LYHDYN VALONSÄTEET / STRAYS OF LIGHT OF THE LANTERN

 

Linopiirrokset kaloista ovat edelleen vedostamatta, mutta suunnittelen jo niiden taakse merikrotin valonsäteitä. Vaaleamman ja tummemman sinisen pastelliveden välissä tulee olemaan vihertävää vettä eli pastelliväriä.

The linocuts of the fish are still unprinted, but I'm already planning the light rays of the monkfish behind them. Between the lighter and darker blue pastel water, there will be greenish water, pastel color.

POHJAVETTÄ / BOTTOM WATER

 

Pastelliveteen alkoi jo muotoutua pohja, johon auringon valo hiukan  heijastuu. Pohjaan on tulossa pieniä linopiirroksia kotiloista, yksi meritähti ja pari vesikasvia. joille haen paikkoja. Pohjassa vesi tulee olemaan tumman sininen, ja vesi vaalenee kun mennään pintaa kohti. Pienille linopiirroksille kaloista haen paikkoja.

The pastel water and bottom have already started to take shape, with a little sunlight reflecting off the bottom. I'm looking for places for small linocuts of seashells, one starfish and a couple of aquatic plants on the bottom. The water will be dark blue at the bottom, and the water will lighten as we move towards the surface. I'm looking for places for small linocuts of fish.

MERIKROTIN VALO / LIGHT OF THE MONKFISH

 

Lyhtykala eli merikrotti tulee olemaan tämän pastelliveden kuningas. Sillä on lyhty, jolla levittää valonsäteitä pohjaan asti. Tässä vaiheessa tein aika kirkkaan keltaiset valonsäteet ja ne näyttävät hirveiltä. Voisin heittää hanskat tiskiin, mutta aion peittää kirkkaimman valon sinisen tai vihertävän veden alle.

The lanternfish, or monkfish, will be the king of this pastel water. It has a lantern that spreads rays of light all the way to the bottom. At this point I made the rays of light quite bright yellow my gloves in the sink, but I'm going to cover the brightest light under the blue or greenish water.

VETTÄ JA KALOJA / WATER AND FISH

 

Piti hankkia vielä aiempaa isompi vanerinpala pöytälevyn päälle, jotta suunnittelemani vesi ja kalat mahtuisivat kaikki kerralla näkyviin. Levyn koko on metri kertaa metri. No, aiemmin paperin yläreunaan vedostamani Pispala-näkymä jää levyn ulkopuolelle, mutta siihen ei aiokaan levittää pastelliväriä kuten veteen. Suurin kala tässä rantavedessä tulee olemaan lyhtykala eli merikrotti.

I had to get an even bigger piece of plywood to put on the tabletop so that the water and fish I designed could all fit in at once. The size of the board is a meter by a meter. Well, the Pispala view that I previously printed on the top edge of the paper will remain outside the board, but I don't plan on applying pastel color to it like I will do to the water. Sarah Maycockin sävykäs, ruskea vesivärimaalaus kuvaa pörröistä kissaa ovella. Kissa katsoo anovasti, varmaan pyytää avaamaan oven ulos. Oven lasit heijastavat valoa kauniisti lattiallekin, ja ikkunoiden takaa pilkistää ihan vähän vihreää muuten ruskeasävyiseen kuvaan. Sarah Maycock's tonal, brown watercolor painting depicts a fluffy cat at a door. The cat looks pleadingly, probably asking you to open the door outside. The glass of the door reflects the light beautifully onto the floor, and from behind the windows a little green peeks through the otherwise brown-toned image. On the back of the card is an excerpt from William Cowper's (1731-1800)  poem The Retired Cat:

There, wanting nothing, save a fan,

To seem some nymph in her sedan,

Apparell'd in exactest sort,

And ready to be bourne to court.

VÄRIÄ TOISEENKIN KALAAN /COLOUR TO ANOTHER FISH

 

Väritin tussilla neljä uutta linopiirrosta kalasta. Tämä kala ei todellakaan elä Tahmelan rantavesissä, vaan on joku akvaariokala tai trooppinen kala. Sitä oli kiva värittää tussilla hiukan kirkkaammilla väreillä kirjavaksi. Silmät ovat keltaiset ja muu onkin sitten kaikkia värejä sekaisin. Tämäkin kala varmaan ui isompaan suunnitteilla olevaan sekatekniikkatyöhön. Tämän kalan koko on 10 x 13 cm,

I colored four new linocuts of fish with markers. This fish definitely doesn't live in the coastal waters of Tahmela, but is some kind of aquarium fish or tropical fish. It was nice to color it with markers with slightly brighter colors to make it colorful. The eyes are yellow and the rest is a mix of all colors. This fish will probably swim to a larger mixed media work that I'm planning. The size of this fish is 10 x 13 cm.

The largest picture / linocut was sold at Interi's Christmas shop, and we took a cat picture to the Runeberg's cottage shop to replace it. I bought some fun ankle warmers from Anja Leino, the person on duty, thank you! The Runeberg's cottage Christmas shop has all kinds of glass, fabric, wood, metal or wire crafts that are suitable as gifts or for yourself.

KISSA JA LINTU / CAT & BIRD

 

Lähetin kalenterini 2026 tilaajalle postissa ja laitoin mukaan kiitoskortin, sekatekniikan linnusta, ehkä kolibrista. Sain yllätyksen vastanottajalta: kuvan kolibrikortista, joka oli päässyt kaapin päälle ja vieressä on pieni linopiirros/monoprinttini vapaasti leijuvasta kissasta. Näitä valokuvia töistään uudessa, omassa kodissaan saa harvoin, ja ne ovat aina iloisia yllätyksiä. Tässä kuvassa on mukana myös seuraan hyvin sopiva jänispatsas (ei minun tekemä). Kiitos kuvasta!

I sent my calendar2026 to the subscriber in the mail and included a thank you card, a mixed media bird, maybe a hummingbird. I got a surprise from the recipient: a picture of the hummingbird card, which had ended up on the top of the cabinet, and next to it is a small linocut/monoprint of my own of a freely floating cat. These photos of your work in your new, own home are rare, and they are always a pleasant surprise. This photo also includes a very fitting rabbit statue (not made by me). Thanks for the photo!

VÄRIÄ KALAAN / COLOUR ON A FISH

 

Kokeilin värittää tussilla neljä linopiirrosta kalasta. Kaksi kalaa tuli kellahtaviksi ja kaksi sinertäviksi. Silmät tällä kalalla ovat punaiset. Kalan koko on 10 x 13 cm. Ehkä tämäkin kala ui suunnittelemaani kuvaan elämästä veden alla.

I tried to color four linocuts of a fish with a marker. Two of the fish turned out yellowish and two bluish. The eyes of this fish are red. The size of the fish is 10 x 13 cm. Maybe this fish will also swim into the picture I am planning of life underwater.

PARI KALAA / A COUPLE OF FISH

 

Tein pari uutta aika pientä linopiirroskalaa, noin 10 x 13 cm. Aikomukseni on käyttää näitä ainakin yhdessä isommassa sekatekniikkatyössä. Aikomus on myös värittää kalat tussilla. Saahan nähdä, millaisia niistä tulee...

I made a couple of new rather small linocut fish, about 10 x 13 cm. I plan to use these in at least one larger mixed media work. I also plan to color the fish with markers. We'll see how they turn out...

Reinhard Michlin "Hattukissa" / "Katze mit Hut" kuvaa glamour-kissaa. Hänellä on korvallaan iso lierihattu kallellaan kuin keimaillen. Silmät ovat vinot, turkki tyylikäs musta/valkoraitainen, mutta tassut pöydällä näyttävät aika pelottavilta. Voisiko noilla tassuilla nostaa huulilleen siron ruusukuvioisen posliinikupillisen maitoa? Kippis!

Reinhard Michlin's "Cat with a Hat" / "Katze mit Hut" depicts a glamour cat. She has a large brimmed hat tilted over her ear as if flirting. Her eyes are slanted, her fur is stylishly black/white striped, but her paws on the table look quite scary. Could those paws be used to lift a delicate rose-patterned porcelain cup of milk to her lips? Cheers!

OLLI MARTTILA

Art Pispala -kehystämö/galleriassa käydessä aina huomaa jotain sillä hetkellä kiinnostavaa tai kolahtavaa taidetta, sillä seinät ovat tauluja täynnä. Nyt ihastelin orivesiläisen Olli Marttilan (s. 1948) pastelleja. Hän toimi pitkään opettajana Oriveden opistossa ja tekee itse omat pastellivärinsä. Kuvissa on joku alkukantainen tunnelma, ihmisiä, taloja, luontoa.

When you visiting Art Pispala framing shop/gallery, you always notice something interesting or striking at that moment, because the walls are full of paintings. Now I admired the pastels of Olli Marttila (b. 1948) from Orivesi. He worked as a teacher at the Orivesi College for a long time and makes his own pastel colors. The pictures have a primitive atmosphere, people, houses, nature.

VALOT SYTTYIVÄT / THE LIGHTS CAME ON

 

Neljä A5-kokoista Pispala-linopiirrostani ovat nyt yhdessä ja samassa kuvassa: lintu sinisessä kuplassa, fasaani vihertävässä, portaat sekä kissa keltaisessa kuplassa. Tavoittelin tässä työssä hiukan vanhanaikaista, rohevaa kaiverrusjälkeä. Mutta yksityiskohtia tulikin ihan hurjasti. Kuva sai nimensä Lauri Viidan runosta: "Valot syttyivät silloin, yhä katsot kadulta ikkunaan". Koko on 20 x 60 cm.

Four of my A5-sized Pispala linocuts are now in one and the same picture: a bird in a blue bubble, a pheasant in a greenish one, stairs and a cat in a yellow bubble. In this work, I aimed for a slightly old-fashioned, rough engraving style. But the details came out quite wildly. The picture got its name from Lauri Viita's poem: "The Lights Came On Then, You Still Look From the Street To the Window". The size is 20 x 60 cm.

Naivismin Talvi: osa 6. Ja sitten portaita ylös puukoulun yläkerrokseen, jossa kohtaat todellisen nykynaivismin runsaudensarven tai ilotulituksen. Ison huoneen täyttää Taidelainaamogalleria, josta teokset saa heti kotiin omaksi tai lainaksi. Kesän näyttelyistä tuttujen naivistien teokset - isot ja pienet, eri tekniikat, koot ja tyylit ovat runsaassa ripustuksessa. Tässä vaaditaan keskittymistä ja rauhoittumista, jotta omat lempparit osuvat silmiin.

Winter of Naive Art: Part 6. And then up the stairs to the upper floor of the wooden school, where you will encounter a cornucopia or fireworks display of true contemporary naive art. The large room is filled with the Art Lending Gallery, from which you can immediately take home or borrow works. The works of the Naive artists familiar from the summer exhibitions - big and small, different techniques, sizes and styles - are hung in abundance. This requires concentration and calmness so that your own favorites catch your eye.

In the last small room, a collection of postcards from the history of Naive Artists in Iittala exhibition is on display.
