Louis Wainin (1860-1939) kissakuvissa kissoilla on selvästi ihmiset esikuvinaan. Usein hän parodioi ihmisten käyttäytymistä erilaisissa sosiaalisissa tilanteissa, joskus aika groteskistikin. Tässä kortissa raitaiset kissat ovat ystävällismielisiä ja iloinen puheensorina (tai naukuminen) sekoittuu teekuppien kilinään. Piirros (muste, vesiväri, guassi) on tehty alkujaan postikortiksi 1900-luvun alussa. Hiukan ihmetyttää, miksi Victoria & Albert-museosta ostettu kortti on rajattu niin, että reunoissa olevista kissosista on puolet pois. V& A:lla on ollut käytössään alkuperäinen piirros (alla), ja siinä mukana ovat kokonaisina myös reunojen kissat.

Olen vuosien aikana kerännyt aikamoisen määrän kissakortteja. Museoiden kaupat ovat oikeita aarreaittoja kissakorttien kerääjälle. Useat korteistani ovat taidekortteja.

In Louis Wain´s (1860-1939) cat pictures the cats have clearly human beings as models. Often he parodies the human behavior in different social situations, sometimes quite grotesquely. In this card the stripy cats are friendly and a happy chatter ( or meowing) blends with the clinking of the teacups. The drawing (Indian ink, water colour, qouache) was originally made for a postcard in the beginning of the 1900`s. It´s a little wonder, why this card bought from Victoria & Albert Museum has been marked out so that half of the cats on the sides leaves out of the picture. V & A has the original drawing (below), and there even the outermost cats are complete.


I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.
