkkiä: harmaata ja oranssia. Taustalla oleva tapettikuvio on varmaan yksi Robinsonin itse suunnittelemista.

English Sheila Robinson (1925-1988) is definitely one of my most favorite graphic artists. She lived in the artist commune gathered around Edward Bawden in Great Bardfield in Essex. Robinson's subjects were often domestic, cats, flowers, furniture like in this lithograph. A cat is sleeping coiled up on a chair, and the seat is also round. Perhaps the most comfortable place to sleep. The perspective is rejected and the colours are tender, grey and orange. The pattern of the wallpaper on the background is perhaps designed by Robinson herself.

Tämä lahjaksi saatu kirja on aarre: Bawden, Ravilious and the Artists of Great Bardfield. Kirja kertoo taitailijayhteisöstä, joka syntyi Toisen Maailmansodan aikana Edward Bawdenin ja Eric Ravilousin ympärille pieneen Great Bardfieldin kylään Englannissa. Elämä siellä oli aika yksinkertaista, mutta ystäväjoukko sai innostusta toisiltaan, järjesti kylässä näyttelyitä, taltioi katoavaa maalaismiljöötä ja perehdytti toinen toisiaan erilaisiin taidetekniikoihin. Vallitsevat tekniikat näyttävät olleen vesivärimaalaus, linoleikkaus ja tekstiilitaide. Eric Raviloiusin vaimon Tirzah Raviliousin puukaiverrukset ihastuttavat, samoin Sheila Robinsonin linoleikkaukset. Robinson teki grafiikkaa myös mielenkiintoisella itse kehittämällään kartonkileikkaus-menetelmällä. John Aldridgen öljymaalauksessa on ihana kissa naisen sylissä. Great Bardfieldissä tunnuttiin arvostavan kissoja. Kenneth Rowntreen tyylikkään värisissä vesivärimaalauksissa voi melkein tuntea vanhan kirkon tuoksun. Kirjassa on upea kuvitus ja hyvin tehty informatiivinen teksti koko yhteisöstä ja sen yksittäisistä taiteilijoista erikseen. Toisen maailmansodan jälkeinen aika tuntuu käsin kosketeltavalta.

John Aldridge, ölymaalaus / oil painting

This book that I got for a present is a real gem:  Bawden, Ravilious and the Artists of Great Bardfield. The book is about a group of artists or artist community, which gathered around Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious during and after the World War II in a small village of Bardfield in England. The life there was quite simple, but the group of artist friends supported and inspired each other, organized exhibitions, recorded the vanishing countryside and its culture, and introduced each other to new art techniques.the most popular ways of making art seem to have been watercolour, linocut and textiles.Eric Ravilious wife Tirzah Ravilious' wood engravings are fabulous, likewise Sheila Robinson's linocuts. Robinson made also graphics with her own interesting technique - cardboard cutting. John Aldridge's oil painting has a lovely cat in the lap of a woman. They really seem to have appreciated cats in Great Bardfield. In Kenneth Rowntree's stylishly coloured watercolours you can almost smell the old churches. This book has a gorgeous illustration and skillful, informative text of the whole artist community and separate artists on their own. The atmosphere of the times during and after the World War II is livid.

Englantilaisen Sheila Robinsonin (1925-1988) linoleikkaus Tom Cat saa ihan haukkomaan henkeä. Kuinka monta eri värilaattaa tähän lopputulokseen on tarvittu, ainakin sininen, vihreä, keltainen ja ruskea. Värit on hienosti vedostettu päällekkäin ja saatu näin kokonaan uusia sävyjä. Kissan keltainen turkki on kuitenkin puhtaan värinen. Siinä on keltaista ja ruskeaa. Jonkinlaista liukuvärjäystäkin on käytetty. Kissan turkin monet kuviot, viivat, pisteet ja pilkut on kaiverrettu hienosti. 

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

English Sheila Robinson´s (1925-1988) linocut Tom Cat makes you almost gasp for breath. How many different colour plates were needed for this end result, at least blue, green, yellow and brown. The colours are finely pulled on top of each other and so achieved totally new colour combinations. Still, the fur of the cat is pure and clear. There are yellow and brown in it. Some kind of gradient colouring has been used. The many patterns of the cat´s fur, spots, lines and dots are masterly carved.

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.
